- A couple weeks ago, I heard about a virtualization app for the Mac called UTM, and considering that Parallels was the gold standard, I decided to put it to the test. Enjoy the video!

The Full Steps to Install Windows 11 on UTM in Virtualize Mode List I Wrote:
1. Download the ARM64 VHDX file of Windows 11 Beta or Dev onto your Mac
2. Go into UTM
3. Create a new virtual machine in the Virtualize mode
4. Adjust the RAM size and the CPU cores
5. Boot into the VM
6. Wait for the Windows 11 Setup Screen to show
7. Once you appear at the network stage, go into CMD Prompt and type OOBE\BYPASSNRO
8. Once the VM restarts, set up the VM as normal
9. After Windows says “Almost there”, shut down the VM
10. Use the SPICE tools iso as a drive on the VM
11. Boot back into Windows
12. Go into the SPICE tools iso in File Explorer and run the setup
13. Once installed, restart the VM
14. Sign into Microsoft Account in Settings
15. Install Microsoft Store by searching for it on adguard and downloading all required files (x64 versions)
16. Install them using PowerShell
17. Open Microsoft Store and download UUP Media Creator
18. Run the program, choose desired build, select architecture, select language, select version, select compression type, choose location, and wait to download
19. Use a flash drive to transfer the file from the VM to the Mac
20. Delete the VHDX VM
21. Create a new virtual machine via the Virtualize option again, but this time select the iso to install
22. Choose RAM size, CPU cores, and storage size
23. Boot into the VM
24. When you appear at the activation stage, go into cmd prompt and type “regedit”
25. Go into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup and create a new key titled LabConfig
26. Inside LabConfig, create two DWORD (32-bit) values titled “BypassTPMCheck” and “BypassSecureBootCheck” and set their values to 1
27. Close out of the registry editor and cmd prompt and move on with the installation
28. Wait for the Windows 11 Setup Screen to show
29. Once you appear at the network stage, go into CMD Prompt and type OOBE\BYPASSNRO
30. Once the VM restarts, set up the VM as normal
31. After Windows says “Almost there”, shut down the VM
32. Use the SPICE tools iso as a drive on the VM
33. Boot back into Windows
34. Download MediaCreationTool.bat and offlineinsiderenroll and set them up to bypass more Windows 11 limitations
35. Go into the SPICE tools iso in File Explorer and run the setup
36. Once installed, restart the VM
37. Sign into Microsoft Account in Settings
38. Install Microsoft Store by searching for it on adguard and downloading all required files (x64 versions)
39. Install them using PowerShell
40. Install every missing stock app, including Mail and Calendar, Photos, Calculator, Feedback Hub, and the Windows Web Experience Pack for widgets
41. Activate Windows if you have a code
42. Set screen resolution to required size
43. Go back into the registry editor and head to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm and create a new DWORD (32-bit) value titled ForceEffectMode and set its value to 2
44. Restart the VM
Finally, we’re finished

Your video is really not bad for a start! However, if you compare Parallels and UTM, you should also mention that Parallels only includes virtualization and not emulation.
On an Apple Silicon ARM processor, you can ONLY use Windows 11 ARM with Parallels. It works great there, but with UTM you can also emulate Windows 98 x86 and still use software that would never run on Windows 11.
So it depends on the kind of application.
It is also very important to mention that Parallels with updates simply costs 99 euros a year. UTM is completely free and is further developed by the community.
So are you really dependent on Windows on a Mac and do you know that the programs you want to use also run on Windows 11 ARM and do you have money left -> Parallels
However, if you only have to use certain Windows programs from time to time -> UTM.
By the way: You have the best game performance with Wine and all its variants (Winebottle/Wineskin/Porting Kit/Crossover)
this provided a ton of info, thanks so much!
Surprisingly well spoken for someone so young. Entertaining and comprehensive. I wish you luck with everything ahead of you
thanks so much, makes my day!
I agree
I’m a computer systems expert and you’ve covered this pretty well, one of the better vids on the subject. I think you’ll go far with your future vids, much luck.
thanks so much, this means a lot!
Honestly, I never comment on any youtube videos. However, I've been looking all over for information in regards to UTM emulation vs UTM virtualization for the past few hours. You were the only person I found to provide great information between the two WITH an actual comparison. Really good job. Keep it up.
this means so much, you didn’t just make my day, you made my week!
Really a great video! Even for one 10 months old at this point, mostly everything’s still relevant and right to the point!
thanks so much dude!
Very good video man, thank you!
welcome!
Excellent work. Keep it up!
thanks!
Awesome video! Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much!
Thank you, Ritik!
you’re welcome!
Very well explained
thanks!
Thanks for the content)
welcome!
Great review, great video! Could you please share the list with the steps? Btw, do you think win11 virtualization can handle Power BI and excel with lots of data?
i’ve put the list in the description, but i think it should be able to handle it those files, i’m not exactly sure though.
Do you know which is the most secure to run windows 11 on mac: Parallels or VMware or UTM (doing work from home and work in finance which has sensitive information)?
Would you be able to create a video that compares the benchmark scores (Cinebench) of UTM and Parallels on a Windows 10 machine running on a Mac?
i will probably be able to send a link to the photo of the scores when i get back home in a few days, currently on a trip.
Running bootcamp on my Mojave i9 Intel pretty much broke my Mac. And it wouldn’t download the win operating system so I used parallels but now I don’t wanna pay. Would UTM be good for work?
If you’re using UTM for not very intensive work applications (like Microsoft Office), then it’s perfectly fine!
hi, does utm offer better performance than parallels?
as i said in this video, utm does not offer better performance than parallels, but that’s helped by the fact that utm is free software.
If you've been using VMWare on anIntel Mac, the question is moot point anyway. Both VmWare and UTM use OpenGL, while Perallels uses Metall
Are you able to use the camera from you MacBook on the UTM? I've downloaded it && I believe i've run into a problem I need to use windows for a job && i dont want to have to buy a new computer yet
i’m pretty sure that if you have an external camera, you’ll be able to access it from the top bar in utm, but i’m not sure about internal cameras.
@@techyOS Thanks for the reply! it doesn't work with the build in camera
@@juliamarquardt6580 ohhhhhhh, that sucks if you have to do video conferencing on the virtual machine
Thank you so much, I am wondering how to enable features like virtual desktop gesture in URM, please tell me. You are the only one who can help me with this. 🙏🙏
Also, can you please make a video with WSL2 in windows in UTM and how it performs?
Thank you so much for making this video
i’m not exactly sure what you mean by those two things, can you elaborate?
Okay
1st.
Windows has gestures
three finger and four finger gestures
I three finger gestures to swipe virtual desktops, and I use four fingers gesture to control volume.
How to make ut work it macOS sonce it has three finger gestures too (I am talking about the trackpad.)
Next windows come with WSL2 which lets you ssh into a linux virtual machine making windows a powerful developer workstation. Please check if it works in UTM.
Is it clear now dear?🙇♂️
awesome in depth review. an older style video is refreshing - nowadays tech youtubers are just informercials
thanks so much, made my day!
Vmware fusion as well. The thing is UTM doesn't support TPM for windows 11, fusion does, but not as good driver support
yeah, i tried out vmware fusion as well, not as much of a plug and play solution as UTM
I think as of this writing, Parallels is your only real choice for running Windows games inside a Windows VM on an Apple Silicon Mac. UTM does allow you to use Rosetta, though, so your Linux ARM64 VMs can run Linux AMD64 binaries at basically full speed. AFAIK, Parallels hasn't incorporated this yet.
oh definitely true, minecraft barely runs on utm
how to use microsoft 360 apps on this like word and powerpoint they don't work
when i tried downloading the microsoft 365 suite from the microsoft store, it worked perfectly, including word and powerpoint. can you explain your issue further?
@@techyOS its alright I got it thanks for the reply!
@@tasneemkhalid284 you’re welcome!
thank you so very much for me not to waste time. very good video. in fact you explained the processes better than many tec experts.
well done
oh yea i'm not buying parallels
you’re very welcome (good decision to not buy parallels)!
Can you please try to play Fortnite on the virtualize mode on UTM 4.0
i don’t have utm currently installed, but i will try sometime soon
@@techyOS thanks
Setting up Windows under UTM is pretty easy - they provide a script in the gallery that does all the steps for you.
it’s still harder than parallels though, that’s something else…
@@techyOS Yeah agreed - it's no way as easy as Parallels and in fact Parallels is what I ended up using in the end.
and i’ve found that setting windows up on an intel mac with UTM is far easier than with an apple silicon mac.
Parallels is so good because developers are being paid to deliver good work. Not so with free software.
you have a point there, but the fact that the developers of the utm made the app free in the first place is a big deal.
I cant play minecraft bedrock with utm?
do you mean that the game runs quite slowly, or that it’s literally inaccessible?
@@techyOS inaccessible.
