    Great closeup look at a tower ladder. Very impressive and a vast improvement over the old “cherry pickers.” How did they get the nickname “Cavemen?”

    • @SkylerFire
      @SkylerFire  Год назад +12

      Many wonder how Engine 40 and Ladder 35 have become known as "The Cavemen." During the period of 1988 to 1993, a 60 story high rise building was built over top of the firehouse forcing the companies to be relocated to a temporary firehouse located under Lincoln center in one of the garages. The firehouse had no windows and consisted of many narrow passages to get around. During this time frame, the men of house were trying to create a patch for the companies that fit the firehouse. The suggestion for "The Cavemen" was made and the rest is history. The name still suits the firehouse today because of the lack of windows our firehouse has. Being situated under a 60 story high-rise doesn't leave much room between the columns for windows. The number of windows is so low that we refer to the locker room window as "the view."

    What does FDNY do for saw maintenance is it up to each house to maintain them or do they have centralized maintenance shop for small engine repairs?

    • @SkylerFire

      Each saw is tested at your change. 0900 and 1800 each day 365. Of something is wrong they send it to tool shops and will get a spare saw for time being.

    info thanks again just wondering if there’s any rhyme or reason on having the different ladders whether it be a straight stick tiller or tower ladder. and the soc support Do they use a certain type of ladder or are all the above used thanks.

    • @SkylerFire
      @SkylerFire  Год назад

      Tower Ladders are mainly used for removing victims, Master streams. Sticks are used as a regular ladder. Tillers are for tight streets

    Why does the truck have nozzles ?

    • @SkylerFire
      @SkylerFire  Год назад

      It’s for Winter Ops so they all carry hose and nozzles. In the event the engine can’t get to the hydrant or they arrive first they have the ability to stretch in off the hydrant.
      Another reason I believe is for community relations purposes, school events, they can have a line off the hydrant for the kids.

    @bobbybechtel4396 Год назад +2

    Any particular reason the tower ladders aren't standardized in lengths? Why not just make all of them 95 ft. in length? Also, that the company has extrication tools - how many MVA's do they run and do they do more than just simple door pops? I ask because the cribbing compartment is next to nothing. You're not going to crib much of anything with a few pieces of wooden blocks.

    • @SkylerFire
      @SkylerFire  Год назад +3

      The length of the truck will have a large rear end swing. A lot of tight streets in NYC. All Ladders have extrication tools. If it’s a Heavy Pin a Squad and Rescue also respond. Tower Ladder 35 covers the West Side Highway I would say 45% of there calls are MVAs
