  • FDNY Hook & Ladder 20 is a 2013 Seagrave Attacker HD 100' Tractor Drawn Aerial stationed in Manhattan. Ladder 20 is also known as a Tiller which helps them maneuver into tight and narrow streets that a Rear mount Ladder may not be able to, by keeping the 100' aerial. Just like every other Ladder company in the FDNY, Ladder 20 is staffed with a Officer and 4-5 Firefighters. (Chauffeur, Roof, Irons and OV which would be the Tillermen) All Ladder companies strictly do truck duties. They respond to all sorts of calls from Elevators to Subway Emergencies and from MVAs to Fires. Each FDNY Ladder Company has extrication Equipment, Air Bags, Forcible Entry Tools, Hydra Ram, Pike Poles, Hooks, Ground Ladders, Torch, EMS Equipment, Stokes, FAST Pak, Pak Tracker, Saws, Drills, Hand Tools.
    The First Arriving Ladder is to always try to be Infront of the building when possible and operates on the fire floor, the chauffeur of the ladder most of the time stays at the pedestal. The 2nd Ladder will arrive and be behind the 1st due ladder ad less a better positioning point is found. The 2nd Ladder company will operate on the floors above the fire checking for extension, searching for victims checking stairs and hallways and then venting. The 3rd arriving ladder is the FAST Truck and is suppose to park outside of the fire area with exceptions. The FAST Truck is "Firefighting Assist and Search Team" They are ready at the command post if a firefighter may be in distress or missing they are activated. They provide immediate assistance to any firefighters in danger and rescue them if missing, lost or trapped, a Rescue Company and Squad Company will also assist in this.
    Tillers just like Straight Sticks re equipped with hose for a ladder pipe operation. FDNY does not have pre pipped ladders, the reason for that is it will raise the height of all trucks. Another reason is it’s much safer to use a Tower Ladder. It is very rare to see a ladder pipe operation in the FDNY. Ladder 20 did use one in a fire in Chinatown.
    There is 13 Tillers in the FDNY throughout the City (A few will be added in the coming years changing from straight sticks to Tillers)
    Manhattan
    L5 L6 L20 L34 L40
    Brooklyn
    L101 L104 L106 L118 L147 L175
    Bronx
    L39
    Queens
    L143

    Ladder 20 responds to around 1,700 calls a year

    And they're fun to operate... especially the Tillerman position. Early in the Tractor Drawn -Tiller Drive apparatus development, the Tillerman were chosen from non-licensed drivers because motor vehicle operators tended to turn with the tractor instead of opposite.

    Question, since Tillers are a trailer I assume hooked to a 5th wheel are there spares in case of mechanical issues? and are all the Tillers interchangeable with one another? I would assume they are all built the same to work with any tractor. Big fan of Tillers and they are a MUST HAVE for NYC. Great Video

      FDNY does not switch the tractors. They have 1 Spare Tiller and 1 Training Tiller at the Rock. If they don’t have a spare tiller they will use a regular spare ladder.

      Tiller "trucks" go all the way back to the days of hand-drawn wagons...when the ladders were wooden and longer than the bed section is now. Most of the company (and later, horses) pulled the tow ropes and the front steering axle followed. The "tiller man" guided the rear wheels around tight corners with a beam connected to the rear axle sticking out from the rear of the ladder wagon, similar to the tow handle of a child's red wagon. I believe that following steering beam is where the term "tiller" originated.
      When horses and extension ladders arrived the tiller man moved to a removable seat and steering wheel atop the rig.

      Oh ok cool, is because how the city has been redesigning some of the city streets, making them more narrow and adding the protected bike lanes, I’ve seen a few years back they did a story on how they’re adding bike lanes without consulting the FDNY making it harder for apparatuses to turn.

    Probably a very obvious answer; understanding these rigs, outside of the buckets, are pre-piped, is that due to the fact it would be difficult for the water to be pumped that high up, the length of the stick, or it would be that the City would require the length to be higher, to better cover building fires?

    • @SkylerFire
      @SkylerFire  8 месяцев назад +2

      Tower Ladders are safer to use for defensive operations then using a Ladder / Tiller. FDNY will only use ladder pipe in a rare instance.

    • @unodonut
      @unodonut 8 месяцев назад +2

      Outside Vent. The OV’s main job is to vent the fire from the outside while the engine company extinguishes the fire from the inside. Venting the fire allows the heat and smoke to escape and allows the engine company to make an easier “push” into the fire area. Sounds simple right? Well, it does actually get quite a bit more complicated than that.
      The role of the OV should be fulfilled by an experienced firefighter mainly because this position is not under the direct supervision of an officer and is tasked with some important responsibilities as well as decisions to make such as…
      The ability to read fire as well as smoke conditions. The ability to determine when the appropriate time to vent is. The ability to determine when VES will be required. Can you determine the layout of the inside of a private dwelling by looking at the windows? If you need to VES a bedroom which window do you enter?
      These are just some of the decisions that an OV will have to make during a fire. It is worth mentioning again, that this position should be filled by an experienced firefighter. An inexperienced firefighter put into this position making the wrong decisions could have catastrophic results.
