you're an honest man Joe...your description of TKD being incomplete is so true...and that's exactly why Bruce Lee went his own direction to incorporate the best of all disciplines...would be awesome if he could see MMA today
So true. My first school taught me how to combo with hands, but not as far as intricate as boxing. TKD is probably the heaviest kick martial art out there, so it's missing upper body striking and most importantly, a lot of grappling. Some schools teach grappling, but it's very limited certain to escape techniques, arm bars, choking, and pinning. I will not lie though, I believe TKD is underutilized in MMA. I see so many situations in sparring/matches that call for a certain kick, but the fighter isn't comfortable enough to pull it off. Being able to instantly transition from a "Muay Thai" stance to the 70/30 backstance to pull off stronger kicks is game changing for strikers.
Same I did kickboxing/boxing and never respected karate or at least shotokan karate or taekwondo, but later in life I learned the benefits of chambering up kicks, and spent some time with some taekwondo guys who incorporated it into their kickboxing, My kicks improved so much, I was always like spam front kicks, spam roundhouse, I never had confidence in hook kicks or spinning kicks but now man It's like they opened up a whole world of new tools for me to use Yea incomplete style but they're good at what they do
I wish Joe would put together a high-quality video of ALL his kicking techniques. I've seen the footage that everyone else has, but it would nice with proper camera work and lighting, and him not having to wipe the sweat off the floor every minute. When a guy like GSP says Joe's spinning back kick is the best he's ever seen, that's a serious statement and compliment. He's a great teacher, so it would make for an excellent reference and contribution to martial arts. And for those who don't know, they'd be amazed.
Take a look at Michael Jai White light sparring uria hall, I haven't seen anyone as confident with their kicks as this guy, opens up a whole new world for ya
You rarely see someone getting kicked in a street fight, especially with long powerful kicks..., most of the time there is not enough space and time. Most of the fights start when someone pushes you or punches you and you punch back or grab a hold of him, and the fights get broken up quick too, its rarely the case that you square off with someone in a large space where you have the time to move around and throw kicks

@Mma 101 ya idk what happened man......I find the same thing with a lot of traditional martial arts. I'm wondering if it's just hard to get good at taekwondo? Compared to something like boxing where it's just punches? Also It's not just kicking there's lots of punches, knuckle punches even. Almost every traditional striking martial art is basically kickboxing with different patterns. Yes there is mostly kicks but there are punches aswell and if you're a boxer you're going to have really good punches. It's kinda hard to explain because peoples idea of taekwondo is so fucked now, yes there's spinning head kicks and using lots of kicks but you can box an entire round and throw a crescent kick and thats still considered taekwondo. If I went a whole round without kicking I could technically still call that taekwondo if there's tkd blocks.
Martial arts such as Taekwondo have martial arts that are "Related" to each other. In Taekwondo, Hapkido is taught in many clubs to teach clinch moves. Its the same thing with Karate and Aikido or Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, they are connected both in history and concept.
