  • We'll run through the basic components of a suction-based, below-knee, prosthetic leg and how they work. This should lay the foundation to dive deeper into each component, different types of feet and suspension systems, an how to get the most out of a prosthetic leg.
    We'll get more specific on feet in the future, but if your'e curious about the feet in the video, here are some links:

    I'm not an amputee, but I'm writing a story where the character is, and I despise having misinfo in my writing. I want to best represent the life they'd go through, so thank you for educating me on how to put on a leg :)

Or "shes supposed to be bulked up but what kind of exercises she can or can't do?" Or even "how much does a prosthetic cost? What types and how many prosthetics is she able to afford?"
      Seriously, today i made so much research about prosthetics and boots to see what kind would be more comfortable for her body and budget. It's crazy the things we do for character writing

    Great video. I’m a bilateral BKA of almost 8 years. I use liner liners too. Your socks are the shortest I’ve ever seen, but we are all different, what ever works. My liners are custom and very thick and I noticed your liner was quite thin. I also use a suspension sleeve and not the pin system, which never worked well for me. Good luck on your journey.

    I had a school mate who have to apply prosthetic leg in secondary school. We shared the same school bus. The weather of Thailand, my homeland, is really hot and humid. So he needed to aerate his leg frequently. I had seen a lot of mediums that he applied and I would like to ask him a lot about it, not in the mean way but because I was really care of him. However, I was afraid to make him upset for this. I'm never a good speaker. Your video explains me prosthetic leg and its accessories very well. Now, I'm working for a museum and wish to bring it more accessible for everyone. Thus, I want to comprehend special needs of each target audience. Thanks so much for this video.

    One of the main characters in the book I'm working on at the moment is a below-knee amputee. I'm not an amputee, nor do I know any amputees, much less specifically below-knee ones, so I've mostly had to rely on the internet for my research and find your videos extremely informative and helpful. I realise all amputees face different challenges and have different needs, but I feel like your videos really help me gain a fuller picture of it all. With my limited knowledge, I'm interested in learning as much as I can - equipment care, mobility issues, emotional impact, correct terminology, etc. I really love this character and want to do him justice and your videos have helped me immensely, thank you!

    Something current. Yay. My BKA was Sept 21, after 13 months of MRSA in my foot and two transmetatarsal amputations that got reinfected. Neuropathy has made it all fairly easy with the pain. I'm walking on an iWalk2.0 right now. First appointment with prostethistist is in a couple weeks. I've been seeing posts, ratchets, and suction sockets. Hoping they'll help me choose the best for my needs. I'll keep checking back. Thanks for the details.

    I would like to know, by removing sockets from one leg to another, how do you do it without affecting your alignment?

    • @AdaptableOrg
      @AdaptableOrg  3 года назад +1

      Lots of trial and error and lots of questions when I go see my prosthetist. For the most part, as long as you get it adjusted at the prosthetist and you only loosen two adjecent screws for the pyramid adapter, then when you tighten those two screws, the alignment will be the same. There are also some pin systems that make it easier and faster to swap feet. They've just never been practical for my leg configurations.
      It's still never quite as good as having professional supervision and adjustment, but being 4 hours away and changing feet for a variety of activities means I've had to figure it out and get comfortable with it.

    I am not writing, but I have been an amputee for the last 7 years!
    What the main overwhelming feeling of losing a leg is sheer gutwrenching frustration, depression and anger! But also there is a huge feeling of bloody minded determination that it is not going to beat you!
    Also you get used to falling! My tally in the last 3 years is roughly 150. Which is why they have just taken off my other leg!

    I am having a bka sept 27th due to pain from a “low risk surgery” that screwed my foot up royally. I can walk about a block or two at most and can no longer wear a shoe. 2 additional surgeries I’ve had to try correct it but they screwed thongs up even more. I’m pretty much screwed now and have decided to go with a bka. A couple of quick questions if you don’t mind.
    Will I be able to mow, walk my kids to the park ect afterward? Will I be able to work 8 hours a day as pharmacist on my feet most the time? Do people stare at you when you go out? Do people ask you a lot what happened and does that get old? Do you have any advice overall for me?
    Thanks man!

    • @AdaptableOrg
      @AdaptableOrg  2 года назад

      Long-term, you'll be able to do pretty much anything. I had an ankle fusion for about 18 months and was in a very similar situation. I could walk, but it was painful. Being on your feet 8 hours a day as a pharmacist, yes, eventually. It takes about 18 months give or take to fully settle in. And it's not a straight line. There will be good weeks and bad weeks. Don't hesitate to use a wheelchair or crutches either at home or at work as needed. It's not convenient, but it's better than the pain.
      Yeah, people stare occasionally, but honestly, I don't even notice. My wife notices way more than I do. People do ask a lot of questions, and other times people are awkward. I've embraced it, and I frequently use humor to disarm people and know that it's not a big deal to me. Even now, 5 years in, there's still good weeks and bad weeks. Twice a year or so depending on how hard I push myself, I'll prefer a wheelchair to my leg for a couple of days.
      The best advice I can offer is to find a really great prosthetist who won't be satisfied until you're doing everything you want to do. They'll be involved with you for the rest of your life , so you want a good one. Any other advice would be totally context dependent on goals, finances, schedule flexibility, etc. Happy to answer other questions. Just email me, yougotthis at garrettdimon.com.

    Both of my legs were crushed at the tibial plateau (below the knee) in a car accident in 2010. I've had severe lymphedema ever since... But things have gotten worse lately the skin is deformed and ulcerating, fluid leaks, and there is constant pain and itching. The last straw is I've been developing bad neuropathy in my feet which has made walking very very painful.
    So I've been considering trying to find a doctor to amputate..... Ideally both legs below the knee. But I've been looking at the mortality figures and frankly they're terrifying. However I have t think the reason they're so bad is because of how poor the health is of most people getting amputations (like severe diabetics, etc). For a not terribly out of shape otherwise fairly healthy 39 year old man, the risk would be dramatically less than the average right? I feel like my activity level would increase post amputation because I really avoid standing and walking due to the pain right now.
    Am I crazy for even considering it? The feeling of rot thanks to the edema drives me mad and while I used to say at least I could still walk now with my foot nerves dying I can't even say that Because it's too painful to stay on my feet

    • @jeremypreston5009

      If i do end up getting amputations I swear when I wake up from anesthesia I'm going to look the surgeon right in the face and say "you were supposed to cut the OTHER leg!"

      @LavenderGardenia Год назад

      How are you now and what have you decided?

    • @jeremypreston5009
      @jeremypreston5009 Год назад

      @@LavenderGardenia still hurting. The neuropathy is getting worse and now it burns when I take pressure off my feet on top of being hyper sensitive when I walk. The leakage of fluid is as bad as ever and the odor drives me mad.... The itching and scabbing and raw sensation hasn't gone anywhere....
      As far as progress I had something of a change in insurance so I still need to figure out who my general doctor is, see them, and try to convince them to give me a referral.
      From what I understand the neuropathy at this point isn't really reversible and that makes it very challenging to walk. I feel like it would allow me to be more mobile and active now if i got them amputated.

      Absolutely. The first year is generally up and down, but you can always use varying combinations of crutches, wheelchairs, or other assistive devices depending on what works for you and how your leg is feeling on a given day. Sometimes it can be difficult, but there's usually ways to adapt and manage pain, especially if you can coordinate with your professors.

    whats the point of putting a sock on the fake foot?

    • @AdaptableOrg
      @AdaptableOrg  2 года назад +2

      Mainly to prevent the foot from tearing up your shoes. With the sock layer between the foot shell and your shoe, it provides some ability to slide and reduce friction. Otherwise, since foot shells tend to be harder, they can wear out some shoes-especially in the toe area-very quickly.
