pretty cool a ghost fleet that has survived the test of time and lives on, thanks for sharing the history of Govenors Island and its retro apparatus with us Skyler 👍
Another great video Skyler! Thanks for Fleet Fridays. It's good to see FDNY equipment that would not ordinarily be seen. It makes you value the FDNY and what is involved in what they do.
Nice video Skyler, brought back memories from the 90's when I used to have lunch there in the Burger King and bowl a game or 2 at the bowling ally - think it was like $1or $2 a game. That was when the USCG still had the island. It was like an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It was very quiet and peaceful. Did they tear down the brick apartment building that housed the USCG personnel and their families? It was on the west side of the island facing the Statue of Liberty. They also had an armory inside of Fort Jay (got to work in there once) and a 9 hole golf course as well. Sad about the firehouse; I remember the engines staffed by USCG personnel too, they were red not yellow back then. That was all pre 9-11-01! My father reported there during WWII after his indoctrination into the US Amy Air Corps - when the US Army had the island. Once told me the first thing they were ordered to do was police the area for cigarette butts.
Very beautiful island and peaceful! They knocked down all the buildings. FDNY did training in them years ago mainly all the houses are left a lot of them can’t be used due to asbestos but at-least they haven’t knocked them down! In time they are gonna have to build some kind of firehouse or emergency service station for the island cause what they have now is just unacceptable.
Hey Skylar. I really enjoyed looking at Governors Island I’ve been by it so many times but never seen what it’s like being on the Island. Very well done
Good morning from the Great State of Texas. Thank you for this video. It is fun learning about the not so everyday life of FDNY. This whole video was interesting. I learned things about Goveners Island I never knew. Thanks again for this video and have a good day and be safe.
Cool..i worked there with fdny in 04 and 05...it was a ghost town...almost 20 years ago..time flew...3 man crew rotation 24/7...im glad they kept it a park...we dont need any more housing condos or casino s...
Totally digging 'FLEET FRIDAY'S' !! Might you consider doing presentations on CITY ISLAND (it's unique compared to the rest of NYC), the FDNY SHOPS in Long Island City and the SEAGRAVE dealer in New Jersey where FDNY rigs are prepped prior to delivery. Just a thought. Thanks.
wow that all so old. i can’t believe they left it all like that and High command actually letting there firefighters live and work like that. That so bad. This is what i love about FDNY is so big and fleet everywhere. Without your fleet Friday vid i would’ve never known if them units. Amazing Catch Keep these videos going
The apparatus they replaced one of the Reserve Engines, should be replacing one of the Reserve Ladders soon! FDNY has been pushing for full staffing on the island even if it’s just daytime staffing as night time would require somewhere for the firefighters to sleep!
That picture you put in of the 3 bay brick firehouse was torn down? That’s a shame now they were put in that disgusting ware house bldg in the crap portion of the island 🏝? Yeah NY £!|^{#+=$7,/ sense ! Gotta love it! Thanks for showing us,I would never known! 👍🏻👍🏻
I agree with Robert the guys there need a decent fire house. They also need to do something with the old USCG rigs. A shame to see them sitting, especially the one outside!
I didn’t have time on my last visit to NYC to see the sites. I was there with my ex for a tombstone unveiling in Queens. Next time I’ll have to go visit Governors Island. Thanks for the great tour.
Nice footage of the island and the current fleet they have there! Those old E-Ones I believe they were, in the back would probably start right up and I would to get my hands on one. Hopefully in the future you can catch them running a response drill or something similar.
Those are KME Renegade chassis, however they have Duplex nameplates. They could have been a combination build or a re-chassis also, but they’re not Emergency One. As some of the more prominent apparatus builders began to go out of business during the ‘80s, KME was there readily snatching up the rights to certain chassis and designs to use for themselves. They did this with Maxim, Hendrickson, and Grumman to name a few. (hence the reason behind the KME Aerialcat, which used to be the Grumman Aerialcat) Emergency One did use a very similar looking cab design known as the Hurricane.
I can remember back in early 80's when stationed at the Training Center, the 3 bay station. used to wonder about how they would handle the multi story apartment buildings that used to be there. Holy cow where did those hills come from?
Glamping for ~$250/night {$350 after tax} with communal bathrooms. {cheapest option} Or $660/night {$816 tax/fees} for the little buildings with private bathrooms.
The old fire truck at the 14th minute is the same fire truck that put out the flames of the Fulton fish market fire. That's a straight ABC truck if you know what I'm talking about!
I see plenty of hydrants But I also see plenty of buildings that could become a large operation. So is the water supply adequate on the island or would marine companies be depended on for water supply?
I get upset and sad and proud anytime I get a notion of 9/11, wondering how different things would be if it never happened, if those who ran to danger were still here....thanks for this you earned another sub
One thing that would be different is that a bunch of these SOC apparatus wouldn’t exist. A large number of specialized apparatus was designed and purchased due to the inability to provide an adequate response to large scale incidents.
Excellent video … always nice to see different content and especially rare stuff like this . Great work. Do you know if NYPD has a similar detail on the island ? If it’s open to the public, things are bound to happen
Pretty sure those two old engines are old Military fire trucks. Many were that lime green color. A local department in my area stayed with that color cause their first truck was old military
When did the Fed’s leave the island ? I had 2 friends of mine that were Federal FF’s that worked on the island ! Also, the island was supposed to be built up with housing and commercial bldgs back around 2014 but there was a scandal that didn’t make the news, all I’ll say is that it involved bribery of union officials !

Yes it was

What ever happened to that old American LaFrance engine that was given to engine 34? I heard that it went to Governors Island, is it still there?
Rikers Corrections I believe has it now

Overtime staffing
I see plenty of hydrants But I also see plenty of buildings that could become a large operation. So is the water supply adequate on the island or would marine companies be depended on for water supply?
They have good water supply on the island it’s just the island is not manned all the time that’s the issue

Not 100% sure
The island has private security with retired cops that protect the island.
Do houses switch off or is it just an engine company?
Just Engine 525 is staffed here. Everything else is manned via companies from Manhattan coming over via ferry
Is 525 under Battalion 1?

Not FDNY
Can you post a Google Map picture of where this fire station is?
