I've never thought about the dual or tri-tone landscapes thing. Now I'm going to have a different outlook on it. Thank for you explaining this! Can always learn something new
Landscape and Leica M is definitely an underrated combo. Most Leica M conversations revolve around street, travel, and portraits, but the compact form factor, glass, and resolution are great for landscape. Love the simple techniques you outlined, and your landscape shots are gorgeous. More content like this would be awesome. I shoot Sony but one of these days I hope to incorporate some Leica gear into my kit.
Great video . I’m in the bay as well. I’m at San Jose Camera. Found you because I just got hooked on Leica. I’m an older photographer, been in the portrait business in NY. You’ve opened up my eyes to great look. You are amazing. If near the store come by and say hello. Rudy Pollak
I agree with your point about the 135 for landscapes and it led me to purchase a 135 Tele-Elmar for an incredible $270. Incredibly sharp and fast enough at f4. A much easier carry for long hikes. I don’t know why so many folks are afraid of using longer glass on Ms.
I need to get a 135 for my M. I rented the APO 135 a few months ago and was unimpressed. Even at f8 nearly every shot was soft. Maybe it was a bad lens?
When I migrated from Nikon to Leica one of the items I hated to depart with was the AIS 135 f2.8. That was a great lens but I like my Leica equally. Can’t say anything about the lens you tried but have to think something was wrong with it. I did have a CLA done by DAG after I got mine simply because of the age.
A 35mm and a 90mm were not the lens combo I was expecting you to say, but the results really speak for themselves. There is some great advice in here and the examples prove what you are saying.
I’m rocking a 40 and 90 m-rokkor set with my Minolta CLE, and it’s great to have such a tiny, capable setup. I also got a Konica 28/2.8, but it’s much denser, so one day I’d love to find a Minolta 28mm without the white spots…
Amazing video Dave. So inspiring. Your tips are so useful . Glad I found a real photographer who believes that Leica M system is not only for street photography. 😊
Thanks Bob. This is my primary photography style, and has been for many years. My website is full of landscape galleries. I love making images like this!
Great photos! Very natural looking colors, makes you feel like you can reach out and touch the scene. I shoot most of my landscapes with my Leica as well.
Amazing video mate, I can't remember when is the last time I saw such a breathtaking set of landscape photography that makes me pause and admire the composition and subject so much, and doesnt stick to the wide angle long exp over edit cliche 🖤
90mm is a super underrated focal length on Leica. I got the 90mm f2.4 Summarit a couple years ago and it absolutely blew me away. Super fun to punch in on a subject and get some good depth and separation from the rest of the scene
I´m considereing more landscaping photographer too, and when i starting to doing with the leica cameras are gorgeous, so unique experience and the feelings that you have is superior, thanks for this video my friend :)
Dave I commend you not only on the great photographs but your precise editing as well. It’s so easy to over edit but you did just enough and the consistency in which you did this was very well done. Subscribed
I bought my M11 mainly to do landscapes/travel and to have the 90mm f4 Elmar (which I haven’t yet been able to afford) plus a wider lens as a two lens combo. I’m not sure whether 28mm or 35mm is the better wide angle lens. In the meantime I bought a 50mm Summicron to make it easier to stitch together panorama pics as a 50mm is likely to have less distortion at the edges than wider lenses.
@@davidherring I live in the wilderness of Oklahoma and all I shoot are landscapes with the Leica M. The photos are mesmerizing on my computer. I will now take the M to Italy instead of my film camera for photography, X-Rays are a bummer...!
Great video and photos. I make a lot of landscape photos with telephoto lenses. Of course, this really depends on the location but longer lenses can be very effective tools for landscape photography.
These are unbelievable landscapes. Typically i have very little interest in landscapes as it seems they don't capture the feeling of being in these amazing spots...but these are doing something different. Tremendous work and very inspiring. Thanks
Lovely images! By the way, Oscar Barnack originally created the Leica for landscapes ie hikes and holidays. My Ms are my fav landscape kit as well. I became wiser, left all the heavy stuff at home. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Leica M isn’t just street photography for sure. You would love the APO-M Telyt 135mm. Great compression. Also still works with the rangefinder with the newer models.
I rented that lens and every photo I did (focused at infinity) was soft and looked awful. Told Lensrental and they checked and said it was fine. To their credit, they refunded my rental, but I was really disappointed in that lens. Maybe it was a bad copy.
Oh man. Perfect timing. I'm heading to Montana this summer, and I'll be on 35+90 and my Leica (and Jupiter 135/3.5 cause why not?). I usually shoot street, so these straight forward tips will definitely give me some direction when I'm having trouble seeing a shot. Great video! Consistently solid content, even more than before.
This was really inspirational. I have an M6 and M10 that I almost never take with me for landscape photography. I always think of them as better suited for more small-scale photography (portraits, street, etc). But this has me excited to take them on my next road trip. I also noticed you have a uv on your lens. No concerns about image degradation? Most of all, thanks!
You definitely should take them with you and try some landscapes. Here's the thing about UV... if shoot with it on/off and looked for any degradation, I could probably find it. But I also am jumping in/out of my car, driving with the strap around my body and the camera on my belly so I can jump out easily if I see something I like, and sometimes put the M11 in the cup holder on a roadtrip. The UV is worth protecting my Summilux lenses, even if I take a bit of a quality hit. All the photos in every gallery I have (including this video) had a UV filter on. I think they're just fine. Hope this helps!
@@davidherring Thanks for the reply! I use a UV - they make a great substitute for a lens cap on a rangefinder to avoid forgetting you have an actual lens cap on - but always wondered if I was losing a little something IQ-wise. But your shots tell me to stop worrying. Again, thanks for the reply!
Don't take my advice... I just hope for the best! I carry it inside my jacket often, or in a bag, and only pull it out for the photo and wipe it off and put it back in. If it's raining or snowing too hard, I just don't do it. But that's only happened once when I was out taking photos, and it was in the Hoh Rainforest, ironically.
Do you have any filters you'd recommend or that you use, UV or CPL for the lenses you're carrying and the landscapes you're shooting? Can't for the life of me find a E39 that works!
Honestly I mostly just use Zeiss T* UV filters on my Leica lenses. For landscapes, I don't use any CPL or ND filters, but for some things I use a B+W 3-stop ND so I can shoot wide open with the mechanical shutter. This would be for bright sunny portraits, street, or other things (not landscapes).
Love your content brother just bought your presets I shot canon and Fuji but recently I went to local Leica store and took an M11 for a test run can’t decide between an M10R or M11 I watch all your videos hope I come up with a decision fast 😂
Thanks for the comment! I loved my M10R but now that I have moved over to an M11, I honestly only miss a few small components of it. The M11 is an incredible camera and if you can swing it, I think you'll be happier in the long run. My two cents!
@@davidherring thanks brother think ima have to swing the m11 route 😂😂 won’t lie after using it I did fall in love with it and the whole experience of using it think my Fuji opened the doors for me getting into the Leica ecosystem and your videos pushed me thru the threshold 😂

Mostly handheld. I rarely use a tripod, and if I did, it was because it was very much blue-hour and the shutter was too low to make it happen handheld.
If 35 mm is not enough, simply take 3 pictures in portrait format next to each other and join them later. This will give you a wider angle of view. You can then crop the resulting panorama as you wish, as it has a very high resolution anyway.
I know this is common in landscape photography, I've just never felt like 35mm isn't enough (except in rare cases where, given the planning I had done, I brought the lens I'd want to use).
As far as I know, Sony is the only producer of the 61mp sensor that is in both the Leica M11 & Sony A7RV. However, the sensor is just hardware. The tech that makes the sensor data applicable is vastly different between the brands.
