  • The U.S. Army finally unplugged the servers for its video game, 'America's Army.' It put in millions of dollars for a game that you could grab for free. But the military wasn't trying to make money: It was trying to get people to enlist.

    33 million dollars… that’s about the cost of a single trident II missile. I think they can afford it.

    Sad to hear this game is now gone. I was part of a pretty high-ranking clan in the first 5-10 years after this game came out so it was a major part of my life for a good number of years. I have very fond memories of it and of the camaraderie it brought. I was the only foreigner (European) in that clan, the rest were all Americans, so I used to get up in the middle of the night to practice with them and to play competition. I was also the youngest by far, because I lied about my age when I joined, though in hindsight I'm sure they knew. Good times. I wonder how those guys are doing now, I hope they're doing great

      @Mr. Prick Yeah man, it was exactly the same for me. Going through puberty I had, like so many people, a rough time mentally. Or at least what seemed back then to be a rough time. Those guys spent their precious time to talk to me and give me advice. I'll never forget that they did that for a stranger on the other side of the world and I do my best to do the same for other people if they need to have someone lend them an ear. Their compassion and friendship helped shape me into who I am today. Most of them were in their 30's and 40's, some in their 50's, it really made an impression on me that fully grown men would accept me, treat me as an equal and try to support me. This is going to sound a bit...sad probably but I'm not sure whether I would still be alive today if it wasn't for them, let alone doing as great as I am now. They provided me with the one thing I needed back then, someone that actually listened to me. Ah, I miss them, hope they're all doing amazing. Too bad I don't have any contact info for them anymore or I would reach out

    I know plenty of guys around the Halo scene that joined a military branch because of the already military members in my groups. I don’t think it was intentional recruiting from those guys, but it still worked out. That being said most of the guys I know that have joined the military have gone to the Marines, not the Army. Forcecon 2022 was certainly a very interesting and likely successful attempt at recruiting though. Having esports teams from different military branches compete in a high production event that is federally funded certainly grabbed a lot of attention.

    I remember years ago when the gov was all over the news with the whole” violent video games makes kids killers” kick. At the same time, there was a game series called socom navy seals. A game where you play as a squad of navy seals and do all sorts of military missions, like killing. On the last couple of pages in the booklet, that came with the game, that stated, basically, if you like their game and are good at it, then why not try the US military! It was literally a military recruitment ad you could fill in and mail off, all postage paid, to find out how you could be of service to your country. Kinda playing both sides of the fence there if you ask me. But of course that is how our gov does.

    I would say that having twitch streaming soldiers is an ethicly better advertisement than for example recruiters in a mall, coming to schools or directs ads in the tv. All these have an element of active approach by the military and passive receptance by the viewer. Twitch streams emancipate the viewer by actually giving them free choice to watch content made to advertise the army. The viewer has to actively approaches the military which is more agency than they had with other media.

      Well yeah but this wasn't an option before. In a system where military service isn't a must unlike other countries, they need some type of recruitment tool besides word of mouth and "Family Tradition." Before broadband, this WAS their only option. There is a reason why Bush sent the National Guard to Afghanistan in the early 2000's when the NG is supposed to be a domestic arm of the military, protecting America and staying in its borders.
      I'm not agreeing with the military, I'm just stating what took place and the record low numbers of military personal. After 9/11, people signed up but they weren't ready yet so there was a pretty big shortage of people to throw at the Middle East.

    I was the clan leader of an International clan of around 100 members, we had about 4 servers running and had a massive reputation as a clan most teams wanted to compete with. Even though the game was free the cost of the servers was something we had to consider to run a monthly subscription - which wasn't an issue. I loved the camaraderie of the clan members and the amazing skills of some players. Plus the whole community was completely engrossed in this game for years until the servers started to disappear and newer games came out.
    It was an amazing era and I thank all my clan members and the community for instilling a team spirit and loyalty that I have used throughout my work career.

    • @SixSnax
      @SixSnax 2 года назад +10

      It wasn't discussed. They're willing to hire esports teams, fund their extravagant lives, travel them around the world and host events. Theyre still paying lots.
      The only person that discussed the price was this reporter.
      The reason the twitch eSports team died is noted here...
      *"Twitch users in the chat began 'trolling' the US Army streamers by asking about the military's “war crimes”. In the Navy chat, the name “Eddie Gallagher” became a banned term. Gallagher is a former Navy SEAL who was found guilty of inappropriately posing for a photograph with an enemy corpse in the war zone."* Aug 16, 2020
      The problem was that the entire worlds children and young adults were on twitch, many of whom could easily derail the army guys chats, and they did. Most American kids don't know 99.999% of the war crimes America comits regularly. So if anything the twitch thing was hurting them more than it was helping them by giving the rest of the worlds children access to a military gaming chat room basically.... Not good.

    I played this game in 2005/2006. It was extremely difficult online, the weapons had high recoil, you would be killed in 2 shots, and it was extremely difficult to see enemies. When you actually took down an enemy, it felt extremely satisfying. But by the time call of duty 2008 came out this game was already archaic.

      Why are kids watching games that have high age restrictions? The army is advertising to people about 16 years old, who can make their own decisions and come up with their own thoughts, not 10 year olds. The parents complaining likey complained because their kids are young.

      @@ginger0208 Everyone the military is targeting the hardest for recruitment is either a child or barely older than a child, with poor reasoning skills and a weak understanding of the long term consequences of their decisions. This includes people from their teens through their early 20s. The military wants those people to feel mature and like they can make their own decisions, btw, so they can sign their life away in exchange for a bonus, a lifetime of mental illness, increased risk of suicide, and the heavy conscience gained from complicity in imperial ventures.

    I remember playing this for the first time decades ago and I got immediately bored with the qualification process just to make it to SF. Meanwhile I am already part of a secret special forces unit in Ghost Recon, no qualification courses necessary.

    America's Army was the only thing I played for a decade. So much fun and the purpose of the game was such an inspiration. With all the scams online I don't see why US Army couldn't advertise real stuff on the streaming platforms. Just think about how many kids daily get scammed into White Delux that ruin teeth or other scams.

      “The purpose of the game was an inspiration” ????? The purpose was to recruit children to one day die in pointless wars.

    • @daniels-mo9ol
      @daniels-mo9ol 2 года назад

      @@LJ-fq6uw You clearly have no idea of what the majority of the player base actually used it for. It was a great tactical and strategic game when played on smaller scales, teamwork and communication is key and you have to rely on each other to win the game.
      Anyway, you see pointless recruitment and brainwashing daily in religion, social media and schools. I'm certainly not for war, but I certainly am not for being defenseless to ideologies that slaughter the weak, force women to cover themselves completely just to barely get away with not being stoned, prevent democracy, kill children of disability, won't allow children and women education. Because believe me, without a military that shows power - you, Lisa, who probably is a woman, will lose all rights that you deserve. Without recruitment there will be no protection.
