Prosthetics & Suction Suspension Systems
Suction is one of the simplest suspension options for prosthetics. For general durability, suction is hard to beat, but the outer sleeve adds weight, and restricts movement due to the extra material. The sleeves also have to be replaced regularly because they'll eventually wear out and get a tiny hole, and even a pin-size hle means they won't be able to maintain suction which results in a pistoning effect with your socket and residual limb.
While most prosthetic supplies like liners can be replaced via insurance every 6 months, sleeves are generally eligible to be replaced whenever they're needed. Adding a gaiter or inner sleeve to go betwen the socket and outer sleeve can help reduce fric...

Prosthetic Hybrid Vacuum and Pin Socket Suspension Systems
Просмотров 21 тыс.4 года назад
My current system is a hybrid vacuum/pin system. The pin at the end of my liner clicks into the bottom of my socket for a strong physical connection. You can hear it click, and you know it's on. However, the connection isn't quite as solid as other systems. The result is al little pistoning with every step. With the vacuum seal in conjunction with the pin, there's a little more stability. The p...

Overview of Prosthetic Suspension Options

Notes & Links: There's an increasing number of options for suspension systems these days. They all have their strengths and weaknesses depending on amputation level, activity level, and activity type. In some cases, multiple types of suspensions can be used together to provide redundancy. Let's talk about dealing with sweat and prosthetics. What are some options to mitigate sweat, help ensure a better fit, and take care of your residual limb. If you're doing any kind of heavy workout, chances are good you'll want to regularly take off your liner and dump the sweat out. While sweat is unavoidable, there are options to mitigate it. Everyone is so different. Some people may sweat m...
Going to The Beach and Pools with a Prosthetic Leg
Просмотров 26 тыс.4 года назад
Notes & Links: Not much in the way of links this week. It's really just about the advice and considerations for spending time at the beach, in pools, and hot tubs. 1. Ask your prosthetist about getting an extra socket or using a check socket for the beach/pool. 2. Ask your prosthetist about an extra foot shell that you can glue a non-slip sole onto and drill holes into. 3. Remember to disassemb...

Same here. It's winter and my husband keeps it 80 degrees in the house. After cooking over a stove I can't even eat from being sick from the heat. When I take off my prosthetic I do have sweat that pours out on floor. I have my own room and that's where I Stay when I'm not doing housework. I'm a senior by the way. Lost my ankle from a rare sarcoma cancer called Leiomyosarcoma. I can walk pretty easy with my prosthetic leg only after two weeks. It still needs something done to adjust it. After two times doing adjustments, I still walk pigeon toed somewhat. He can't figure out the problem.

Thank you for this introduction of the prosthetic components game. I've been a btk amputee for 2 years and need this kind of education to help me use my new leg (I just got my 2nd leg yesterday) to its full potential. So I've subscribed and hope to receive notification on the 2nd installment (since you started 4 yrs ago I'm sure they are already out there) very soon, this is a education for amputees.

28yo, leg amputee for 1 year now and sweat on the leg is not really an issue. However, i have noticed sweating twice as much on the rest of my body since i lost my leg. I was told this is because my body now has less space to cool off so yea I assume that every amputee will have issues with sweating, one way or another :p

I use an Ottobock Quickchange. Allows me to change from my Meridium foot to my rush foot for any water activities. Allows me to use my main socket & it's easy to take the extra foot to the beach in a small bag without carrying a cumbersome water leg. Best thing I ever did & has saved me a fortune having water legs made every few years.

63 year old left bk amputee. Lost my leg 44 years ago. I’d say sweat is one of, if not the, biggest headache I have. Use a pin with silicone sleeve, as well as a generation 2 acl brace modified to be integrated into my socket. Works great to keep my leg on securely, even while working out. It also provides lateral stability to the residual limb. My key to healthy skin is the use of isopropyl rubbing alcohol to stay CLEAN! Hygiene is number 1 in keeping healthy skin.

This is great 👌🏻here’s a few tips that may help - My prosthetist made some pelite foam wedges to help with getting the alignment right with different shoes heights so definitely take those shoes with you to your appointments. wrapping your footshell with a plastic bag or cling film/plastic wrap will help shoes and boots slide on easier. I added a pool noodle to pad out the pylon and adapters from wrecking my snowboarding boots and the plastic bag trick works amazing on snowboard boots 😉 I use velcro to hold my flip flops (just make sure the hook side is on the flip flop and the fluffy side is on the foot shell or havianas stock strapped flip flops. The proflex align is a fantastic adjustable foot for those that like to wear heels Hope this may help 🦿🤗

I ride English and just had a zipper put in the front of my tall boots. Commonly they have zippers in the back these days but they didn't work well for me. Ariat just released a line of western boots with Zippers especially for amputees. I wear the Ossur ankle that works for wearing heels because it also works for putting one's heel down to ride. Medicare has disallowed it but I've sent in an appeal.

Very nice video. I'm trying to fine-tune my socket and Proflex XC foot. My immediate issue is getting the socket to fit as well as possible. I have the A/P correct, it feels great with equal pressure all along the anterior of the stump. The socket still presses too much medial at the top of the socket. Not sure if the adjustment for this is best found at the bottom or the top pyramid. I'm experimenting & I'll figure it out. Thanks for the info you shared, it helps me understand.
