@@jlo13800: A _snowmobile engine,_ anyway.... But what I was saying to Donald is that the term is "2-stroke," not "2-cycle," which should be obvious to anyone who knows what an engine cycle is and does.
He is very passionate about the Detroit Two Stroke Engines. So am I. We had an Open Top American LaFrance Fire Apparatus that was an Engine Company she was really sweet. I mean Sweet.
the year was 1964 I was 4yrs old when I first heard that distinctive sound of a Detroit diesel on a greyhound from new Orleans to los Angeles. that's when I fell in love.
Wow, I am really fascinated by those big two strokes! Having combustion at every stroke instead of every other makes them really sound fantastic ! We only have the GM EMD 2-strokes in our locomotives here in Denmark. I have to go to Montreal and have a look at those machines :)
Back in 82 I worked my weekends off driving taxi for the ole Yellow Cab and the garage in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the side road ended at a very steep stop sign on 10 percent grade. Cambridge Fire had gone to a southern community to look at a hook and ladder old school with a tiller man on the back, and were only interested in the ladder trailer until they got there and discovered it was hooked to a very nice open air cockpit American LaFrance tractor with a 6-71 and a 10 speed non synchronized straight cut gears only transmission in excellent condition. They had to hire a driver to get it to Cambridge as no one could drive the ten speed 6-71 power plant and then started driver training when they got it back to Cambridge a week later . I was shooting the bull with the night tow driver when it went bye on green street and turned onto the side street which ended on Massachusetts avenue. Where he stopped for the stop sign where the night driver and I heard the driver of the ladder truck try to enter Massachusetts avenue and stall the engine over 30 times. I then walked up the hill where they were attempting to turn left. I was 6' 1" 285 pounds with a 30 inch waist, a long beard down to my belt with a ponytail to my butt and walking up to the drivers side asked I know your trying to do driver training but considering your blocking one lane would you like me to show you how to drive a Detroit? The driver trainee was more than willing to relinquish the seat and the Captain ( if I remember right) was willing so I climbed up into the drivers seat and then stated its not difficult if you use the engines power to your advantage tranny in first gear eased the clutch out until the engine idling picked up a load at idle without touching the throttle and explaining each move as I went released the spring applied air brake the ladder didn't move until after releasing the parking brake I eased the clutch out a fraction more and the truck moved forward at which point I added power until I was quickly flat to the floor then as the engine hit the governor at 2300 rpm just lifted the throttle pedal a little bit and selected the next gear2-3-4-5 flip to high range and shifted into 6th and no other place to pull over very busy street three blocks down and signaled a left turn downshifting to 2nd gear without using the brakes to make a block long u-turn and stopped at the top of the street we had entered from. Set the 4 way flashers tranny in neutral and set the parking brake where the Captain shocked the living crap out of me and said to me this isn't a joke. Would you like a job driving this ladder? I was 31 and really felt bad when I said no I already have a job. What kind he asked? I'm a locomotive engineer for Conrail I replied. The look on his face told me he knew he couldn't get me away from that job. They had been trying to train a driver for the truck for three weeks with no luck. Instead I offered to train his drivers if he wanted which he immediately accepted. They were sending their people to a tractor trailer school that was trying to teach them to double clutch each gear shift. I was taught the old way the clutch is for first and reverse only every other shift is done by matching gears not using the clutch. When I pulled out of that side street so easily to me when I looked in the center rear view mirror they were stunned by how easily and quickly went through the gears. The 6-71 with a 10 speed was a great engine around the city but sucked on the highway, not enough power. I almost took Cambridge Fire up on their job offer but decided to stay with the railroad. Always wondered if I made the right choice.
the sound of nostalgia, and childhood anyways, I also miss regular V8 cars, Anyhow, How long do they keep this stuff running? from what I see buses never retire till they die. Last time I was at Disney in 2008 I'm sure they had some Detroit RTS buses running still.
Over here, they scrapped all Classic's as of January 2016, in favour of the Nova LFS. But, we have some older LFS's here, 3 1998's, and 6 2001's. Also, my profile picture shows Metrobus Transit 8720, one of the 1987 MCI TC40102N's that were replaced in 2012.
Years ago, I very rarely saw or heard any 2-stroke Detroit Diesel engines anywhere in Newfoundland...nowadays, they seem to be extinct! 4-stroke Diesel engines are more commonplace nowadays in Newfoundland!
Question about STO #9501. Is the unit on the roof only used for heating? Or does it have AC as well? I noticed the tip-in windows and that usually means that the bus is equipped with AC (STM is the exception, naturally).
Any CLassic that has those roof units have AC. Those stupid windows I always hated when we had them in the STCUM CLassics. Didnt occur to me when watching this at home, that they were still made in '95, likely a standard and thus cheaper feature..
That firetruck that you "proclaimed" to be 6V71 powered at the 4:35 mark, is NOT a 6V71.... it is an 8V92, and the one immediately after that one, is 6V92 powered as is all the rest of them in the video (92's... Not 71's). Also, just so you know.... Detroit Diesel is STILL producing NEW 6V53's, 8V71's and 92's.... for government and military contracts in the US and abroad, as well as an ongoing refinement program for all three series.... and Detroit is remaining committed to them, Indefinitely into the future, along with a full Re-manufacturing program to service the approximately 1 million+ that are known to be still in service, world wide.... and more being "resurrected" from the "dead" on a monthly basis, globally and especially in the US.
Elton, my friend, when I hear a 2-stroke, it always takes me back to my early childhood when the 2-stroke diesel was still a thing but was slowly being phased out in favor of today’s scrap 4-stroke diesels.
There's a couple of older Spartan Chargers living in my city. One is a '91 model doing Airport crash tender duties, and the other is a '97 model ladder truck (callsign AKL 206) that sees relief service when the other ladder units are off being serviced or repaired, looks much the same as that Spartan 3rd in line at 8:15. The 97 model has some sort of 2 stroke Detroit powering it. Sounds wicked
Detroit kept some of their old city busses 78 and later models for over 15 years but swapped the Detroit Diesels to either Cummins or Caterpillar was not the same
Also, Elton, if you didn’t know this about the enclosed top mount pump panel, the enclosed top mount pump panel has significance when it comes to fighting fires in bad weather. The enclosed top mount pump panel was meant to give the chauffeur/engineer some protection from the bad weather while he provided just the right amount of water to the nozzleman.
I'm glad that someone agree with me the nova low floor buses are junk and I hate every low floor buses from the minute they were built between 1989& beyond those low floor buses are a real joke to me and we had sea grave fire trucks with the same motor as the buses 6v 92 Detroit diesel-power now we have the American LaFrance and peirce fire trucks with the 50 series Detroit diesels Cummins or a caterpillar diesel engines they are good for the environment but boring and they turn me off
That is true, such a crock of shit. I think the real reason is they quit making them is because they wanted us to have engines that break down. Just like a lot of the cars nowadays, can't really work on them yourself unless you got all that computer shit to diagnose therm Godamn the 21st century!
Ah yes. The wonderful sweet sounds of a Detroit 2 stroke. Thanks for bringing them to life in video.
Detroits were so loud they didn't need a siren on it.

Awesome. I love it when I find people with mutual appreciation.

Wow, I didn't know they still used the ol' GM Classic buses around Montreal! How cool is that?
Those were built right outside, Montreal.
Cascerne 10 had their Autopompe Freightliner with a Detroit motor, one of the reasons I loved riding there.
Sounds like someone loves his Detroit Diesels :-)
I love those sweet sounding detroits. Thanks for sharing:)
