    I just found this at a thrift store for $3. Didn't have any rules in the box, but I knew that RUclips wouldn't let me down.
    Great vid!

    I literally had to watch this three times to try and understand the game, and absolutely no luck. Then I watched it for a fourth time just to listen to the guys voice, very soothing.

    I remember seeing it in the late 70s, and then it all but vanished until a decade ago, so it seemed to me. I tried to explain it to people, but no one understood. Now it's back, and people "get it". Thanks for an enjoyable video about how to play it!

    This is the best RUclips overview of Cathedral that I've found so far - thank you for making it. I've just bought the wooden version, and the rules pamphlet that comes with it is less than superb (for example, in the diagram, the light and dark pieces are mislabelled), so it's good to have a more carefully put together reference like this.

    This is incredible!! A friend gave me a complete set of this game years ago, but there was no name or indication for what the game was called to see if there were any actual rules or not! I've tried looking for "Castle building game" to no avail, but after years of on and off searching I just stumbled upon your video purely by coincidence!
    In our house, we just assumed it was a coffee table puzzle game where the point was simply to just get all the pieces to fit back into the board successfully! We do always start with the cathedral though! Even with no written rules it just feels like the right way to start! Lol
    Thank you so much for sharing this gift from your childhood! I'm eager to play with a friend with this new variant!

    Thanks for explaining! Just bought a game called blokus which is similar, tetris pieces placed kn a board but only the diagonal edges can touch and players play 2 colours each. This is a beautiful variation I will look out for. As a chess lover and tactile person, stone things and fitting items in place make me happy 😊

    I just 3d printed this game without knowing the rules. It closes into a nice book for the book shelf. Didn't really care for the rules but said ehh let me youtube it. Now I can't stop listening to this guys voice

    Thank you for the instruction! Very helpful! I have to say though, we were trying to read the instructions that came with the game and were a little confused and someone in the house had the tv blasting so it was hard to concentrate.. then we looked up your video and your music is so much louder than your voice 😆.

    Thank you for explaining the rules! I bought this on a outdoor market today, I thought it looked so cool. At home I tried to read the rules, but it was late and I was tired so I went to RUclips and found your channel :D This is going to be great. Cheers from Norway!

    What happens when you build a line of pieces from one side to another... can you claim, like, half the board?

    • @frostbourne5770
      @frostbourne5770 2 года назад +1

      Very rare/hard to pull off, but yep. The smaller portion of the board (if you cut close to half) is what you'd claim as territory.

    Great video tutorial for this amazing game! One question I had, though: So, surrounding a single opponent block removes it from the space, but the opponent can re-place that piece on their turn.... so what's stopping the opponent from putting back in the place it was ejected from?

    • @Hogwa5hGaming
      @Hogwa5hGaming  3 года назад

      Any area surrounded by a player's buildings becomes their territory, meaning that only they can place their buildings there. This doesn't happen if there are more than one building of a different color inside your newly surrounded area.

    But say you block off a section, what side can you claim. Is it the smallest area? Because in 1or 2 moves You could claim the whole board.

    • @frostbourne5770
      @frostbourne5770 2 года назад +1

      It would be the smaller section of the board. Otherwise yeah, would totally break the game.

    Quick question…. The instructions say “the game ends when no further moves can be made by either player.” Does that mean that the game stops abruptly when a player either runs out of pieces or cannot fit his/her next piece on the board? Or, can the other player continue to place pieces until they can also no longer fit any more?

    • @frostbourne5770
      @frostbourne5770 2 года назад

      If one player is unable to make moves, but the other is. Then the other plays pieces until they also are unable to play anymore. Then game ends and you count up any remaining pieces for your score.
      So, with that said. Limiting how much your opponent can build by cutting off their territory can give you a sizeable advantage.

    Notice that one guy has solved the game, and he/they suggested a new start rule to balance this: The white player places one building. The dark player then places the cathedral and one piece. Then players alternate one and one piece. A match consists of two rounds, alternate start. Total lowest surplus squares wins.
