I learnt more from this great 20 minute video than I have over the 5 years since I became a below knee amputee. If only I'd been taught that this is how to walk correctly in a prosthetic. Maybe my gait wouldn't be so bad now! Been practicing today whilst out and about here in England.
I received a C leg over a year ago, I live in a rural community and there are no PT"s who have any experience with a C leg. I gain more from your videos then I have with anyone else. Teach to walk as an amputee and seeing that it is all from the basics is very helpful. I feel I was lead to believe that this microprocessor knee would be life changing. It has not been so and in many ways I have been disappointed. But time to move on and appreciate what I have. Thank you. Practice, practice, practice. .
From one PT Amputation Care specialist to another: Great work! Very few understand the importance of initiating swing via the pelvis. Extremely refreshing to see, and will certainly help clinicians and patients avoid some of the common pitfalls which preclude symmetrical gait. Bravo!
These videos helped me a lot. Can you believe that I lost my leg in ‘87 when I was in my late 30s? And this is the first time that I get to learn the right way of doing things. Very good video for a novice like myself but I have to admit I was a little discouraged with how slowly it started. Hey there. We are not a provider of prosthetic limbs or components. Our focus is solely in education and research for people with walking disabilities.
How long should each phase be practiced and how do I stop limping? I am fairly comfortable with walking without my cane or walker around my apt but still have a significant limp. my glute muscles are strong according to my Prosthetist but my balance sucks. I'd love to walk smoothly and can't help but wonder if balance plays a role in that. I can't stand on that one leg with my good leg lifted up unless I'm holding onto something and putting weight on that arm when I lift my good leg.
great video, I’m a bk and have started tripping when I walk, any clues why this just started happening? Sneaker is fine inside and prosthetic is not broken or anything… thank you
It is hard to say without proper evaluation. We suggest following up with your local prosthetist in the area to see whether the socket is properly suspended from your limb.

I had my below the amputation 2 months ago and I’m almost all healed up now and was wondering how long is it usually for someone to actually start using a prosthetic leg. Thanks.
The recovery process is highly variable, depending on healing, secondary conditions, current health status, and much more. People who have had below knee amputations and take well to a prosthetic leg (tolerate pressure, healthy skin) do begin using it fairly quickly. This timeline is depend on when you acquire a prosthetic and how well you are healing. Confidence in walking is another thing altogether which can often come 6 months to a year following the start of rehabilitation. Again everybody is different, but the important thing is that it is a process that can be done! Glad to see you have found our video. Make sure to check out our full prosthetic training series as there are some exercises you can be doing now.
Thanks for the comment. I looked at your walking videos and it looks like you have a mechanical knee, like an Ossur Total Knee. (Great job by the way! It is SO difficult!) This is a common way that walking is taught on this device because "kicking" the leg results in a solid lock-out of the prosthetic knee. It makes it safer, but requires a lot more energy input, making you less efficient in walking speed or endurance. The prosthetic knee shown is this video is the Ottobock C-Leg 4, but the approach to walking is the same as for someone with a mechanical knee. The technique presented here works for all levels of lower limb amputees, but needs to be approached with caution as it takes time to master. We will be adding an additional video that shows this technique with different prosthetic components soon. Be sure to subscribe to our channel to see it when it comes out! Hope this is helpful.
@@MissionGait yes already subscribed. I have kind of given up on walking but I do need to get back at it. The knee feels loose sometimes and when I climb up on a step it feels like it’s going to buckle. I need to get back to my prosthetic guy and see if he’ll tighten it up a little
@@ginasottile9747 Check out this video and make sure your technique is correct: ruclips.net/video/VvnTpQPeFpc/видео.html Otherwise, definitely get in touch with your prosthetist! We really recommend that they be on your speed-dial. They serve as your mechanic and can help you figure out any problems you may be having.

Doctors tend to not think people approaching 60 and up are not going to do anything but sitting in a wheelchair...so the analogy 8 to 80...isn't what I have found to be in this world today.
It is unfortunate that there is that bias in the medical community. We aim to never make those assumptions as we are always inspired by the hard work of people learning how to walk once again!

Hi I am a double amputee right below knee and left above knee, I don't have a problem with walking with my below knee prosthetic leg my struggle is with my above knee prosthetic leg as the knee joint is so loose and it's easy to fall. I want a video for a kind of person I am to learn more I'm in South Africa.
I needed this bit i can say its first time reality actually is hitting me. With tears also.lol baby i know but i cant wait til i finally start im like 5 6 months out from above the knee amputee i gotta find docs yet also. Its so much just i feel very mentally like lost latley ughh like were to even start
It is a lot. We always recommend getting connected with others going through the same thing. If you haven't heard of them before, we highly recommend connecting with the Amputee Coalition: www.amputee-coalition.org/new-amputee-limb-loss-limb-difference/
I know how you feel. I had my right leg amputated below the knee 2 months ago and before I went in for surgery I didn’t even want to watch videos or even think about it. Now that I had it done and talking to docs and watching videos and talking to a couple other amputees I feel good and relieved this part is over. Good luck man!
Is there a similar video for below knee amputees or are the principles sound enough to be true for above and below knee?
Thank you for your video.
Excellent
Very nice video Sir👌
Hello...tanu shree
I want to know about the detailed type of knee that Tracy are using
Funny story,
I’m a above the knee, and still on a temp prosthetic leg.
For some reason, (probably bc I walk w two canes alot.) I have the hardest time swinging my arms opposite of my strides!!
Hi, I hope you are having a great day! I am Woody, an Industrial Design student from Pratt Institution. I am currently working on an electric prosthesis for transfemoral amputees to do certain sports. It would be really helpful if I could talk to you and ask some questions. My email is in bio.
Great video
le agradezco por excelente explicación, tengo 52 años y uso prótesis con liner de un anillo y con rodilla 3r92, fíjese que al caminar un poco, siento el peso de la prótesis y me canso rápido. le agradecería su consejo, bendiciones.
Very good video for a novice like myself but I have to admit I was a little discouraged with how slowly it started. I typically don’t like a whole ton of pre-talk before I try it once establish somewhat of a baseline and then we can get into some corrections, instructions and some more pre-talk at that time.
This is great feedback, thank you! This series does balance a line between instructing physical therapists and lower limb amputees. This video leans a little more to the theory and physical therapy side so I definitely see your point. Thanks for the comment!
David. How long after receiving my AkA leg. Should I be walking without any aids like a cane or walker. I seem to lean to the right on my good leg why
Up till now I don't know how to use mine, I'm finding it difficult to walk normal😢 again
Same here
Jennifer, we recommend starting at the first episode in this series!
I need help they just gave me a leg and kicked me out no training as an aka
Hi, thanks for contacting us.
Since you are seeking clinical guidance, please email admin@missiongait.org. Please note that we do not treat patients and/or sell any products.
What would you recommend if a patient has a transfemoral prosthesis but that has a manual lever to go from sitting to standing. She wants to return to ambulation (uses a walker) but this seems rather difficult with a stiff knee. 4 years out of her amputation.
I need prosthetic like this for I want to back may job
any advise for hip disartation?
I need a video of the beginners
I am from the philippines and 1year on my prosthesis BKA,left and i want to run again but i have knee pain on my amputated lower limb, can you help me i cant take pain reliever due to my slightly elevated creatinine and i am diabetic for 19years,thank you
I love will love to learn still trying
Awesome! So helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
I like that prosthetic where i can get it. I am here at the Philippines do you have any branch here? Or where i can contact you? I hope you’ll notice my comment.
Hey there. We are not a provider of prosthetic limbs or components. Our focus is solely in education and research for people with walking disabilities.
Hi Lisa, many greetings from Germany, could be nice to hear from you
Great video👍
Thanks 👍
I’d want a rolling chassis like the classic Lost in Space Robot 🤪
How long should each phase be practiced and how do I stop limping?
I am fairly comfortable with walking without my cane or walker around my apt but still have a significant limp. my glute muscles are strong according to my Prosthetist but my balance sucks. I'd love to walk smoothly and can't help but wonder if balance plays a role in that. I can't stand on that one leg with my good leg lifted up unless I'm holding onto something and putting weight on that arm when I lift my good leg.
im also above the knee amputee sir and what it should be my prosthesis is higher than my original leg and im having a hard time to walk it
But what do you know I mean what do you saying about mechanic but is that is that something new
I lost both my legsfrom the knee down last year and and any advised for me
How can i get this leg from your center my leg is amputated from above the knee right leg
We do not sell prosthetics at our facility! We recommend you talk to your local physician.
Can you tell me where can i buy this leg?
Is the step is the same for all lower limb amputee cases???
Hello, the information in this video can be applied universally to amputees!
bu proteze mən necə sahib ola bilərəm. qiymeti neceyedir
great video, I’m a bk and have started tripping when I walk, any clues why this just started happening? Sneaker is fine inside and prosthetic is not broken or anything… thank you
It is hard to say without proper evaluation. We suggest following up with your local prosthetist in the area to see whether the socket is properly suspended from your limb.

Hello. We are solely focused on education in walking rehabilitation. We do not provide prosthetic limbs.
I am in the process of learning how to walk, i have a problem of putting all my weight on the prosthetic 🦿 please how will I go with that
Thank you for this video. I am a 20 year old aka for the past 10 years. Now I realise that all these years I walked with my centre of mass a little towards my sound leg. Can I now able to change that and walk with a perfect smooth gait?
You are most welcome. Most people walk like that following an amputation, so you are not alone. With practice, this is something that you can improve.
@@MissionGait Thank you for your reply. Can I get personal guide from mission gait through online?
Unfortunately we are not able to provide direct instruction. Our videos are certainly available to you and you can also share them with a local clinician that could help you meet your goals.

I'm watching this just incase my leg go boom
How much is the price?
Hello. We are solely focused on education in walking rehabilitation. We do not provide prosthetic limbs so we cannot detail any costs.
What kind of prosthetic is that? And my prosthetic guy taught me to kick my leg out so I need to learn all over again
They serve as your mechanic and can help you figure out any problems you may be having.
is it should be higher or lower than my original feet
Hi im 15 and really find walking on a c leg very hard and frustrating
Don't give up! It is an extremely long and frustrating process that takes much longer than it feels like it should. If you haven't gotten connected before, check out some resources like Cosi Talks ( cositalks.com ) or the Amputee Coalition ( www.amputee-coalition.org ). They are great resources particularly when you are in the middle of frustrating times. Also, you can check out our entire series on prosthetic training too ( ruclips.net/p/PLSF3akWhiajETHoRj1O7k6nHg8M7VanjQ ).

@@whichwei852 hi ; thank you for responding. I however dont think Id be a good candidate for your invention because I dont play sports. I will however answer any questions you have.
@@MissionGait good reply, thanks.
