The video I put together from The Unbelievers - Extended Interviews, contains only the Ricky Gervais clips. His interview was so full of wit, and logical, rational, reasoned arguments, that I had to make this video and share it with the world.
I challenge people who have any degree of faith, to come up with a rational, reasoned argument, that can challenge any of the points made in this interview.
Thank you to Ricky Gervais and everyone involved in making The Unbelievers film at Black Chalk Productions. I hope you don't mind me making and sharing this!
His comment about not teaching children about religion until 20 is a great idea.
Yep, that would be nice
It is a totally improbable idea. It might be funny, but it is impossible to grow up in our country and avoid mention of God, even if your parents go out of their way to insulate their children from religion, which mine did. Think of the Xmas songs, or any songs. I had friends who believed. Well, it is actually ridiculous to even discuss the idea. So it was a joke. A throw away idea.
@@stephenpitell6087 what he meant was teaching it, in my country you can have 2 of 45 minutes classes in every week of religion if you want, and im pretty sure that in some schools and countries you actually must go to them, as an atheist i think what he says is one of the best ideas out there, and yes even teaching or indoctrinating atheism shouldnt be done too
We were risen in a atheist society (communist Romania) and I miss nothing about this rigmarole, I raised my children the same, and they are smart, productive members of society too.
@stephenpitell6087 everyone already understood the improbability, I think you can rest assured.
He is one of the most intelligent men alive but he's brilliant at common sense too. He keeps it real ❤️
And your bright as a lightbulb too.moron
He is clueless about God. He can make people laugh, for sure, but he is uneducated and under developed spiritually.
No, he is not, you are just happy that he is trying to reinforce your absurd beliefs with his stupid arguments. That's right ABSURD BELIEF
I'm Christian and I don't believe in God or Christianity. My name is Christian, is what I should have said. I'm not Christian, i'm Christian.

_I'm Christian and I don't believe in God or Christianity. My name is Christian, is what I should have said. I'm not Christian, i'm Christian._
Then you should have taken your parents to court for some retribution because of their ignorance. And, while you're at it, *why haven't you changed your name?* It's available. I changed my name because I didn't want to be named after my father -- [this is true] -- at the time, it cost me only about $2.50 (approx.).

This is why I love Ricky Gervais. Both uproariously funny and incredibly intelligent.
I was raised catholic went to catholic schools and I'm an atheist Thank you Catholics for opening my eyes to all the BS.
That 's because the Roman Catholic Church is a pagan , idolatrous, sun-worshiping death cult with a veneer of Christianity.

Something Ricky has done brilliantly, is in a nutshell said, everyone's entitled to believe what they want to believe, but it should only affect you personally it shouldn't be enforced on another human being and everyone is entitled to their own sense of beliefs.
Religion is becoming more and more weird by the day.
+praaht18 I disagree, since science should be explaining the superstitions away.
+djdrj It is Explaining the superstitions away. Eg Demons posessing people. We now know there are no demons possessing people, we know its mental disorders , many of which can be controlled with modern medicine.
I know that it does. I also know that some people still have them even though there is tons of evidence that would say otherwise. That's why I said "should" instead of "is".
+djdrj But there are people that don't belive in reality xD
How about this logical solution for everyone regarding the ultimate truth.
If you, every night 'request' 'Oh creator of the universe, if there is one, guide me to the right path'
Why? well there would be no arguments and people can live the life as they are guided or not (if there is no god).
Why is it logical solution? Well when you die (which every one does) if there is no god you have nothing to worry about, if there is a god and you where following gods way fine, and if there is a god but god says no no you did not follow my way, well you will have a very strong argument, you have asked god every night for guidance and if he did not guide you then it is not your fault and all religions portray god as all merciful. Try it out and see what happens there nothing to lose, just a few seconds every night.

The irony of the "if someone proved god to you would you believe" question is this. If the God proven to exist was the Muslim God, atheists would believe in the evidence before Christians would and vice versa.
So true.
+GisHur
The biggest irony of this question is, that if there would be any evidence, no one had to BELIEVE.

Ricky is spot on. Its what is in my head about religion as well, and great ways to look at it.
There should be no word such as atheism. I am sick of people who look down on atheists where religious types should look at them selves for living in a fantasy land of make believe. They say God fearing, I say death fearing.
You defined part of your religion that includes, 'There should be no....'
@@candeffect Oh, brother!! Atheism is not a religion. Do you have an intelligent point to make?
@@user-vm4ej4uv1q Atheism is the belief that there is no God, and can therefore be defined as a religion based on the faith that there is no God.
"You're always born in to the Right God"..... Coincidence???
A false assertion based on philosophical reasoning. For example, if you were raised in the religion of Atheism, there is nothing standing in your way of adopting a different faith. Same goes for all religions.
@@kenkuehne6027 Calling atheism a religion seems an odd choice, no?
Dashing Dave, There is no fallacy. You either have faith in your ideology or you don't. If you believe in the religion of Atheism, then you're a faithful Atheist. If you have no faith in Atheism, then whatever ideology you think you might have is nothing more than vanity and emptiness.
@@kenkuehne6027 So not collecting stamps makes me who? Atheism - religion without god, churches, gatherings, belief in supernatural and afterlife. Makes perfect sense.
Halt Hammerzeit, Another bad metaphor. You can't prove that stamps don't exist. In fact, the evidence for the existence of stamps is overwhelming. But far be it from me to prove it to you if you insist on remaining ignorant of stamps. Atheism is the assertion that 'there is no God.' To believe this assertion, you must of necessity exercise 'faith' that the assertion is true, because 'it cannot be proven'. The assertion by Atheists, that Atheism is the absence of belief or faith, is an erroneous absurdity. There is no evidence that Atheism is anything other than a 'belief system', albeit the belief that there is no God. Atheist love to play this game with semantics to prove that Atheism is not a religion, but in order to do this, they first have to twist the meaning of words and ideas into pretzels in order to accomplish it.
It's funny he mentions Santa Clause, because when I was 7 or so, I suspected there was something funny about this Santa stuff, and pestered my Dad until he admitted it was fake. Immediately, a light went off in my head. I realised that bullshit was on the loose, and you had to question everything. I doubt it was more than a day or so later that I concluded there was no difference between God and santa. They made equal sense.

I grew up in a family where nobody went to church but Christianity was taught to me by osmosis. Every school assembly started and ended with prayers and hymns and then there's Christmas, Easter and all the rest of it. I became an atheist as a teenager and have spent the rest of my life trying to work out what is indoctrinated belief within our society and what I can truly believe. It certainly makes life interesting.
A highly intelligent and intuitive man!
If you’re a ‘believer’, the most you can ever say is ‘I have a faith there is a god’! The Definition of faith..... belief without evidence.
Love you Ricky !!

I'm Catholic and I like watching & reading the Athiest perspective to challenge my belief, and for a long time I would conclude that, I can't quite comprehend/accept that this infinite universe was random, but Ricky's point about the coins and no one arrangement being more significant than another gave me something new to consider.
Hi Jose. The Bible. Have you read it ?
There is no evidence that the universe is random, in fact there is evidence that the universe is by design.
People seem to forget that it is by Faith. Whether Faith in a Supreme Being or no Faith in a Supreme Being. It's one's duty in Life to Choose and place Faith wisely

+brn2wld Does being a Christian stop you from doing the horrible things you mention? Does that mean if you weren't a Christian, you would do those horrible things? Why can't I mention you or reply directly to your comment? :-) There are always consequences when people do horrible things - why should we have to wait to be judged by your imaginary deity? Good people who lack a belief in any of the gods that humans have made up, don't do horrible things, probably because of the empathy that we feel with other people - we simply don't want to hurt other people. This is far more virtuous than not doing horrible things because we're scared of what an imaginary creator will do to us after we die.
What assumptions do you assume Ricky makes about Christians?
Nobody is shoving anything down anyone's throat (haha, now now, don't be rude) - he is answering questions in an interview he was asked to do for a documentary. Take care
Hi Matti, for me it seems when Ricky speaks on religon it only seems to be on christainity and islam, I wondered what your thoughts were on my religion Sikhi, would of been interesting to hear Rickys thoughts aswell
Hi Gurmeet, My initial thoughts would be that Sikhs are just like me but have a set of beliefs that don't encroach upon the lives of other people. In that sense, and judging from anyone I know who knows any Sikhs, Sikhs are great! :-)
My knowledge (and probably most peoples' knowledge) of Sikhism is limited. However, the fact that Sikhism isn't being talked about in this video, or in the news, is because Sikhs aren't killing people in the name of their religion, for example :-) Again, that means Sikhs are fine with me!
I wouldn't agree with a Sikh if they told me that their god is real and the one true god, for the same reason I wouldn't believe in any of the other thousands of gods that humans have (in my opinion) made up - because there's no evidence for the existence of that god or any other god.
The way a Sikh practices their religion is, in my opinion (and probably Ricky's), far more positive than proponents of the other religions you mention.
Take care and thanks for your comment
Gurmeet singh they would probably be the same. he mentions the faithful
Hi Matti, apologies for the late reply, thanas for replying to my question, it was an interesting answer, I look foward to seeing more if your videos
I've seen the "assumptions" argument a few times now. People don't like their religion being defined, they like when it can be and mean anything interchangeably. The problem with that is no one can analyse something without having it defined first.
"There is a god!" "What?" "There is a god!"
All of his points are perfect.
This is AWESOME ! Well said Ricky.
Gervais is great, standing up against religion is needed badly.
Its funny how we seem to be hard wired to want to belong to a group. Whether it be a flag or a religion or even a football team. Atheists, and I'm one, are the most reluctant members of their own group.
+Mick G Not much of a group though.. Your hardly going to connect with people over non-belief in a thing because that's not actually having anything in common.
+Mick G Ironic that the need to be a part of a community is very Darwinian :')

I don't agree, atheists are now getting connected through the chapel of the internet.
Cant deny that atheism has become a movement.. I just dont know why!
I feel nothing in common with someone who agrees that the world is round, or denys ghosts, etc..
+daft wod That's because what tends to unite Atheists is secularism, humanism and sometimes anti-theism. Atheism by itself has nothing to unite people.

I personally have religious beliefs but I couldn’t agree more with Ricky. I take moral lessons and personal comfort in times of trouble through my faith in God however I also can separate my spiritual beliefs from my beliefs in science. People shouldn’t ram their religious beliefs down other people’s throats and if they choose to have beliefs, such as myself, then practice them quietly and not use them to push an agenda of bigotry or prejudice towards others.
I believe everyone should constantly question their beliefs, like science, it is always aski

i wonder what the other Mark Twain quote was that the interviewer was going to mention...
I love it when religious people use the argument "The human body is so complex, it must of had an intelligent creator."... The human body is far from perfect. Everytime you eat or drink, you actually run the risk of choking to death. That is not intelligent design. Everyday your DNA destroys damaged cells, sometimes leading to cancer. Not intelligent design. Human genitals, if anything happens to them, you can't reproduce, not intelligent design. I could go on and on, the point is that none of this signals an intelligent creator. If you were to create a species, you wouldn't make it so that soo many different things can go wrong.

The Bible says in Jeremiah 29:13 "and ye shall seek me and find me, WHEN ye shall SEARCH me with all your HEART." Youre not really searching with all your heart when youre focused on whats on tv in the back of your mind or how boring this is. As you search for it, in your mind youre not thinking how boring this is or what on tv and you will not stop searching until it is found. that is searching wholeheartly. you say you have been waiting for God to open your eyes but perhaps he is waiting on you to put your part in it and truly search for him wholeheartedly.
The moment he opens our eyes is the moment we understand that nothing in this world fulfills us. the moment we remove all our idols and desire something better for us than what the world offers which could be fame, money, glory or anything temporary really. I recommend you brother that if you are actually curious, come to know who Christ really is as a person and God in the new testament of the bible and put it on trial. And dont make a conclusion based on the lenses or another person who doesn't know the bible. Make your own opinion about who Christ Lord is.
I am very confident that the Lord will come in your life and it may not be today or next week but i am confident it will happen. and i am confident you will feel his love and see the plans he has for you. you may not have faith right now but i surely do for you man. God Bless you and your family alright.

You don't catch on to sarcasm too well, do you?
I don't believe in any god.
Don't waste your time.
Bob in the West its always worth the effort to spread the good news😌
Does anybody else see the number 6 (VI) in roman numerals between his eyebrows?
Now i cannot unsee it...!!!!
For the love of God all of you people!!! If you argue any of what this clip informed you with you just don't get it. Go believe in any god you damn please!!
I'm starting to really believe that people with a great sense of humor, wit and those who trully understand comedy are the ones who really get this. It' can't be a coinsidence ~ Maybe it's because those who know comedy well, feel also the tragedy of it all as well. While the opposite version is not that often. Comedians are always better in drama than the other way round. In any case, go Ricky ;) ~
I've been a Christian all my life and I agree with everything he said.
Then you weren't a Christian to begin with.
i believe in dog... (they've given me far more companionship and love over the years... and, much like god, they don't talk back either)
I have heard that there are flat earth believers in the navy. How's that work?
Turning a blind eye to evidence and post hoc rationalization.
As an agnostic, I often ridicule atheists. But Damn, Ricky has made the best case for atheism that I've heard so far.
why the fuck would an agnostic ridicule atheists.. you're just an atheist who can't either commit or make up his fucking mind...
Zed I ridicule, because there is a logic fallacy, in general, that something doesn't exist. If somebody asks, what if there is an entity or entities that created the structures of science, then my honesty question is "I don't know". Saying "I don't know" or not making your mind about some things is not a sign of weakness. It's actually a sign of humidity and open mindedness. You know what is a sign of weakness? Certainty. What I do know, based on observation and logic, that the god created by humans is not real and laughable.
You're confused. You're actually an atheist. Most atheists say "i don't believe in god". GNOSTIC atheists say "there is no god" but they on;y comprise a small amount of atheists because atheists are smart enough not to make that logical fallacy.
Gabriel Yesus, The problem here is not what conclusion or level of certainty is correct. The problem here is agreeing on the definition of "Atheist" and "agnostic". My definitions certainly are not the same are yours, specifically, your definition that agnostics think that "there is no God". Also, in my view, neither Agnostics nor atheist BELIEVE in God, you seem to make such distinction. I actually go by the Webster dictionary definition. Agnostic: holds the view that an ultimate reality (such as God) is unknown and probably unknown.... Atheist: does not believe in the existence of a God or any gods. So based on that definition, I subscribe to agnostic, because atheism is problematic. It's like an ant in the middle of the Sahara is attempting to know or assert whether a creature such as a polar bear or a six-legged, green platypus exists. It's impossible to know, and more importantly, irrelevant to the existence and actions of that ant. Now, if you ask me if I believe that THE SPECIFIC god that religious humans created exists, that's a completely different conversation and scope.
theres a difference betweern agnostic and gnostic atheists.
Agnostic atheist- I dont believe that there is a god.
Gnostic atheist- I know there's no god.
hahahaha "now ask me if you're wearing a red jumper that created the universe"
Some of the things you said, I've heard them before somewhere else like "what do you think it feels like to be dead"? "Well, do you remember before you were born? That's how it feels" That's in a movie. Can't remember which one.
It made no sense before and makes no sense now ,oh it was in a movie now I know there's no God.
@Divex Oh thanks now that you told me the answer to what life is all about now I can live my life the way I want.
@Divex Well I knew a few atheists who cried out on their deathbed including my brother I just dont want to be like that.
@Divex That's old Testament, Where did you read in scripture That JESUS CHRIST condemned mankind,ah love thy neighbor, dont sound to threatening to me.
And I never mentioned my GOD.
