Unconventional Karate Tools for Training

  • We felt like there were tons of traditional hojo undo videos available online so we wanted to contribute some unconventional tools that we use to supplement our actual training. These were all created from everyday materials and hopefully can provide you with some new ideas to try out!
    Remember to always start with a lower weight and progressively get heavier with the equipment. Martial arts is a marathon, not a sprint!

    You guys are right on track. On Okinawa they use all kinds of improvised train tools. Like old tires for fingertip and knuckle toughening. Flipping old tractor tires for strength.

      +Strein86 Thanks! We always feel if it's easy enough to make then there's no point to shell out an excess amount of money on exercise equipment, glad you enjoyed it!

    As a Karateka and an avid fitness person, I incoporate hojo-undo training into my routine using modern workout equipment. Thanks for sharing the video.

    these are the same as the makiwara when it was invented. dont see things as "new", embrace anything thathelps in battle. whats old is new, and wisdom on new waza is crucial imho.

    Im thinking of joining a Shito Ryu Dojo in my area would these drills and concepts be applicable to that style as well?

    Great video. I like your use of the rubber tubing. I use old bike inner tubes for some exercises. I'll have to try that one you showed. I also love that throw bag. I'm looking forward to making one for myself.

    much underrated hojo undo: Bicycle Inner-tube :D
    much like your elastic band, but if you tie a loop at one end, you can put it on your feet to give your kicks resistance, hold it for punches, all sorts... and youre recycling your cycling stuff :D

    I like the bruce lee philosophy which say the aim of jeet kundo is simply to simplified .....if someone graps you punch him and he will let go..no point in trying to take someone down....involving so many moves....

      +James Holt Independently we've both trained in various martial arts since childhood (kung fu, judo, karate, brazilian jiu jitsu, muay thai, etc.). The past decade has been primarily karate and more recently we've focused on traditional Okinawan karate and have placed all of our energy into developing a method to rediscover it's functional roots. I believe we have decided upon Okinawan Karate, specifically Shorin-Ryu as our vehicle for change and here we are :) Thanks for the question and as always thank you for the support

      +2013maverick We have our roots in Kobayashi, specifically in the Shorinkan organization but we like to represent Okinawan karate as a whole, thanks!

      Years ago I was in the place, what I did was look for the better teacher. Anything can be a great martial art, but bad teacher? It'll never be great. Some people like a transferable martial art. Like I'd say karate is more holistic, more well rounded maybe. But good wing chun teacher? wa!! Maybe different 🙇

    What was the length of the resistance tube you used?

      40lb resistance weight and gofit brand although we are sure that any brand or weight should be sufficient. The loop was made to be a little smaller than the width of the shoulders so that the hands would have to work to push apart the loop. Hope that helps!
