LEICA Landscape Photography on the Hampshire Coast | POV

- I like to keep things as simple as possible when shooting landscapes. No tripods, no preconceived ideas about a location, and no getting up at the crack of dawn!!
This video was shot over an afternoon and shows what I look for in a landscape photograph and how I like to interpret it. The location was Milford-On-Sea in Hampshire. I used a Leica camera and one lens to get my photographs, and these are the best ten shots. At the end of the video, I take a closer look at my two favourite pictures from the afternoon.

Love your work and agreement with the sentiment. I like how you explain each photo and break down the composition. I far prefer to walk around and capture images which on the face of it don't look like much - but try to make them interesting. I have an M11 Monochrome and a Q2M. My wife thinks I'm crazy for not taking colour photos but I take them just for me.

The third one is a lovely image, great composition and boat replacement with a shoe. My second favorite being the first one, playing with the boat emerging from the ground.

Hi Jeff, Love the channel and hope it becomes a success, i first came across you when you done a video on your wedding photography with the Leica's a while ago and then when you did a Canon special with dear old Don McCullin, two of England's finest photographers as far apart as genres go, I wondered if any of the darkness rubbed off Don onto you as far as the landscapes are concerned it certainly did with me I just love his work in the landscape. Anyway getting back this video I love the way you apply the documentary style in the same way you did in your weddings, the tones are just right up my street. Also the light, grittiness and textures, is this in part of what they say the Leica look, I can't imagine you doing a lot of post processing as the images just look natural with a slight darkening of the corners to keep your attention where it maters on the subject. I look forward to more video's from you keep up the good work.

I grew up with McCullin’s work as a young teenager (although I wasn’t into photography then) due to my love of the band Killing Joke. When I went to college in 1988 that was when I was introduced properly to his images from the north of England and his Somerset landscapes. That work resonated with me. So you can imagine my excitement when I was invited to go to France to spend a week with him, teaching him digital photography. Yes, undoubtably he has been a huge influence on how I interpret a scene (although Don likes his images really dark!!)
Great video showing that you can break the stereotypes of genres. I use M9s (not for my landscape photography)and have 1 body that has a 21mm permanently attached. I love the gritty B&W reminds me of the old greats. I'm inspired to go try some similar styled shooting but I'm not close to a beach so it might be urban landscapes.
With you very much on getting up at daft o'clock and tripods, yes I have two and use them every now and again.
Sometimes I wish I could explain what I shoot just like you did. Anyway, new to your channel and really enjoying your photography. Walking around with a camera and looking for subjects is so much more fun than planning everything.

This is a really old video. I found Lav mics to be pretty noisy and they don’t have a huge about of DR. 🙂

Awesome selection of images. I shoot people all day at work, on my down down I enjoy an early start somewhere in the sticks. Over the last few years post the bug thing, I'm increasingly aware how much the people pictures are more important to me, a hill is a hill it doesn't often change other than different lighting situations and the odd quake, but people change fashions, expressions emotions locations interactions they all change constantly. I'm a pretty solitary sort of bloke I enjoy my own company I like to work alone. I've been shooting street and documentary pretty much all of my life, I never tire of photography never have any mental blocks I'm just obsessed with photography. 6 days ago I bought my first Leica a Q2, don't ask me why but since then I can hardly sleep I'm learning the camera, I'm scouring the events calendars months in advance, I'm looking for protests, busy streets, quiet streets, i'm fizzing, it feels like I'm running out of time and I've got to crack on. Crazy I know it sounds stupid a camera is a camera right I've shot loads loved all of them, made decent imho photos with them, won a few media industry gongs blah blah, but this thing......is this what a insanity feels like, the Leica look? the look of a lunatic. Right gotta go walkabout....top work lovely video cheers xxx

Very nice work! I do wonder, though, if you really see the world in such dark and foreboding ways? Serious question as your dramatic images are consistent in that viewpoint.
When I was a young photographer in the late 1980s, I was introduced to the landscape work of Don McCullin. His aesthetic resonated with me. The UK weather also lends itself to this style of interpretation.
Fantastic snaps! Does it hurt the camera at all taking it along the coast like that with the ocean air?
Thank you. The cameras are well sealed. The only precautions we take are to avoid changing lenses too close to the edge of the sea and to always use a protective filter on the end of the lens.
it’s funny. I use an M9P with a 50. Although in my case I do documentary landscape on a project basis. Same principle of a single lens. I found your 21mm images fascinating. Congrats

Are these color photos that are converted into B&W or did you have the sensor converted? If it’s processing I’d love a video on your approach because these are fantastic.
Thank you. These are converted to b/w from colour files. I mainly use these profiles to do the conversion. jeffascough.com/lightroom-presets

How did you expose for the shot of the boulder? it looks amazing
Standard automatic metering on the M9 but I always dial in -1/3 under exposure to protect the highlights.

To me, the third image is my favorite, because in french language, this shoe is called " chaussure bateau", if we can translate it in English, it is boat shoe, so you can make a sense with the scene. Cheers from France.
The shoe was left on the post. Presumably because it was found on the beach. I saw the shape and, as you said, it made sense with the boats. 🙂
