The Left Wing: Ireland's triumph, Italy's resurgence and the big Springbok challenge to come

  • Ireland are Six Nations champions once again as Luke Fitzgerald, Cian Tracey and Will Slattery look back on another memorable campaign.
The final victory over Scotland failed to hit the heights as Luke and Cian pick out areas where Ireland will look to improve ahead of two tests against South Africa this summer.
However, there were also plenty of positives as Andy Farrell's men secured back-to-back titles.
Peter O'Mahony's swansong, Italy's impressive showing and an awful few weeks for Wales are all on the agenda too.

Anyone thinks the South Africa tour will settle anything is delusional.
If springboks win “so they win at home at altitude”
If Ireland win “ yeah but the game didn’t really matter”

I would say if SA win it'll be
'ireland are overrated, back in your box, quarter final bottlers, southern hemisphere is superior'
      SA lose it'll be
'4 world cups to zero, you can't win a quarter, we weren't trying, it's part of rassies plan, only the WC matters and of course the ref & world rugby cheated us out of it conspiracy.'

@@colingibson5966 that will obviously be the South African view. The other will be it’s been a decade since the springboks beat Ireland outside of SA(including at the World Cup) and one of the games was played at altitude.
Also, SA don’t have a monopoly on claiming to be rebuilding for the future

@@Camcolito no French must worst and ask England players and tV personalities the rabid racist issues from their fans...Saffa are a bit stupidly blind but never abusive like Irish and English fans...so you are talking shite!

Based on social media the South Africans are absolutely obsessed with Ireland and by the upcoming tests. Both tests sold out within hours of going live. Their pundits are already predicting a white wash. I have decided not to engage with their podcasts or online videos as it's absolutely pointless trying to have a rational discussion without it getting abuse. I see the series as a massive free shot though. We don't stand to lose anything of substance really. We won't lose ranking points even if we lose both tests. Most neutrals would expect SA to win at home, so I don't think we lose much lustre. It's purely about bragging rights Regardless of whether we win or lose though the South Africans will make excuses, issue threats to officials if things don't go their way and accuse us of cheating. We should just go for it. They have always had a score to settle every time they've played us and it will be the same in the summer

How would we do without our imports? Like Aki, JGP, Lowe and Mack. Lowe I’d say can be replaced and I’d much rather Mack over Lowe. I think we dealt well without Mack. JGP is key, i honestly don’t know who could replace him.

"Murray's tactical nauce" didn't win the England match or world cup quarter final. He played in both so not sure how it's supposed to make us better when it's already there.

Murray has been disappointing this 6N. His play vs England was truly below par by a long way.

Ireland are increasingly being carried through games by Aki, Lowe and Gibson-Park. All Kiwi imports and all in their 30s now. Hopefully the management have a succession plan in place, but it's unlikely that any home-grown replacements will come close to their level in terms of skill or physicality.

There are 15 players on the field, not 3. Aki and JGP often say at interview “it’s the lads around me that make me look good”. Yes they are great players without question but they could not do what they do on their own.

Yes, winning the 6 nations is a big deal, but winning it on this occasion felt like an anticlimax. I don't want to be critical of the achievement, but Ireland didn't play to their best in the last three matches. I think we have very high standards expected of Ireland now.
Having said that, i remember the 90s when we used to wish we could beat Wales in order to avoid the wooden spoon. So i don't want to lack appreciation for how far Ireland have come

If South Africa win the first game, the reroute for next game. South Africa has interest believe that nothing else matters other than RWC. I thinks Ireland will win one and South Africa will win one.

They basically had the Championship won in the third game and lost an away fixture by one point against a team that pulled out it's best performance in 5 years and they are done really?
