My parents actually did something very similar to this! Though instead of a dog, they adopted a little guinea pig, the runt of the litter who was very tiny and unlikely to survive. They thought it would be a good way for me and my sister to learn about death. But my beautiful, little man showed them and lived for 12 glorious years! Unfortunately, my dad is severely allergic to animals so, once it was obvious that our piglet had beaten the odds, we had to consider rehoming him (the guinea pig that is, not my dad). But by then it was too late; he had already won our hearts. Even Dad was smitten and would give him hugs despite sometimes taking up to three days in bed for him to recover (my dad that is, not the guinea pig). While my parents would joke about 'that bloody guinea pig still hanging on' and would always, WITHOUT FAIL respond to "What's for dinner?" with "Roast Guinea Pig!", they'd be the first to agree that bringing our little piglet home was the best mistake my parents ever made.

I think another large problem in the world is the homeless, starving human population. We could combine he abandoned pet problem and the starving human population to reconcile both dilemmas -simply feed one group to the other (the choice of which you feed to whom is yours).
