  • An interesting family of games, probably derived from chess. Including Stratego, L'Attaque, Generals, Luzhanqi, Doushouqi, and a few others. These games have many things in common: a simple orthoganal move, a goal of reaching a certain (usually stationary) piece or place (the "flag"), usually water or mountains as barriers, and a pecking order of strong vs. weak pieces. Evolving in Asia and Europe/America at the same time, the exact line of development of these closely related games is a tantalizing mystery! - AncientChess.com

I don't think that Xiangqi is more popular than chess. While Xiangqi is popular in China and south east asia, Chess is far more popular in the West, The Americas, and is gaining extreme growth in China, India, and the rest of the world, while Xiangqi is in decline.
Though it does pain me that the vast majority of Westerners have never heard of Xiangqi, and I hope that one day, its popularity will one day take off. It is after all a very interesting variation with lots of potential.

I don't think that Chinese chess can be more popular than international chess. (almost) Nobody even knows about it in India and west. While chess is going popular in China also. I've also seen that report on Wikipedia but if u will just search 'number #1 or most popularboard game in the world, the answer is chess. So I literally believe that this is just a fake theory spread by Chinese players to famous Xiangqi. Love ur vid :)

Hello there. Where did you get the 16 piece dou shou qi?

Nice!!! I would love to learn how to play all of them. I like the idea of hidden values, it adds a lot of excitement.

It would be interesting if someone were able to do some statistical research on exactly how popular the various games are. I have seen reports that xiangqi is the 'most-played' game, but I don't know who is really analyzing and who is speculating. I'm just going by what I've read. On the other hand, I do believe xiangqi is gaining in popularity in other parts of the world, though the Chinese characters tend to limit its appeal.

Same stratego set I had as a kid! Stealth chess just seems like it wouldn't work at all. If going for variants 960, 3 check, four player is where it's at.

Thanks for the comment. It's good to hear from someone who has experience with these games!
Stealth chess is great for kids in chess class. They love it! and it reinforces the basic rules of chess. Sure, on a grander scheme it's kind of silly (but can still be very tricky ... imagine a piece that has been moving and capturing like a pawn -- but finding out it's a queen!)...For the Big Story about chess variants (including many more "capture-the-flags"), check out this video: ruclips.net/video/-k_-UbPAQvE/видео.html

Yes, great games! I have a video of how to play dou shou qi (the animal game, no hidden values), and will soon be putting up a video of how to play Luzhanqi (Chinese game like Stratego).

What is the game with the rules in Chinese you cannot read? Can you point me to any resources available about it? I don't actually speak Chinese but I am interested in learning what I can about it

I have learned a lot more about the history of these games since the time this video was made -- there's a whole chapter dedicated to these in our new book A History of Chess: Its Development and Variations through Centuries and Civilizations

Thanks for letting us know -- no harm done! I always wonder how I good, interesting videos can get thumbs-down's ... why would anyone bother watching a video just to give it an anonymous negative mark? Now I know ... a little drop of water, a touch screen ... it can happen! I'll assume that's how I got thumb-down's on my other videos as well :) Enjoy my videos -- I have many!

Thanks for giving us this information!
It's great to hear from people who have experience with games inside China.
What part of China are you from?
