What do you think? Are you a fan of pre-loved luxury or no?

I have gone to both Gucci and LV to make big purchases and didn’t feel anything special. I have ordered preloved items from fashionphile and poshmark and got receipt, box, dust bag and the item and it felt more luxurious than the store. You could play some jazz much and have your own wine if you are into alcohol while unboxing. I avoid the traffic and the mayhem by ordering from my bed. That’s Luxury to me 😄

I just got my first chanel. Was a vintage bag that I've been looking for forever. And it came in pristine condition. I had been chatting with the seller for several weeks And it just felt so special already. When the box came, I had some champagne.
And a fruit and cheese plate.

I think elitism may be coming into play here. Some people are very resentful that luxury goods are no longer restricted to those who can afford to drop large sums of money on a new bag on a whim. If these items are accessible to people outside that social strata, it dilutes their value to elitists.
And some just don't want others to have nice things.
Perhaps it comes down to motive. If you are buying a bag because you think it is a thing of beauty, a luxurious experience yippy can enjoy with every wearing, then who cares how much you paid? But if you buy a bag for the status it confers, then I can see being bitter over that status being rendered less exclusive by the pre-loved market.
For the record, I Only buy pre-loved, and agree 100% with your statements regarding quality.

Pre loved is luxury. Luxury is personal. I wish people would not trying to determine what others determine is luxury to them.

Years ago I would have told you that the only thing that is missing is the luxury experience in the boutique. But these days, if you don’t have an SA that you know, most of the time, this experience is not even there. There’s nothing luxurious about waiting in line to get in a boutique where most of the good items are already gone! As soon as you get out of the store, nobody can tell where you got the bag from. It’s the same same. A designer bag will always be a designer bag! So to me, it’s the same, it is luxury!

Luxury is luxury regardless of how old or new the item is.
In fact IMO older luxury items hold more of the “luxury factor” than newer items due to alleged reduction in quality.
Although the purchase experience may vary, ultimately luxury comes down to the product.
To use the product year after year, enjoy it aging gracefully, even passing it on to a loved one.
There are few things that you can never get back once gone.
One of the biggest is time. Luxury is meant to provide reliability and consistency that ultimately saves time as you dont need to replace it.
IMO, the items showing damage due to alleged poor quality is where luxury is being lost.
The challenge with pre-loved is that there is no luxury experience to hide behind. Either its a great product to the customer or not. This may be in part why what is popular is on pre-loved is vintage. Gold was gold for a certain brand, canvas was more hardy for another certain brand, and the leathers didnt crack for another certain brand.

Of course it counts! That's like saying a castle or mansion is not luxurious because you weren't the first inhabitants! I enjoy pre-loved luxury handbags for many reasons, including the fact that many of the items were made with higher quality than today's items. I don't need a SA to pretend to be my friend, and I can buy my own champagne.

Thanks for talking about this! I didn't even realize some people felt secondhand doesn't count as luxury?? I still think of it as a luxury item, but I understand that there are layers to the experience. If they buy LV or something online directly from the store, but still online, do they think of it as a luxury? What if it's from a consignment shop new with tags and box? 🤷🏻‍♀Even in boutique how "luxurious" the experience is will vary greatly. We all use the word 'luxury' casually, and why shouldn't we! Getting my nails done is a luxury. Buying nice bread from a local bakery is a luxury. Having a $40 meal out is a luxury. I don't see why some people want to restrict the definition unless they just want to feel superior (gross).

Of course it is luxury. Whomever made the original comment that it wasn’t is silly.
Luxury is in the eye of the beholder. It’s something one doesn’t need and perhaps shouldn’t buy that makes it one feel happy and good. If that’s a $40 bag from Target it’s luxury.

I buy both new from the boutique and preloved.
I totally agree with you. A luxury handbag is a luxury handbag whether it's new from the boutique or preloved. For example, French people enjoy buying antique goods, which have been owned by people decades ago or even centuries ago, because they have a special value that brand new items don't have. There are massive antique markets in France. Also, buying preloved items is contributing to the global environment.
I think it's fine to only buy new from the boutique for various reasons, but if someone wants to assert that buying new from the boutique is superior and buying preloved is inferior because it's not luxury or whatever, then that person is just clinging on to this concept of luxury to make herself feel worth something in order to compensate for an inferiority complex. Dayle of Dayle's Addiction is like that. I find it pretentious and obnoxious. I think that kind of mindset is really small and petty. I used to like her but now that I see her true colors, I have lost respect. It's so funny how she actually says "I am a nice person" on her video. Truly nice people don't say things like that, because they don't need to, because they are confident.

I'm just going to add my thoughts before watching the video. Just to answer the question at hand. So, I feel that, yes, pre-loved luxury DOES count as luxury. I feel that just because you buy it second hand and possibly at a discounted price, it doesn't make the item any less special. The item is what it is. Sure, the whole thing with going into a boutique and getting "the works" is part of it but at the end of the day, it's all about the item and how you feel when using/wearing it. If I were to sell my luxury pieces, I would still promote them to be luxury pieces because they are. Especially if there is no wear and tear 😊

Yes, pre-loved is luxury. Going to a boutique, waiting in line, and dealing with an SA (whether or not they are friendly), is not luxurious to me. Luxury is how well the bag was made, and packaged, what it means to you, and how you feel wearing it or owning it. Pre-loved is new to you. And if it is something you saved up for or worked really hard to find - it's already special.

Loved this topic. Huge fan of preloved. I think those that are running around stating that people didn’t get “the store experience “ are snobs who are trying to one up the person who purchased preloved. Sorry you can’t make me feel guilty about saving money on the same luxury purchase you and I both made. Oh and with my savings I grabbed a watch, a wallet, and their ready to wear. When I step into a lux store and a snob does, they won’t know the differences in my purchases nor care because at the end of the day they know either way I have money to SPEND just like the snob. I’ve gotten wonderful service in luxury stores and don’t need an “experience “, which I’ve had a couple of times by the way, to define me as a person or my happiness. It was nice but it’s just as nice to sit at home and get my orange & brown boxes without the hassle 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂

I buy both new and pre-loved luxury. To say that something isn’t “real luxury” because it was briefly owned by another person is just wrong IMO. Most of my new Louis Vuitton purchases aren’t done in store - I order remotely from my CA and she ships it to my house. Is that not “real luxury” because I didn’t have the “boutique experience”? For me, going to the store is more of a hassle than a luxury. I work full time and have two young kids - so delivery is the ultimate luxury experience to me!🤣🤣 As long as the item is authentic, it doesn’t matter if I buy it from a reseller or the store. 🤷‍♀️

I'm glad to hear you changed your mind about selling the Chanel Jumbo (for now at least) 😅
A bag it's always a bag buying from the shop or pre-loved, I prefer vintage to new ones from the shop not only cause of the price but basically because of the quality.
The only way I see the comment of pre-loved doesn't count is if you are one of the houses... Cause for them it doesn't matter how many Chanel bags or Birkins you have if you didn't gave them your money 💸 on their database you don't have anything 😅 that's the problem of the "journey" that I'll never fall for 😂😂😂

I agree! However you acquire the luxury item…you now have a luxury item. And I’ve had “blah” to subpar experiences in boutiques and stores so while the experience can be a lovely bonus it’s not a necessity for me. Plus I enjoy giving new life to “old” things,. To each their own.
And YES there’s always room in the world to be kinder! 😁 ❤ It’s weird how in this space we need to push understanding/empathy for those buying preloved! 🫤 We see some version of snobbery in almost all kinds of hobby collecting. But in luxury handbags the Mean Girl vibes pop up too often. Is it in the classic classist way, or maybe just a snap-to-judgment in the modern ADHD world?
P.S. Seeing that jewel of a CF always makes me happy! I’ve been traveling & busy & got behind on videos; I’ll watch that last one next. Glad to hear you’re carefully considering before parting with it. 🤎

I guess the person who left that comment was fed up with how luxury brands have lost their exclusivity despite all the unreasonable price hikes. People from all walks of life can buy luxury items now thanks to these other avenues, that does admittedly take away from the exclusivity these brands claim to offer.

I think people just want a way to make themselves feel superior to others and honestly that says a lot about them and their self confidence. Buy what you want. From whoever you want. Long as it makes you happy.

I have bought pre love bags from niche sellers off instagram and felt like i've made a personal friend. My most luxurious experience was my vintage Chanel that I actually had to put on a payment plan lol. Unboxing that was like a dream. In louis vuitton I usually feel rushed. Chanel is usually a mad house. I had a decent experience in Gucci, not my local store, but this was in spain. It can be exciting getting something off fashionphile because you get to open it and see it for the first time. Butterflies when the package arrives. But yeah in store I had an amazing experience ad burbery in london. I never even would have bought a bag. But the SA was so nice and I just felt like it was such a special experience. I guess my take away is that I don't necessarily feel a luxury experience just because i'm in the shop.

I usually buy luxury bags new and am more open to buying preloved slgs or accessories that are slightly used. I don’t judge others for what they choose to do though. I would buy a preloved bag if I wanted something vintage or unavailable from the past like Chanel 24K hardware. The quality was so much better back then too. Mainly worry about authenticity and want to put my own dings in my bags 😂. I’m not a seller of my items so am selective on what I buy and is the reason I prefer new when possible. Buying preloved doesn’t equate to non-luxury though. No one else knows where you got it or how much you paid so to each their own 😊

You can believe that my authenticated preloved luxury is certainly considered luxury to me. And let’s be clear, many of us are paying many thousands for preloved. That does not mean it isn’t luxury because I didn’t buy it from the boutique.

  • @foodandlipstick

Yes, of course! It’s a Chanel bag (for example), whether you bought it in boutique or not. Let’s not forget that sometimes Pre-Loved items can be so much more expensive than new items. I have new and Pre-Loved items. And, as for the “boutique experience,” some experiences can be less than stellar.

With the current mass production of even the most expensive brands, when you buy new from the boutique what you are buying is not quality but simply the brand name. On the pre-loved market you can find bags with the qualities that made the brand luxury in the first place. The marketing departments want you to believe that you are buying heritage, legacy, and the qualities previously associated with the bags. In reality, they are selling you a dream. If you want the real object with its real qualities, you have to search for it. All the pampering and indulging in the boutique does not make the bag any better.

I find the attachment to the word "luxury" strange. On one hand, I get that their is a hierarchy of expensive handbags (or cars), but on the other hand, who cares. Buy what you like. There's some cases where quality is in fact different, but probably more few and far between than we'd care to admit. I just feel the label of luxury is kind of BS. A piece that is special to me, can be a luxury, but not to someone else. I also don't care about the boutique experience so that part is lost on me. I sound more curmudgeonly than I mean to. If we tossed label of luxury, could we simply say we have these things because we like them or find some joy, inspiration, or appreciation from them? Or are we attached to the idea of being part of club luxury.
