I really appreciate you! You make videos about great topics that no one does. Keep up the great work.
I love these videos😍 keep it up
Very helpful, thank you.
Thanks! Was wondering around this! Ofcourse I want the fastest and best product.
big thanks for the video
I choose UTM with win11 for my mac M1
UTM is great, win11 working very well
Thank you for making these videos! Do you have any insights in whether modern games are more streamlined, in terms of dependencies, installation directories and settings, compared to W95/98/XP games? It always appears so easy to install heavy graphics games in your videos. In comparison, the amount and variety of tinkering I’ve had to do to make retro games play perfectly in a virtualised environment. It has payed off, but I always wish for a simpler retro-gaming setup that makes installing such games a breeze too.
They release the final vmware products. Can't wait for your review especially on a full spec macbook 16in m1.
Another thing I'd like to mention about Parallels is that there's a lot more "under the hood" things it does as well, such as managing resource and memory usage depending on if your VM is actively being used (if you're messing with an application). And in the pro version, you can have it start up in headless mode so that it's always available all the time instantly. On my machine, I'm basically running both windows and macOS -- there's no real distinction, both types of apps work. I will say DirectX12 and Vulkan WILL NOT WORK on any VM for Mac. There is no workaround. This is a limitation of the Metal API that simply doesn't have the features necessary to translate DX12/Vulkan. I believe I read the next Metal version will have the needed features, but as of today that is not a possibility.
I tried both and went with UTM for the price. Parallels was far easier to get up and running than UTM but it's only done once so the investment is upfront.
Parallels is great but no Ventura Metal 3 support correct? Most of the stuff I want to run requires openGL 4 or greater. Otherwise, yes, its perfect for standard windows usage.
I tried all three. Fusion doesn't yet have a complete set of drivers and no hardware acceleration. UTM is somewhat better and I actually found installing W11 to be easier with UTM. Both are free (Fusion Player). But, I can't ignore how polished, simple, and robust Parallels is. Of course, you pay for that simplicity but with one click a working install of Windows pops up ready to go. The lack of drivers in Fusion was a deal breaker for me. I could easily live with UTM. But with a little searching I was able to get Parallels Pro for $89.
per year.
@@bbozlaker yeah, more and more developers are following Microsoft and going to a subscription licensing model. But, even at full price it works out to $10 a month and I spend more than that on beer.
How were you able to get it at $89? I'm unable to find any promo that still works, including the one in this video.
What happens when Sonoma is released? And the next macOS version after that?
I like Parallels the app, but not Parallels the business.
UTM for me. (At least till VMWare update happens) VMware tools is incomplete Fusion 13 on M1, only bare essentials (Network and video drivers) are installed by Powershell only. No shared foldsr nor Cut/Copy/Paste. it's a major step backwards as i rely on Shared Folders constantly between Host and Guest and only Windows 11-ARM.
UTM mave have anonying issue like must power off just to edit/view settings (particularly when other virtual products offer this, makes UTM look bad) but the positives if running x86 OS on M1 (i judt installed Windows 7 tonight) on an M1, there is really no noticable slowdown (desoite you sre emulating on-the-fly)
Is there a website / resource that shows which games are working perfectly for Parallels / VM / UTM / Native?
How about W11 USB support in either of these virtual machines?
If M chips had a sr-iov like feature, then it could perharps be possible to use hardware acceleration without special presciptive apis although yeah it still ain't be possible perhaps due to being an ARM Architecture thus for now also you can only do this on linux /windows i think so yeah imo its too expensive to run windows great on an M1/M2 mac.
just here want to say that a new octane update is out. DeNoiser finally working with native C4D.
How is Parallels for streaming? I’d heard hit and miss things regarding compatibility with capture cards spanning back to 2019 but I’ve not seen any consistent testing, just some brief trial anecdotes.
This is a concern of mine as well as we do streaming as well and I’ve had severe challenges with capture cards trying to use parallels, windows 11 and vmix
Did not expect this video to work with the clickbait can confirm.
On Geekbench test, the VMware and UTM has the Windows 11 Pro but, the Parallels it has Windows 11 Home.
Does it make any difference?
Do you know which is the most secure to run windows 11 on mac: Parallels or VMware or UTM (doing work from home and work in finance which has sensitive information)?
Great vid as always Andrew! Thanks for getting me into the virtualisation world. I've set up W11 ARM on my M1 Pro 16" and it's running great, I'm currently playing GTA4. Wanted to ask if you tried any of the FIFA games in Parallels? I have FIFA 17 and it doesn't want to start. There's a process in Task Manager that tickles the CPU a bit, then goes away. Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks!
You use Parallels Desktop to run GTA4?
Which one is better for Parallels, win11 arm or the regular one?
Not Using the original charger degrades the battery faster if the brick is cheap and has no protocols
Hello nice video :) Specific question but, what would you recommend to play overwatch on MacBook M1 Max ? thank you
Does UTM 4 fix the laggyness from UTM 3?
I have an M1 Pro (8/14 cpu/gpu), considering hitting the button on parallels, mainly use my VM for VS 2022 (currently on UTM 3) they don't make it easy to decide which version you actually need standard, pro, subscription or one time purchase - any advice based on my use case (almost purely VS 2022 for winforms/wpf)?
I've never used UTM 3, but am currently on UTM 4. I've used VS 2022 (not the ARM version) and it runs smoothly enough, although initial loading times can be up to a minute. I think that as long as you are not doing any graphical work, UTM will be a much better option than parallels, considering you only need it for VS
UTM is functional but I’m noticing the screen flashing when mousing around , and the webdav powered shared folder is really really slow at copying files .
Legacy, games or… *niche business apps that have no Mac versions, nor are they yet in the cloud* . I’m a professional translator and this is exactly my situation. It’s not just games and legacy apps, ppl!😢
Remember wine bottler and wine
Waiting for utm for ipad ;)
Question when is dx12 coming to crossover
just swapped from parallels as they are a subscripton service and vmware workstaion for personal use is free and running windows 11 on my m1 no problem.
Wonderful
Who is better?
6:39 The Standard Edition is a $100 flat fee, *not* a yearly subscription.
Yeah, but it's limited to 8GB which is terrible. Fuck their subscription.
Hi, can UTM perform well with applications like Power BI?
I’m using Siemens NX with parallels on my M1 Max MacBook. Everything works fine except renderings und CAD :/
Hi Andrew I tried the coupon code for the Pro edition but apparently it’s not working?
Where can I open it again? It disappeared after restarting my mac
do i need to install anti virus software in parallels or am i fine with the defender?
Ok, so I'm not a techie and I'm trying to understand this VM stuff! I grasp that it VM that I can run a 2nd OS on/thu my Mac desktop m1.And having 2 external displays running that Apple support says (I, we) can't run! Thanks Apple M1! SOOO if I install VMWare Fusion 13 and run OS Windows 10 or 11. Bring up my TD Ameritrade I will not be able to move my TD charts out of whatever monitor I am running it on? I won't be able to grab and drop charts to my other displays? Sorry to be such a novice!
When in VMware Fusion 13, (Or Parallels) with windows 11 up and running, on my M1, can I drag and drop to my Multiple Displays. I have a Sonntech Displaylink for multiple monitors, it works great, I want to move charts around. I guess one would say multiple desktops?
Sorry for ext question. I'm trying to solve my $$$$ M1 issue! By finding a work around Apples GREED!
Can you make a new version of this video
Thank you ❤
Does using vm have a big impact on TBW on ssd?
Sir pls tell me it support java jdk and internet explorer or not … plss make a video of it
Hello, Great video! I'm sorry if this has been asked and answered already. Has anybody found a way around the anti-cheat software on Steam and Ubisoft both that keeps games like Ghost Recon:Breakpoint from launching? I have a new studio with Parallels and the ARM windows 11 system installed. Thanks in advance.
Fusion is now free yeay 😍
How to access the camera
Unreal engine DOES NOT work with mac though :/
I just purchased an M1 mac mini. I thought I could use bootcamp as I have done in the past. I see thats not the case with the M1. I need windows to run finance software. Is it advisable to use Parallels or VMware or UTM? Or should I return the machine and look for an intel mac mini?
Parallels is the easiest and most polished solution.
your channel's logo is kamehameha yameyameha
Does anyone have the UTM discord link? I look it up and I keep getting some school
hi how to use emulator android in mac os ventura
👍
What about the new version of virtual box?
Parallels is the only one of the 3 in the video to have graphics acceleration.
Virtual box is still in the dev version and unstable for daily use

I’ve tried setting up Ubuntu 22.04 through virtualbox 7.0 on a MacBook M1 but no luck, with UTM it was a breeze and also super fast and crisp performance
I tried installing on VirtualBox but it says “A critical error has been thrown and the VM has been stopped.” And then it went into Guru Meditation mode.
UTM is my favourite
Is OpenGL 3.3 working for Windows 11 ARM on M1 mac?
Looks like OpenGL 3.3 is working with the latest update as of today.
I am not paying a yearly prescription !
UTM has a 1 second ag vs parallel...anyone has mba m1 that can shed some light?
“AG” ?
I just wanna use excel for running power query because excel in mac can not do that. Please advise whether UTM is enough to accommodate this part bro ?
Yes Excel should work fine through UTM.
@@Andytizer thanks bro appreciate it 🙏🏽
Ms office works in all of them
Excel Power Query is the only reason I’m interested in this.
Question... The virtualbox is functional for M1/M2?
Still no, only some 'dev&beta' build, but I didn't manage it to work.
@@oleksandr.brazhii 👍🏻✌🏻️
TLDR just use Parallels!
All good and nice, but whats with the fact that a lot of videos showing overwatch 2 running, but it never works by me or the people I have talked
When in Parallel 18, with windows 11 up and running, on my M1, can I drag and drop to my Multiple Displays. I have a Sonntech Displaylink for multiple monitors, it works great, I want to move charts around within my displays. THANKS
Parallels is easier to use. And it has great compatibility
other two are free
Yeah. For $100, it better. Lol.
@@livedreamsg Yes it is, for $100 per year which is just $8 per month it's much better, it actually works, and has some neat features.
@@xskullcrow3269 Do consider that you're paying about $250 per year for the MAC ITSELF. (if you get the current Mac Pro (M1X) price level at 2500 and use it about 10 years or resell for about the same drops in price)
@@bridgerdyck387 I do appreciate the benefits of Parallels, it can cost $100 per year but its good software, why you would buy a $2500 dollar mac if you can get a much much cheaper PC? Because you like it and for you it's worth it. Also, if I were to buy Parallels for the price of that Mac it would be 25 years of license, in that time those 2500 wouldn't mean anything compared to everything I have spent.
I hope VMware moves past the preview stage, and fixes all the drawbacks so it worked like Fusion did with x86. All those things were not issues with x86 (including the features you mentioned they do not have now...they DID previouwly) and Fusion was always good because it A) is cheaper (paid version), B) is not on a stupid subscription, C) allows for installs on mulitple devices. The previous versions of x86 Fusion was as good as, if not better, than Parallels. Still waiting for someone to hack a mac to boot directly onto Windows for ARM though....or better yet, the game manufactuers should see profit value in just making the games native for Apple Silicon. Because I use multiple devices I see no reason to ever get Parallels, simply not worth it. Personally, I don't care about gaming at ALL (never do it) but I think the developers are really missing out, now that Macs are becoming extremely popular, and the code is already similar to iOS anyway.
How does x86 emulation perform on each product? For example, install the x86 version of the same OS for each and compare.
TLDR: It's gonna be *SLOW* and buggy, only barely usable on like Win XP
You can't just run x86 OSs. The processor itself only knows ARM64 (and 32-bit ARM), so the OS has a layer (like Rosetta 2) that turns x86 executables into ARM64 executables. You can't exactly do that with an OS because it is very low-level, and it might call essential features specifically for x86 processors. What you _can_ do is have an emulation (NOT virtualization) that simulates what an x86 processor would do, but in software instead of hardware. It differs from virtualization because it doesn't directly run the instructions and then switches on system calls, but simulates a whole computer and essentially runs code that runs x86 instructions. This way, it doesn't get much hardware acceleration as virtualization does.
On Parallels you can only do virtualisation, so no x86 or x86_64 OS. UTM allows usable performance on Win XP (if forced multicore) on M1 Max - good enough for car diagnostic tools and devices with drivers unavailable on ARM64, but since there is no GPU acceleration, any 3D app is unusable
@@HuntingKingYT So you’re better off having the guest OS be native and take care of the emulation for apps, like done here, instead of having the host OS emulate for the whole guest OS?
@@nachiopistachio Yes. There's no point of having to *also* emulate low-level OS stuff.
@@HuntingKingYT Got it, thank you
How can I install huge apps on that virtualization ?
Using UTM it popup error that 1,5 GB app is to large to install on virtual machine. Should I use some virtual disk or maybe Parallels has that option to use virtual disk and let me instal big apps ?
Which VM is good for Gaming on M1 ? Please Help
Don’t game on M1. It’s for productivity work.
No actual comparison?
Can i actually install and crack Autocad on Windows in Utm? Im buying an m1 14inch and im really thinking bout it
Tried in parallel and works fine
PAHHLLELS
I don't need Windows but Linux on my Mac hardware...😉
I also had to download Windows image manually with Parallels because the automatic installation failed every time for me.
Also I got Parallels Pro for $39 for a year on B&H Photo Video.
UTM can use Apple Virtualization and run Rosetta on Linux.
how do you get it for 39$? its all 100+ for me
@@pb5335 The deal is over. I posted about it here before, but the channel owner chose to promote his own links instead.
@@magicpoopfart8363 damn, well thanks for mentioning it and that makes sense, he probably gets a kick back with his discount code lol
Worth only if you have 16gb ram.
for 100bucks a year i rather go for geforce now :P
To run Quicken?
@@majorgear1021 you can use free virtualisation if you don’t need gpu performance without any problems.

Parallel will let you use the refresh rate of your monitor, in utm it's only limited to 60hz, however utm is free...
VMWare also stuck at 60Hz... Only Parallels can do high refresh rate.
