Overthinking and anxiety when driving

  • Overthinking and anxiety go hand in hand. While overcoming anxiety can involve subconscious work in hypnotherapy, it's not always about releasing a dark event from your childhood. If you stop overthinking you will stop feeling anxious and are free to enjoy your life. Here's the clip I mentioned about Robocop to show how overthinking causes your thoughts to become screwed up • Robocop electrocutes h...

People often say to me that it would be dangerous to stop thinking about all of the things that could happen when they drive. That is totally wrong.
Experienced drivers find driving easy because they do everything on autopilot. This "autopilot" is actually the subconscious mind in action. Given that your subconscious is hundreds of times faster and more powerful than your conscious, why would you want to drive consciously? Overthinking and analysing everything causes you to go back to driving with your slow conscious mind like you did when you first learned to drive.
This is why learner drivers find driving so hard and drive so slowly. They have to think about everything consciously and process it all because it hasn't yet become an automatic subconscious skill. You're doing the same when you overthink! You're overloading your conscious mind and convincing yourself it's safer than sitting back and letting it all be done on autopilot.
I forgot to mention the Robocop film in the intro so it might not make sense when I say let me give you the example from the film I spoke about. Does that mean I need to scrap the whole video and remake it as an overthinker would? No, who cares? It's worrying about lots of small things like that which stops you from achieving things!
The funny thing about this is that when you tell someone they're overthinking they will often say "I'm not. You don't understand, it's because..." and then prattle on for 20 minutes about one thing after another. They can't see that they are just proving that they are overthinking!
If you overthink the solution as much as you do the "problem" (which you don't even have) then you will never "fix it". People often want the solution to be long and complicated and insist that it must take dozens of therapy sessions spread over many months. NO, NO, NO! That is you overthinking again!
I have helped people fix anxiety that they've had for 30 years in 20 minutes and they are left baffled as to how it went so quickly. It's because we found what they were overthinking and changed the way they think about it! Yes, it can be that simple!
STOP OVERTHINKING AND GET ON WITH IT!!!!!!

    Maybe I'm overthinking it but...
    1) When the male cop pushes the female cop onto the chain metal fence and holds her in place, with all that electricity flying round, my first thought was - that's a bit dangerous !
    2) Did Robocop just tresspass by breaking and entering the lock in the first place.
I couldn't find a direct quote online, but if anyone out there has a copy of Roald Dahls' Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, there's a section in that where the Grandmother is giving a list of "What-Ifs" to which Wonka responds something along the lines of "We don't want any what-iffers here!"
Also I think the more active your imagination, the more "what-ifs" you create for yourself.

Great video. I've watched the film mentioned so many times and would love to find the equivalent of the situation. I'll buy that for a dollar!

The equivalent is hypnosis and what you see Robocop going through when he's plugged in is what you'd see if you could somehow get a computer readout from someone in hypnosis. The closest we can get to that now is probably an ECG machine which shows a clear change when people enter trance.
That's why I say hypnosis isn't about relaxing, it's about focusing and finding thoughts and beliefs that keep you stuck. It can be an unpleasant experience and the reason it often only takes an hour to fix is that not many people want to go through it again!
