So the moral of the story is: You can send your MX-5 to get a supercharged V8 and a bunch of dinky, confused bodywork that ruins the original lines of the car. Or you can just turbocharge it, run nearly the same power, and keep the exterior of the car decidedly un-screwed up.
The issue is you can do that to the 1.8 and gain more HP/TQ and have a more reliable engine that they make more parts for. I know for a fact the stock BP 1.8 was originally designed as a AWD turbo'd engine intended for rally racing. Which is why the 1.8 has oil squirters and other turbo-esque parts. The Miata's 1.8 is essentially a de-turbo'd, turbo engine. 1.6 is decent, but the 1.8 has the advantage in every category. There's no advantage to the 1.6 they even weigh about the same.
Honestly that was terrible. v8 with 300-400 hp and it did a 13sec quarter mile, cant even pull away from a 170 kw mx5 and the v8 isnt even much heavier,,... lol and they sell these as super cars
@ThePhan7em, not with the Lexus V8, all aluminium design makes it very light weight, plus it is placed further back than the original Mazda 4 cylinder maintaining its near 50-50 weight distribution
I agree with all the comments about the boring design choices for the front lights and bumper. From the front it looks like a Honda Del Sol (discontinued). I think if they made single headlamps with some straight edges and angles it might help it look meaner and more desired. - just a thought.
The V8 sounds awesome and you can get the V8 roadsters kit these days for the LS, but I was really surprised about the performance of the Turbo too in comparison. Mordern turbocharging with modern engine management on E85 with the 1.8L engine would have enough speed and reliabity to suit most people chasing more thrills. But again doesn't sound as good.
I can't believe they did so much work to completly rebuild the front chassis. The single piece foward opening hood is interesting, but someone needs to show them how a small block Ford or an LSX will fit in there without much modification. Not to mention a "430hp" supercharged V8 only just barely beating a turboed 1.6L. I love V8 Miatas, but that was unimpressive.
That Bullet sounds pretty good but that video seems to say that a turbocharged and intercooled forged standard 1.6l B6 engine in an NA is virtually a match for a supercharged 4.0l V8 that'll use much more fuel and detroy the near perfect factory handling!
killem89 Which is much more than doing a 1UZ-FE swap. The motor will run you under 1500 for good one with ECU and wiring harness. An r154 5-speed supra tranny goes for 1k-1500 or drop 2500 on the overkill v160 getrag 6-speed. You can run the rear-end from a turbo2 fc3s to handle the torque as it was designed to handle well over 300lb-ft. Those go for about 1000 at the most. Get yourself a custom drive shaft at a machine shop for about 300 bucks. The fc3s diff bolts up the the miata's rear sub-frame so no custom fab there. Depending on how good your metal fab and welding skills are, you can do your own custom mounts for the motor and transmission. You're looking at well under 5000 for parts if you absolutely must have the Getrag transmission. You have 300 hp to play with for much less than the cost of an LS1 swap that you're claiming will cost 14-15k. LS-swapped Miatas are completely pointless anyway. 3100lb Corvettes run those motors with 285 tires and struggle to put power down at times. You can't get anything bigger than a 225 street tire on a Miata(nobody makes them bigger for 15 or 16 inch wheels) so there's no point in putting more than 300 horsepower through a first or second gen Miata chassis.
It's still too much MX-5 to justify the cost unless it was your project. Sold as a finished product it's a pricey underperformer, but you will be wallet special... Also the guys in the states doing this with GM V8 are making a product that puts up great numbers.
Flying Miata will toss a Vette LS3 into a Miata and keep the balance close to stock! Open up the firewall and move the engine back. 500RWHP in 2400lbs! That's not a Bullett it's a Rocket!
Nice body style on the Bullet, but horrible balance, crappy suspension, and it looks like they need to work on their wheel/tire package to get the power to actually stick down. The car squats under acceleration and wants to drift off of every corner while the mx5 takes a great line, even with 300hp. Looks like an fun car, but very slow for a road course.
the V8 they're using in the Bullet is NOT a LS1... and engine isn't everything.. You could put a beefy engine into a miata, but your performance will still be dictated by the weakest performing part.. be it your transmission/drivetrain or your differential.. Could also be a raw difference of power between the different V8's.
Disagree.. it might LOOK like a chic car still, but this could be confused for a sleeper miata.. the power:weight ratio is far better with the bullet than a standard MX-5 (not engine swap MX-5).. infact, the ratio is probably a little more than I'd feel comfortable letting the mrs drive..
Methinks they should have used that "advanced 3D modeling" on revamping the suspension to be able to handle the power instead of wasting it on that hideous bodywork.
Why did they use a 1.6 Miata? The 1.8L has more power all over and makes a better turbo platform. They obviously wanted the bullet to win. A SC V8 versus a 1.6L Turbo'd, you couldn't at least bump the Miata's engine to the 1.8L version? Talk about bias.
@Ratava252 I was making a joke smart guy. Actual bullets and rockets and how ludicrous it is to call cars such things. Guess it was over your head. lol another aeronautic joke.

You can get more power out of a v-8 while not giving up reliability
You have a point, but the Bullet V8 has much softer wheel and suspension setup than the modded turbo one.

mx5 turbo less expensive and better on the track
