  • Let's talk about dealing with sweat and prosthetics. What are some options to mitigate sweat, help ensure a better fit, and take care of your residual limb. If you're doing any kind of heavy workout, chances are good you'll want to regularly take off your liner and dump the sweat out.
While sweat is unavoidable, there are options to mitigate it. Everyone is so different. Some people may sweat more. Some less. Some of you may have ultra-sensitive skin. Ultimately, your best bet is try a few different things. If you have really sensitive skin, I'd definitely recommend talking to a dermatologist about specialized options.
My first line of defense is liner-liners. Just like you were socks on your feet, wearing a liner-liner on your residual limb can help wick sweat.
    Notes & Links:
Knit-rite Liner-Liner: These are my everyday liner. I keep them in the drawer by the bed and love them. They can also help reduce shearing/pinching from your rubber liner. Whenever your knee bends, it stretches and can cause some shearing with your skin that's really uncomfortable. With a liner-liner, you have an extra layer that can slide between your skin and liner.
    amputeestore.c...
Swiftwick Amputee Liner-Liner: These are thicker liner-liners, and I won't work out or do heavy physical activity without one. I usually layer them over the thinner liner-liners. If I know I'm going to be out for a while, I'll even bring extras and change them every couple of hours.
    swiftwick.com/...
Amputee Essentials Resilience Ultra-rich Moisturizer: When your residual limb does take a beating, this can help after you take your leg off.
    www.amazon.com...
Alps Silicon Skin Lotion: This can be great to put on and reduce friction. You can use it daily or just when you anticipate heavy activity.
    4oz - www.amazon.com...
    32oz - www.amazon.com...
Alps Prosthetic Ointment: Whenever my leg hurts from dry or damaged skin, this is my go to. I'll put it on at night on any affected areas. When I do, I always make sure to wear a stump shrinker too because the ointment is kind of greasy, and nobody wants that on their bed.
    www.amazon.com...
Alps Prosthetic Anti-perspirant Spray: This is just a solid anti-perspirant spray. The only downside is having the patience to wait for it to dry. If I'm going on a long bike ride or run, I'll set aside the time to wait for it to dry, but otherwise, I'm not great about being that patient.
    www.amazon.com...
Certain Dri Prescription Strength: Certain Dri is a fairly popular brand of anti-perspirant. Like the Alps Spray, it has to dry as well. It may be easier to find as well.
    www.amazon.com...
Body Glide Anti-chafe Balm: Shearing between your skin and liner/liner-liners can happen. Even if sweating isn't a big issue for you, shearing can be. This can help on that front.
    www.amazon.com...
Body Glide Skin Glide: Just like the anti-chafe balm and silicon lotion, this is just another option to help ensure less shearing and chafing.

63 year old left bk amputee. Lost my leg 44 years ago. I’d say sweat is one of, if not the, biggest headache I have. Use a pin with silicone sleeve, as well as a generation 2 acl brace modified to be integrated into my socket. Works great to keep my leg on securely, even while working out. It also provides lateral stability to the residual limb. My key to healthy skin is the use of isopropyl rubbing alcohol to stay CLEAN! Hygiene is number 1 in keeping healthy skin.

I wish I shared your optimistic outlook. I've been wearing a leg for over 10 years. I've had 4 different legs, pin lock, manual vacuum, and electric vacuum. I can go about 5 minutes of moderate exercise before my leg starts to fall off. Antiperspirants cause horrible rashes. New liners help but at $1800 each i can't afford them. Pain after strenuous use is a constant no matter how well the socket fits. I have put on so much weight since I lost my leg that i won't be able to wear a leg in a few years anyway so all of this is moot. I wish you and your viewers all the best and better luck than i have had.

I had a friend who worked in death valley at a restraint it was hot she said not to use baby powder it makes mud they used cornstarch because a little went a long way and it was slippery I don’t know if it would just make your liner side off but it sure helps where your skin is rubbing from getting sore and irritated

Thank you very much Garrett for the video because it helped me. I just had an amputation on the left leg and received the first prosthetics about a week ago now. I am having some discomfort but it is getting better. I have been told to wear the leg for about 2 hours and take it off and examine the leg and then wear it again for two hours and take it off. I have been told for right now just wear the leg about 5 to 6 hours a day. I meet again Monday and will see if it is increased. thank you so much for the great information.

Hey thanks Garrett- yep - left BKA a little over a year ago - yep, it can get sweaty and that means it can stink too - thanks for talking about less appealing aspects (the gross sh*t) - if i can pick up tips and tricks on how to handle the not-as-much-fun maintenance/preventive issues i have more time to enjoy the really hip side of having this thing despite a few inconveniences. yeah, i can feel sorry for myself (and i do) but that's such a waste when - being honest here - i got the coolest leg on the block!

@@BracaPhoto thanks for the response man! I am doing much better. The first two weeks I was pretty much a mess. I go in for my check socket tomorrow, then hopefully get my prosthetic in a week. 🙂 My wife has pretty much been my rock. I will owe her a trip to Italy after this is all done lol. Glad to hear everything is going well for you. I am still using some pain meds for phantom limb pain. It feels like I have a nail lodge in my foot and still lots of burning. I had a lot of pain before surgery so I assume this is normal. Hopefully I’ll be able to get off of them soon. I am seeing a pain specialist right now to help with it.

Well I’ve had my prosaic for around 6 months now a lot of the time I’ve had trouble getting in and out of the bathtub so I just kept using those packs of wet wash cloths like they use in the hospital they are made of coconut fiber so instead of just tossing them in the trash just wash them out and reuse them they last a long time you can also get the coconut fiber in rolls like paper towels they are a little bigger. Anyway I was getting broken out from the stuff on them several years ago I was having problems with my skin and also smelling bad I was doing a lot of heavy work outside with machinery and was bundled up usually with 2 to 3 layers of Levi’s pants and jackets and would sweat quite a bit during the day the thing I found that worked the best was apple cider vinegar I fill up a spray bottle around 1/4 to 1/3 of vinegar then fill the rest with water. After a bath or shower I will spray under my arms and between my legs with this it eliminated all of the complaints about me smelling bad and none of the problems I had had with deodorants plus it is a anti-fungal and kills bacteria after losing my leg I will spray the inside of my liner and wipe it down with the vinegar spray and do the same with my stump also a couple of times a week I will just use the coconut towels with about a tablespoon full of rubbing alcohol on it and wipe down my liner and stump which they told me to do a couple of times a week anyway. I haven’t found any of those socks you were talking about but when it’s been in the 90’s and above I’ve been wearing my Shrinker sock underneath the silicon liner it’s a little tight but I don’t seem to hardly sweat this way instead of a half cup of sweat it is barely damp when I take off my prosthetics and it dries in just a few minutes way different than having to mop up all the puddles then trying to put your leg back on again. Give the vinegar water a try it doesn’t mess up your skin it’s cheep and the smell of the vinegar is gone in a couple of minutes way faster than the deodorants and they’ve been using this for thousands of years I was surprised to find this out I’m guessing you can’t sell deodorants if you tell people how people use to do thing’s before in France they would just spray perfume on but nobody else did that 😄👍

Get yourself an extended shower chair. It goes over the side of the tub & is quite easy & safe to use. Your insurance should cover the cost.

    Hi Garret!
I'm also a bka, and from your experience, which type of prosthetic have you found to be the most comfortable?
My stub is a bit pointed, so the pin locket, and now I found, the grip system both are very uncomfortable for me. I usually just stick with the basic sock and foam liner..

    • @AdaptableOrg

I haven't personally looked into it, but I have also heard of folks trying it. I've found that liner-liners paired with heavy-duty anti-perspirant have been the most effective solution for me, but that's one of those areas where everybody can be so different, it's worth exploring options with your prosthetist.

I got my bk 6 months ago so I'm new as well...
When i got my carbon fiber setup i made sure to write down all of the information for each and every part... that way i can order a different used "foot" on eBay and try out different types of setups...
They go as low as $300 a piece but I've learned there are fundamental differences between styles and you can't tell that by reading it from a brochure 👍👍
Also my prosthetics guy is FANTASTIC... He gives everyone a tour of his lab where all the magic happens ... he has many used parts and will let you try out anything you want 👍👍
