I really commend Joe for openly admitting that the sport he spent years mastering is incomplete and flawed when it comes to a real all out fight. Honestly shocked me he was so open regarding that. Good on joe. Alot of guys when they have dedicated their lives to a sport they will not under any circumstances allow anyone to discredit it and even stretch the truth to make sure that the sport they do is ultimately the best even if it's not. Just look at Steven segal. Everyone knows in a real fight, the discipline he's trained in he basically comes across like he could beat anyone up anywhere in the world and shuts down anyone that says otherwise. But I'm glad joe isn't like that and says it like it is. Big respect

So true. My first school taught me how to combo with hands, but not as far as intricate as boxing. TKD is probably the heaviest kick martial art out there, so it's missing upper body striking and most importantly, a lot of grappling. Some schools teach grappling, but it's very limited certain to escape techniques, arm bars, choking, and pinning.
I will not lie though, I believe TKD is underutilized in MMA. I see so many situations in sparring/matches that call for a certain kick, but the fighter isn't comfortable enough to pull it off. Being able to instantly transition from a "Muay Thai" stance to the 70/30 backstance to pull off stronger kicks is game changing for strikers.

Same I did kickboxing/boxing and never respected karate or at least shotokan karate or taekwondo, but later in life I learned the benefits of chambering up kicks, and spent some time with some taekwondo guys who incorporated it into their kickboxing,
My kicks improved so much, I was always like spam front kicks, spam roundhouse, I never had confidence in hook kicks or spinning kicks but now man
It's like they opened up a whole world of new tools for me to use
Yea incomplete style but they're good at what they do

I wish Joe would put together a high-quality video of ALL his kicking techniques. I've seen the footage that everyone else has, but it would nice with proper camera work and lighting, and him not having to wipe the sweat off the floor every minute. When a guy like GSP says Joe's spinning back kick is the best he's ever seen, that's a serious statement and compliment. He's a great teacher, so it would make for an excellent reference and contribution to martial arts. And for those who don't know, they'd be amazed.

You rarely see someone getting kicked in a street fight, especially with long powerful kicks..., most of the time there is not enough space and time. Most of the fights start when someone pushes you or punches you and you punch back or grab a hold of him, and the fights get broken up quick too, its rarely the case that you square off with someone in a large space where you have the time to move around and throw kicks

@Mma 101 ya idk what happened man......I find the same thing with a lot of traditional martial arts. I'm wondering if it's just hard to get good at taekwondo? Compared to something like boxing where it's just punches? Also It's not just kicking there's lots of punches, knuckle punches even. Almost every traditional striking martial art is basically kickboxing with different patterns. Yes there is mostly kicks but there are punches aswell and if you're a boxer you're going to have really good punches. It's kinda hard to explain because peoples idea of taekwondo is so fucked now, yes there's spinning head kicks and using lots of kicks but you can box an entire round and throw a crescent kick and thats still considered taekwondo. If I went a whole round without kicking I could technically still call that taekwondo if there's tkd blocks.

I know of some very popular & successful commentators of soccer, who didn’t really compete in the game. They weren’t soccer players in their national teams. They didn’t even compete in the local league.

Going to what they said about Tony Romo announcing football - that dude is one of the best play-by-play guys out there. He has a great personality, very likeable, extremely knowledgeable and can articulate it to make the average fan understands how it works and why they do what they do. I really like Tony. The irony is, I didn't care about Tony as a player, but admire him now as an announcer, whereas guys like Dan Fouts I loved as a player but don't like as announcers.

I fought Tae Kwon Do during my early twenties too. Was very active and progress was great for like 1 year or so. Then ruined my back after some throws. Ischas stuff that really mess u up. So was out for years, then started some karate years later. Ruined my back again but not the real bad stuff and was out for weeks, so thought about getting back to training. However getting more and more scared of ruining my back during the 30s i quit. I didnt fukkin care about pain, but when being put out for weeks its hard to get back and when it happens again and again its kinda like I dont wanna do it anymore and then you kinda start doing less violent stuff like swimming in a pool LOL. Now im probably not going back to MA because my back is really not built for it

(PLEASE ANSWER)I have a question, I want to start practicing a combat sport to be more confident in a confrontation situation and be able to defend myself
-So I searched up some gyms and these two are close to my house ,but
    - One is on it Judo and they make good competitors and other gym is an mma gym with striking lessons, BJJ ,wrestling,Muay Thai
-And I want to know if I should go to the Judo gym and master Judo or
-Go to the mixed gym so I can also learn some striking that I may need in self defense or fight ??

    • @2caiden4u

I would go to the mma gym first. Learn how to fight, then maybe later down the line learn some judo throws and incorporate them
