The most underrated artist in pop music from the 1990's. The Haunted album should be considered immortal.
she was such an underrated artist... the first album is a masterpiece, so original, so many different styles and sounds. I have never gotten tired of listening to it. timeless stuff... even here in 2019.
I agree, every song is solid on that album
One must also be sure to sample Conjure One for more Poe at her finest.
when this song was a hit my friend and i would go nuts when the radio played it... this and morcheebas trigger hippie were awesome when they came on the radio
Listening at it for the first time right now, she sounds great!

I was like 19 watching this with my friends on MTV in 1995. Such awesome times. You kids in your teens and early 20s - enjoy it!
Lol me too. Seems like yesterday.
Puts you at about 47 lol, I too was 19 watching this in '95
I was 16, I remember this one!
One of my favorite memories is seeing Poe in SF. I can't even remember the theatre we were in, but she jumped off the stage onto me and my roommate. We were about to pass her along, but the people around were shy or something. We didn't want to drop her on the floor, so we just held her up high so everyone could see her. Weird, man.
😂😂😂
Lucky you... you got to hold Poe.
I just found out about her after reading House of Leaves. It's really cool that she and her brother reference each other's work across different forms of media.
Wait i know that book. I guess i missed that this song was related.
Funny... I found out about House of Leaves after being a Poe fan since the 90's. The best art comes from the maddest minds.
I've never even heard of it so I guess I found something new to check out. Cool
What is House of Leaves?
@@MariaAbrams Me either. Lolzx 🤣
This song just popped into my head after a decade.
Same here. I was at work when it happened. I remember writing it down to listen to it later.
+Milky Way Laniakea Superclusterite ^any old ho.. ^^
So I would agree with you in that it's powerful and sexy at the same time, and that it sounds good on the headphones/stereo. (while I can't presume to know the real meaning behind the song- supposedly there is some book "house of leaves" that the character Johnny comes from"...) I can describe the feeling I get from this song: It's feminine anger which in some ways is worse than masculine anger. It sounds like she's singing about how easy it is to manipulate a man. It's a real fun song to listen to, the 90's were great!
Wesley Mungal Good comment man.
I'm frightened at the thought. But curious enough... I fucken love this song. When Big Shiny Tunes the original came out I must've been too much a punk and skipped the chick tracks.
Now I'm wearing that whole CD out. Well I'm wearing out the computer chip processing bits. I lost my CDs so I downloaded the whole Big Shiny Collection. There's not a lot of rap on them thankfully.
The 90's *were* the shit in music. Wtf happened in only 15 years...
man i really miss the music from the 90's

I saw Poe perform in 1997. She was dressed almost exactly like she is in this video. I was 17 years old, so it really blew my mind. I assumed that she was an actual angel. Oh well.
I seen her that same year at the B.A.S.H in Utah.
I saw and met her same year on San Antonio. Nixons, Imperial Drag, and GooGoo Dolls were there too. She held my hand and sang this as a light rain fell.

This is a song about Revenge. Poe is portraying a ghost, where she and her lover, Johnny, committed a crime that went all wrong; Poe ended up getting shot, as Johnny fled and left her to die. Now Poe is trying to come back from hell, and blow Jonny away so she can be with him for the rest of their lives, in a twisted and psychotic kind of way. What an amazing song and I love Poe so much! 🖤
🖤🖤
Nah , you are wrong. She said it was about a girl that loved a guy but he was rich and wouldn't settle for her. Johnny later became Fred Durst and she realized how lucky she was for not banging him

This reminds me of an underground club we used to go to on Sunday nights. It was an alternative night and they used to play all this music. Before Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, we just focused on the moment and the memories. We all used to dress like that too. Those were great times.

a truly talented artist.... That should’ve been so much bigger (it’s a shame she got lost in the shuffle of that strange 90’s era)
She didn't get lost in the shuffle. She was on track to be 'so much bigger', but the Atlantic/Time Warner AOL merger of 2000 hosed her directly to her face. FEI and Atlantic had already done promo for Haunted and the album was climbing the charts. The merger ended up meaning labels and artists got dropped, and when FEI took the payoff from the merger, it decided that instead of continuing to suppourt Poe and her work, it would instead cut all marketing, distribution, and promotion of Haunted. Poe was under contract and had her hands tied from releasing new music until a long drawn-out court battle was completed, the culmination of which meant from that point forward, the contract was dissolved, but it left her owing hundreds of thousands of dollars to her lawyer. She's had to watch the rights to her Master recordings ping-pong from FEI to seven other companies over the last 20 years, eventually ending up at eOne/Hasbro, of all places. Because of financial burdens from the ongoing pandemic, Hasbro laid off thousands of employees and liquidated 10% of its Film and TV Division. eOne responded to the same circumstances in April of this year by selling its Music Division to the Blackstone Group. Poe still doesn't own the rights to her original music from her former Contract with Atlantic/FEI and has apparently only released 5 songs in the 20 years since the merger debacle.

I just bought this CD on eBay for a couple dollars. I’ve been replacing all the CDs I lost over the years for various reasons just because I can. Feels good to get them back even though I don’t even have a CD player in my car these days.
Classic rock, gangster rap and funk were what I listened to primarily. I heard POE when I was 14 and I borrowed it from my sister. Fingertips and dolphin caught my ear. Since then I’ve always enjoyed POE.
The song still resonates doesn't it? Twenty three years on and it still sounds fresh. Too bad she got crushed by the power brokers of the industry. Once an artist is broken it's like fine china; never the same again. The purity of expression is lost forever. The only saving grace, I suppose, is there must be a special place in hell for those doing the breaking. So it goes.

Her Brother is an awesome writer, and alot of her songs are inspired by his books. Check him out if you think that would be of interest :)
All they do is destroy. The want one-ness. It is the only reason for the bs diversity in USA. Also in many other white countries. Those running white countries (and most others I'd assume) are pure evil. False togetherness or false individuality. Take your pick. Because they can't stand not controlling you either way. They don't mind "diverse" outside so long as inside is the same, or at least won't be issue.

I just finished reading House of Leaves, and I'm so glad she decided to make this album in companion to the book. It really gives off the uncomfortable, bizarre mood the book does. Brilliantly done.
The album that pairs with the book is called, "Haunted", but this album "Hello" (her debut) is really good too. Sorry to respond to a comment almost a year old haha. House of Leaves is an incredible book.
I used to walk across town at 17 to get weed and walk back and hear this song on the radio good times

Just one of the many enchanting melodies that came piping through the college radio station and into my life during those halcyon days known as the '90s. Can I get a decade do-over?
Poe should have been more famous. She had a number of great, edgy songs.

It's like she's singing the direct premise of "Kill Bill" some 8 years prior. Haven't heard this since it was on the radio new
As good as I remember. Maybe even better. And it's been ages since I last heard it. A gorgeous woman sings a song with nasty lyrics over a smooth beat, and is wholly herself.

So many great memories of the 90's! Poe was amazing!
This is such a fantastic song and a fantastic voice. This video did not do Poe justice at all. Granted it was nearly a decade ago but they should have made the effort the accommodate and help honor Poe's talent. She is very talented, the industry should honor that in artist's and help to highlight that or bring it out, not scale it down to anything less than her fantastic voice. Strong women like Poe need strong representatives to help elevate their career. The potential is seen and there but it's a shame when it's not recognized or treated as such in all the ways that could really make a star shine. Great song Poe, great voice, Thank you.
