  • Prosthetics called bionics are being engineered to look, move, and feel more like real limbs. But how are they made and how do they work? We explore these questions and more.

    I think the real furture of proshetics is not mechanical limbs, but artificial grown ones from the persons own cells (so the body doesn't reject it).

    • @seaoc6578
      @seaoc6578 8 месяцев назад +2

      Yes and no. Bionic ones are much closer, as we can't fully replicate cell growth to the level needed to make that. Plus, the problem with skin is its truly not that great. It serves its purpose but something like carbon fiber is both more durable and lighter than that of an average arm. We just need to connect it to nerve endings and it'll function just like a normal limb

      Actually working on that with subdermal chips, tiny, that can link to the legs with tiny wires, perhaps Bluetooth in the future. Also may be able to use chips to repair Alzheimers.

      In general, an engineering degree is needed for this kind of research, but there are other disciples that are part of the boarder field. Depending on what you want to do with bionics, you can have a mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or robotics engineering degree. But collaboration can cross boundaries to the medical side with prosthetist-scientists, physician-scientists, and surgeons. The field is also rapidly expanding into artificial intelligence.

    Is sounds messed up but growing human bodies with no brain (so there’s no conscious) then using the parts is the most realistic approach I can think of. Then somehow altering our cells to accept the limbs.

      If you're in the US, there are some companies, some of the more advanced ones can have tiny chips under the skin, connected to sensors in the limb that give your nerves immediate feed back.

    • @krknfmkr8919
      @krknfmkr8919 Год назад +1

      My sympathies, I only lost one. Mine will have a microprocessor that "learns" my stride. It has pressure sensors that give the ankle and knee joints feedback. I can't get it until the swelling goes down, above knee amputation. 2-3 months
