03:37 Oriental Tie Knot
First, the slimmer end has to be on your right side, the wide end has to on your left side. Position the right end so it's much longer than the short end. Typically, for me, the short end ends about a hand width above my pant's waistband. Now, cross the slim end over the wide end with the seam facing up. Pinch the intersection of the two sides with your left index finger and thumb. Fold the wider end over the intersection and your pinched fingers. Wrap it around and pull it snug. Now, take the wide end and insert it between the gap between your collar and the tie. Pull it through and then insert the tip of the wide end into the top layer of the knot. Hold the knot while you pull it all the way through gently. Before finally tightening the knot, make sure there's a little pinch of fabric on top of the long part of the tie so you get a dimple. Now, it's time to pull up the knot. Just pull on the shorter end with your right hand while holding the tie knot with your left hand.
05:31 Four in Hand Knot
First, drape the tie around your neck with the wide end on the left side and the thin end on your right side. Again, you want to adjust the length so the slim end is shorter. Typically. It ends about a hand width above my pant's waistband. Now, cross the wide end over the slim end with the seam facing towards your chest. Now, pinch the intersection, wrap the wider end once around, 360 degrees. This will form an opening over your left index finger. Now, you can pull the wide end from behind, pull all the way through and then put it through that hole you just created. Now, with your right index finger and thumb, hold the knot and with your left hand, pull the wide end through that little knot. Before finally tightening the knot, pinch the top part so you get that desired dimple then pull the knot tight and ultimately, hold it with your left hand and with your right hand pulling the slimmer end, wiggle it up so it fits neatly in the desired collar space. You don't want it to be more on one side or the other, you want it right in the middle so it's not overlapped and it looks neat.
07:43 Kelvin Knot
Drape the tie around your neck with the wider end on your left, the shorter end on your right. Again, adjust the length so the slimmer end is about a hand width above your pant's waistband. Of course, the slim end over the wide end and pinch it with your index finger. Fold the wider end over the intersection of your pinched fingers and go once around and pull it really tight. Now, once again, pinch that part with your thumb and index finger of your left hand. Now, wrap the wide end around once more, come through the back and pull it up gently. Now, you take the wider end and you stuff it through the hole you just created, pull it down. You do that while you have your left hand holding the knot and with your right hand, you pull on the wider end and pull it through. It's important that you pull that wide end through, just that one loop, not a double loop, otherwise, your knot might look odd because there will be two layers that can be seen. Now it's the same thing as before, make sure there's a little crease in the end so you get that desired dimple and then once the knot is tight, pull it up. Once the tie is fully tied, you ideally want the wide end and the slim end to be exactly the same length ending at about the middle of your belt buckle.

Thank you! 😊
I was in highschool and my step father got his dress shirts shipped to the house from custom shirt shop. 1983 circa.
In the box was a pamfelt on how to tie a tie. I used that guide & taught myself to tie a tie.
1992 cicra I was working as a Regional Manager for a Men's Suit & sport's wear store. And during Corp visit if the tie was not perfect, we would get trashed. So I learned the importance of a good knot. After the crash of many retailers in late 1990's , I found a new career & a suit was my uniform for many years. I have always taken pride in my tie & ties.
Enjoy your videos.
Could I please ask what was your later career, if you don't mind?
Wow, first time ever learning how to tie a tie knot. I couldn't believe how easy it was. Whenever it came time to wear a suit I always dreaded the tie part because I never knew how to do it. I just never took the time to actually learn. Just tried the Oriental knot and I had it done in seconds. I'm so proud of myself, lol. Thanks, Sven for making more of a man out of me, lol. The fear of tying ties is now finally gone thanks to you.
I agree strongly Raphael, the dimple is an excellent touch of nonchalant elegance. In my opinion, there is nothing more stylish than a quality tie, tied tightly with a dimple. There is nothing more boring than a cheap tie, tied loosely with no dimple, creating that goofy box-like shape.
Danke, diese Krawattenknoten kommen jetzt sehr gelegen.
Important to look proper in the quarantine indeed!
@@norraguldheden well it a good time to practise i guess
@@norraguldheden In Germany there was no quarantine in the sense of not being allowed to leave home. Many people even worked (partially) from the office).
Thank you so very much. This has helped me greatly
Excuse me Mr Schneider I was wondering about how much are those beautiful suits you guys always wear because I am loving the trend of you guys bringing suits and dapper stuff back in fashion.
I was just listening to "fly me to the moon" and here you are, showing us spring on the gentleman's gazette!
Also, more live streams, please!
I just love these!
Just one question, my white shirt is a bit white stripped, can I wear it with a business suit?
Ah Sinatra. A legend. I love all music up to about mid 60s. Everything else, in my opinion of course, is more technology than music.
And yes, about your shirt, if it is white with faint white stripes, I believe they call that self-striped, you can wear it with a bussines suit no problem.
@@krunoslavkovacec1842 thanks, a lot!

I thought we Marines (ret) we the most detailed tying ties. The give classes both at boot camp and OCS re tie tying. It was a inspection check during uniform inspections. To this day, and I’ve been retired since 1996, improperly tied ties is a pet peeve.
I'm not very fond of asymmetrical tie knots (I usually go for a half-Windsor), but indeed the Oriental knot is ideal for thick ties. It is also useful when you have a short tie - it lets you spare some centimeters/inches.
Just tried out the oriental for the first time and it gave me the best dimple I ever had. Definetly wearing it again. The half-Windsor isn't for me honestly. Maybe it could work with a narrower tie but I have yet to try that.
The half Windsor ***IS*** an asymmetrical tie knot
Wonderful video, helped my son who I have been trying to advise about ties.
I am quite stuck in my ways. With almost exclusively a full Windsor knot with a full spread collar. It helped me explain that something narrower would be more suitable for his build and face shape.
Thank you and stay safe.
I'm the same, my father taught me the Full Windsor when I was quite young (even as a child I wore a suit to church) and I've done ever since, paired with a Spread Collar. Now it's time for me to learn a narrower style.
Awesome Video, thanks!
I have a feeling this will be one of your most viewed videos of all time! I am pretty good with ties and even I found this to be helpful!
Thank u so much sir ❤️
I usually wear the four-in-hand or the half windsor. I also make sure to include a dimple
love it
The Four in hand knot is for me. With JºS. A Bank's 2 for 1 tie sale, and my penchant to splurge on a nice outfit for my daughters symphonic concert this weekend, this video was very timely. Thank you so much.
There's so much I've watched other videos and just could not get it and then for some reason I washed yours and I mastered all three styles first time trying and thank you so much you just for some reason made me learn a lot easier than any of the other videos thank you very much I really appreciate it I feel every adult should know how to tie a necktie
legends never die
I have not seen a tie with the ( Pine cone ) knot in a long time . Beautifully unique if done correctly .
Great collection you have there Mr Sven. Also stay safe!
Doubled Windsor for standard appearances (which in my case means everytime I leave my house) and for special occations I'm using the merowingian knot. Which is the most complex knot I've ever learned (even harder than the asymmetrical Ypsilon) but it looks awesome fits on ever collumn you just need a pretty long medium or thin tie. At job interviews or meetings with high grade b2b costumers it was always worth a positive comment - I love it
i can not find this "ypsilon" knot. do you mean eldritch?
In my opinion these knots (merowingian, eldritch, etc) are more like gaudy, party tricks to be used on the rarest of playful or creative occasions so as to avoid looking childish and unsophisticated but definitely a neat knot as far as knots go.
@@keilebgutierrez5260 well it is also a matter of taste. I lile varying my tie knots and the merowinger is part of my rotation :)
Thanks for this video. I am looking forward to wearing a tie again 😊
7:37 nice white shirt, I like how the shirt is patterned but the collar is a plain poplin, it reminds me of detachable collars
Have the same design with a white shirt myself. It works great with a suit, and is slightly better than a plain white shirt when I'm not wearing my jacket. Versatile parts like this is awesome when you're at the start of a new wardrobe.
I was about to give up trying to tie my now Knit-tie. Thanks so much for this!
Hello guys,
Love the channel !
I still can’t believe you haven’t covered lapel width and styles !
Tolles und hilfreiches Video! Vielen Dank 😊
This video reinforces the unfortunate fact that most of my ties are too short. As a tall man, I need longer tires but most of the ones I see in the department stores are just one size. Time to get some new ties!
Thank you. This helps
I was at an intervju and got the job and my now boss was thinking i was super fresh and dressed up and looking like a true gentleman.
I like to think that the Kelvin knot is named after British physicist Lord Kelvin (1824 -1907). He was one of the originators of the branch of mathematics known as knot theory.
I love this video of is very helpful I thought I would never tie a tie
Why am I even watching this? I wear Merovingian, Atlantic and Eldredge knots regularly XD
Great info! I was wondering, how to make a tie knot "stands out", without using a collar pin? Much appreciated.
I've been using a tie since I was old enough to walk and I always tied a four-in-hand but I guess have been doing it the mirrored way since I start off with the thick end on my right. I just assumed everyone did it that way until now. I am happy to start using the other two knots now in my everyday to better fit my collars. Up to now the only other knot I use was the windsor knot for more formal occasions but that is my least favorite as the general, (non stylish) public seems to use it all the time. So it was finally the time for me to "get learned".
I will try the Kelvin this week. Thks.
Perfection!!!
It really helped me thankyou 😊
Check out Prince Charles for the ultimate tie-knots and collar combos.
And for amazing and timeless style and elegance in general.
How about a video talking about buying vintage garments online seeing that most of us are stuck at home during the quarantine ?
Couldn’t agree more! The people have spoken!
Yes appsolutely. I would love to see that. He does have an online menswear buying guide in his web site but it s not about vintage.
Oriental Knot @ 3:53 - Four-In-Hand Knot @ 5:33 - Kelvin Knot @ 7:43 for those who don't like searching or waiting lol
Thank you very much 🙏🙏🙏🥰🙏
You should've mentioned the Old Bertie. Much more durable over the day while it's also asymmetrical and medium-sized. For thin ties it's also possible pull the long end twice around the knot.
GREAT ❤
Oriental, Pratt (Shelby), full Windsor are the knots I use. I also wear my ties with the tip at my belly button or a little above. The short tie era. An old picture of Laurel and Hardy. Also great if you drop you blazer and have a short sleeve shirt and simple gold bar tie clip.
good tutorial!
It would be interesting to see a video about different Bow Tie knots...
Thank you for all the informative and usefull content. The idea of eye wear popped into my head at random... is there a chance you gentlemen might shed light upon this subject? Again thanks much for your insight, I'm always looking forward to you new content.
That would be prime.
Have you heard of the high elves?
My father showed me how to tie a Half-Windsor but i never liked the lopsided look. In my opinion, ties look best with even knots.
The Kent knot, or as you say oriental knot, can be done front side not seem side. Simply twist the big blade of the tie upside down half way down then go underneath the small blade and across then put the tie through the loop. There you have it, front side Kent Knot.
Gentleman's Gazette, what do you think about inverness coat/spanish cape? I've seen a guy at Pitti Uomo and he was looking brilliant.
the prince Albert (double four in hand) is marginally harder than the regular 4iH and looks so much better :)
Alas, my first learned knot was the Double Windsor, and once you get used to it, anything else is obviously not yet done. So, I have to pick the right collared shirts, instead.
Maybe I'll teach myself an Ascot for when I wear a robe, someday :-)
All these are asymmetrical, you need to teach a half windsor, IMHO the best knot. A pratt knot is also good.
Will there be a video on the Frock Coat in near future? I think it was mentioned in another Video that there'll be one and it's quite hard to find Information on it.
Goof information..I see that you you enjoy wearing Paul Fredrick shirts...I too am a fan......
When tying your tie, does it make a difference which side the wide end starts on? I always notice you start with the wide end on the left, but I was curious if that’s just a matter of personal preference. Thanks for the content!
I always start with the wide end on the right and it works just fine for me. Everything is just reversed but I find that way more comfortable.
Ben Smith that’s what I figured, thanks for the response man
How do you ensure that the top of the knot covers the top of the collar band? I always pull my knot up as high as it will go but there’s always a little shirt showing above the knot. Frustrating.
Did you use barrel cuffs or French cuffs
I've always used just one type of knot...
Idk ties that I normally see on the gazette are at an angle.. I like a nice thick long not too thin symmetrical straight tie. Also anywhere where I see suits they never fit right.. they're either too tight with a lot of creases especially around the chest area or they're too loose and lumpy. I don't mean that the suits here that way I mean other places are like that.. I don't understand it because even the most famous people don't where suits that generally fit. Most are too tight lol
Please make us a tutorial about how to tie the tie like trump's tie
adam sohaib it’s a clip on
he uses double windsor (full windsor) I think
Li Co Ri Lo Ci Ro Li Co T
I would be inclined to believe he favours a reasonably tasteful half Windsor. I have also noticed he favours double dimples, which can be very elegant.
Well to make it like Trump’s tie you need to start with an extremely short narrow side so that you end up with the final result of a tie that falls way below the belt line.
130 for a tie is crazy brother🤣🤣
I really needed this, Tonight I'll have dinner with my wife at home 😂
i find it impossible to find a club collar shirt with collar pin holes
geez, these "how to" tie videos are showing me your inventory in action and making me want many ties I never gave a second thought to before in the retail site. Good for you, but dang...
Seriously? Your shirt is in need of pressing, steaming, ironing. One does not get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression.
Additionaly, some of your hanging ties appear tired and in need of steaming.
Just attention to detail yet I appreciate your necktie directions for that thank you.
In goodfellas the whole knot
is covered by the collar😂
Except for Robert De Niro he's got it open 😂
How
Where is the tie from 5.26 from?
You can find almost all the ties in our shop on the website. Se are no longer available though
Hey- thank you- I have just seen them- you have some gorgeous ties on there.
I can't take advice about these things off an American
Yet you desire and use the things they made, and probably don't realize how much the world follows American culture more than the other way around... Even music.
Admission: I don't like ties. There is something about walking around with a silk or cashmere slip knot around my neck that I just don't like. Can a man forego the tie and wear a shirt with a banded collar and still be stylish?
I guess I’m an oddball because I don’t care for a dimple in the tie, I think it looks sloppy, and I don’t care for asymmetric knots either for the same reason.
We should at least dress once for death. Why is my Windsor so bad, oh no I don't want to play chess. How about backgammon!
The way you are pulling the end of the tie through the loop to get it to the tie knot is hurting me... :( so much force applied.....
What is Trump's tie knot?
Full windsor knot(i think)
I'm 54. Maybe I've been tying a four in hand the wrong way since I was a child. I always start with the wide side of the tie on my right. In the video you do the opposite. Why? Does it matter? I hope not, because I have 40+ years of muscle memory doing it the other way.
No, it doesn’t matter. If it makes a nice knot, you have a nice knot. I think the convention is mainly based on what’s generally optimal for right hander.
4/3/2020
Oriental, Kelvin and Windsor knots are made by men who don’t know how to tie a knot. The only knot for any collar is the triangle which is symmetrical about a vertical line running down the length of the tie.
i cannot stand the on the nose voice... sry
Too fast how can someone learn how to tie a tie with this
You talk too much get into the point
Dawg an 11 minute video??????? Just show me how I don’t need an intro thesis and closing statement. Talkin about the history of ties hurry tf up😂
Collar clips/pins look awful imo
Oh no, its just a more classic look
