- After his arm was amputated, doctors outfit Johnny, a self-described “hillbilly” from West Virginia, with one of the world’s most advanced robotic arms.

In 2005, Johnny Matheny was diagnosed with cancer in his arm. Sadly, they had to amputate his left arm. After being introduced to Johns Hopkins Applied Physics lab, he qualified for a cutting-edge biotechnology study seeking an amputee or amputees to test a new robot arm - said to be the most technologically advanced robotic arm in the world. Johnny can control his new arm with his mind, giving him a level of motor control impossible until now. In this interview, we follow Johnny's journey from his illness to becoming the real bionic man.
Check out our video with Jerral, an Iraq War vet who is also helping the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab test their new bionic arm: • Iraq War Veteran Tests...

BLESS THIS MAN’S POSSITIVITY
Bless?
PMA!!!!
Eduardo Mirafuentes Yeah, bless!!
Yes!
Agreed, he was a joy to be around! It's really inspiring to see people stay positive under the most trying circumstances.
I’m glad they put the arm on a happy guy :)
It never occurred to you that having an arm makes him happier... lol
Man i'm almost crying rn, ngl :') i feel happy for him.
Wonder if it helps outcomes; it probably makes it easier to spend long hours testing and improving the arm with an upbeat user.
I'd be happy with anything resembling an arm that I could move if I lost my arm. This is some groundbreaking neural prosthetics research, and I hope that the research gets taken so far that you could almost FEEL things the same.

Don't forget the 🍕 on the roof
I love his humor for how much he went through and hes still happy RESPECT
@King Savage yeh :v
Humour is literally one of the most beautiful and most effective ways of coping with the horrific reality of life and death.
@A1 when you put it that way kinda sounds mean but it’s fax no offense
Absolutely. It's really inspiring, and it's awesome this arm provides an incredible opportunity out of a severe injury.
He’s a child molester…
He can get his food from the oven without burning his hand
Omg that's the greatest
yeah but that might damage it and that seems like expensive technology
I think they added feeling into the arm so you cant do that.
@@giladlevitz3283 feeling is different from pain.
@@asafimc I meant sensation.
I can't wait for engineers and surgeons figure this thing out!

So I can use it to make an arm that can destroy the world :D

Alolan Exeggutor he has the best outlook on life in my opinion and I love it

I know. He's like the Terminator Texan. No offense.
Nice
Alolan Exeggutor yup
Such a cool dude. Id be depressed af if i lost my arm.

We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster.
Amber Berries no harder better faster stronger
thats what she said ;)
Amber Berries, nice Robocop reference.
The Major pretty sure that's the bionic man
YES! Finally a Deus Ex reference around all these videos! :D BTW they said the ingame printable limbs would be a thing. Anyone heard any news about those?
I wonder how many years will pass until people cut their arms off to have bionic arms. Not for volunteering, but for fashion.
Not Big Surprise lol i was thinking the same
Tbh i would do that
Tbh you dumb
I would when they're more advanced & provide more functionality than my current arms. Built in phone/map, swap-able tools stored in the fingers, haptic sensors, etc. We're close to nailing down the basics, shouldn't be that much longer for all of that.
Not Big Surprise
Don't worry bois, the gun-slinging engineer, it *engi-here!*
this honestly brought a tear to my eye. this mans a living inspiration
I’m glad he’s happy nothing warms my heart more than somebody finally achieving something they’ve been needing

that's pretty badass. I can't wait to see people with amputated limbs having cybernetics as an everyday thing like it's nothing.

SHADYCOCK yeah I mainly want one because they are cool and be more separated from this humanity
Muscle Cars
Thats almost impossible
Muscle Cars One step at a time, first let's give those poor people the best we can.
Im sure that if you lost your arm you would love to have a new one, even if its a "fake" one :s
Bless this man. He has a great positive personality with also a good sense of humor. Those that disliked this video have no soul.
This has me thinking. When will we have prosthetics able to move as fast or faster as a real arm. How long? And how expensive?
James Ashe it’s not just you
You'll know when the military requires mandatory amputation
@Bob Swaggot
We need foreskin regeneration technology and science based life extension research and stem cell research.

And then have the doctors go like "Ok, if that keeps happenign we have to abort this project. Shame."
It's amazing how far this technology has come, and still has to go.
He’s the coolest man I’ve ever seen. The most humorous person too! He’s one of the most awesome men in this world.
I'm annoyed that the robot hand is not the same length as the normal right hand

Mr.Potato
Well,,,*It's 1000-Times Better Than No Having No Arm At All.!
Mr.Potato When it is commercial they will probably be able to adjust the length.
I'd love to have an extra long limb especially one that I can extend and retract at will!
It's a prototype, dude - with time and more research they'll come in much more symmetrical sizes for various body shapes. For now, he's just happy to have a working arm that's blazing a trail for other amputees to have a better life. As he mentioned, his next upgrade includes sensation so he can feel what it's touching.
They better hook him up with either a: FREE ARM, or at least one at a REASONABLE DISCOUNT..
The arm is specially built for him so i dont see why they wouldnt
I'm sure he'll get one considering not many people have that implant. Once they move onto the next version of the arm they won't need the old one.
@@ub3rfr3nzy94 the video said he was the first bionic arm ever
Humble, funny, and intelligent. He has a lot going for him.
Not sure what’s more amazing. The advancement in robotics with neuroscience or this guys unbelievable attitude and his upbeat spirit.

This guy really made my day. How he managed to stay so positive is incredible. The fact he is embracing this and helping push the researchers farther and faster makes me hope he is a household name someday. Maybe someday his face will be in medical and engineering textbooks under the "Applied Cybernetics" section.
This guy was the perfect guy to choose for this. He pushes it as far as he can to see if it can be used as a arm and hand. Pushing the boundary so we can see what can and can’t be accomplished.
Is this Walter White without a hand?
RainersLV
Guess he lost his arm in prison
RainersLV Every middle aged bald white guy looks like Walter White.
No bro this is HiesenBorg
My Father was born without the use of his left arm and hand. This is amazing. Not just the technology, but the attitude of the man himself. Maximum love and respect to Johnny.
I noticed that this guy thinks so simply and straightforward and maybe that's why he works the arm so well?
I love this guys attitude so much I hope he does whatever he wants to do
This could be a movie trailer
StarryBucks yep

This is my life goal as a mechantronics engineer, to make a real bionic man possible and available to every individual who needs it, it's so heart warming to know I'm not the only one heading towards that goal.
You can do it!
Asterio could you make me another heart ventricle I was born without one so I would owe my life to you if you could do that
Asterio id like to be able to punch through walls and shoot bullets from my fingers. can you work on that?
hey build me a whole body
Satoma Karlsson Everyone has dreams, some of which take years of hard work and dedication to achieve. I think you went wrong on the "hard work" part.
He's the guy, who just won't quit! It's a golden quality for this project.
For things like this, it's what I want to study engineering for, it's exciting what the future holds, plus that this man is an example of positive mind and happiness to follow
