Ya this movie was really good. One of the main factors that caused this movie to underperform was some licensing decisions implemented by the D&D management that had hard core players infuriated. Those players and their followers essentially blockaded the game and some of the peripherals for months until the company reversed their licensing policy. No martter how excited players were for the movie, most of them simply decided not to support the project out of protest.

As it stands today, D&D has made $208.2 million in box office. It’s really weird that a movie that brings in that much money flopped. I work at a local theater and people loved it and came out to see it quite a bit. Having seen it myself, I’m sorry to hear that it flopped. I was looking forward to a sequel. It had a huge $150m budget. Of the goss the cinemas get 50%. It’s a bit sad but they could have made it cheaper as the amazing part of the movie was the script and the acting delivery. It was just really fun. But hopefully we’ll get more D&D movies, if they can learn to control costs a bit.

I think another unintended consequence of Covid was that people learned how to find content online where they really didn't realize they could previously. I think movies post Covid have taken a hard hit at the theaters because many people just don't need to go out to the theaters anymore. It is really just a novelty now. It is just easier to watch a new release online than dealing with expensive snacks, sticky floors and crying babies. Movie theaters seem to be circling the drain.

The reason why these movies and so many others flop is because there is way, way, too much movie releases, one after another after another and on and on, not all will be successful because people don't have time in their day too watch everything nor the funds, I'm a movie buff since I was 12 in 1993 and I struggle to watch everything that gets released, it's just way too much for me to handle.

Also, it was sandwiched between John Wick 4 and Super Mario Bros. Honor Among Thieves released just a week after John Wick 4 and that movie had a long tail. It was still raking a sizeable amount during Easter. The target audience for the 3 films have an overlap and people decided to spend their money on a proven franchise and/or a beloved character instead. It didn't help that Honor Among Thieves was marketed poorly. Production was over budget so they skimped on marketing.
Perhaps if they released it later during Thanksgiving or pre-Christmas, after Baldur's Gate 3's success, and ride it's coattail, they may have had the chance to at least even breakeven. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess as no one could have predicted how successful BG 3 will be.

Came down to the comments to make this point. My D&D group had been planning on going to see it as a group in place of one of our regular sessions. Then the OGL mess happened, multiple members of the group swore they would never give WotC another cent, and the idea was promptly scrapped. I have a feeling if you were to ask around in the RPG community you'd find a whole lot of similar stories

    • @fanchon8305
      @fanchon8305 7 месяцев назад +1

I would also add that, at least for us "older" D&D players, we remember the abomination that was the movie in the '90's and were very hesitant to see the franchise destroyed again with something similar. That was certainly one reason I didn't want to see it. Regardless of how good Jeremy Irons normally is, even he couldn't save that one and his hamming it up actually hurt it, I think.

I refused to see the D&D movie or buy anything from D&D until they put the word perpetual into the OGL. I was never a fan of the OGL but now that they have shown they are willing to "unpublish" a license and take anything ever published under the OGL for free, backing down isn't enough. They need to make it impossible for the same tactic to be tried again later.

The biggest reason movies are flopping in this economy is just that. The economy.
Who has money to go out week after week and watch movies in a theater? If you inculded popcorn and drink it costs between 40-60$ now.
It's the plague of hyper-inflation. If it wasn't for Black Friday this year, X-mas shopping would be almot non-existent in bigger stores because a suspect a lot of people will be looking for gifts at Dollarama because thats all they can really afford.
Rent eats up about 70-80% of people's income and then they have food and bills on top of that.
Prices both in the film industry and the overall economy at large are the main reason so many businesses are seeing a drop on consumers. It's just not sustainable. Businesses need to find ways to get prices down or this trend will continue.

Everything you said is 100% true and well articulated.
You then include the modern convenience of the internet and streaming services, gaming consoles. Why would I waste a entire evening and 60$ when I can stay at home on my couch?
It also hasnt helped that Hollywood worked overtime the last few years to tell half the country they dont like them very much. When on the fence whether to stay home and play Elden Ring drop 60$ watching a movie. I recall Hollywood award shows and their entertainment media calling me a bigot, makes my decision a bit easier.
Its not just one thing, but many pieces to a puzzle and everyone is different, but it does seem the non blockbuster film is on the endangered species list.

For my personal needs, after watching this video and reading the comments, I thank myself for having never relied on a box-office as a guidance to cherish a movie. The financial success or drop of a movie can find its rational explanations in many external factors, which undoubtedly, do not alter its intrinsic value in a good or bad way, whatsoever. A commercial flop does not necessarily mean that the movie is bad. I only trust my judgment when it comes to movies. It's all about tastes and feelings, and it's personal, intimate. I stongly keep myself away from being instructed or influenced and my choices never disappoint or betray me, they never flop.

Dead Reckoning and the covenant were great and didn’t deserve to flop, but I don’t think Air And Killers of the Flower Moon should count as flops since they were streaming movies given short releases for award purposes. Also KotFM would not have made money at the box office regardless of what era it was released.

Guy Ritchie was done dirty this year. While his name might not draw what it used to, there had to be damage done by releasing Operation Fortune and The Covenant within 3 weeks of each other. They might be very different movies for very different audiences, but who would even think to cannibalize box office returns from the same filmmaker?

I honestly believe people just aren’t going to the theater anymore, kind of like how people want to work remotely more and more. I have a large screen tv with surround sound at my home with 2, young kids. I can just wait til the movie drops on Amazon or some other streaming service. It has to be a super special event, like a Star Wars film, before I even think about going to the movies. And with all the recent flops out there, why would I waste the time and energy to go see a movie when I can just watch it at home.

Movies “flopping” are 100% on the theater industry. Tickets are $13-15 (20+ for 3d or something special)
$15 for popcorn. $12 for a drink. Your avg theater visit for 2 becomes like $50-60. This list alone is a $500 watch list. F that. I’ll happily rent it for $10 at home or wait for it to go on streaming that I pay like $10-15/mo per service already.

Not to mention, the most important end scene and post credits for a Marvel movie in a looooong time.

    What killed movies in theaters:
    - The tickets for a family of four is $50+
    - Movies being available online 30-60 days after release
    - All those clear, big screens people bought since COVID offer a better viewing experience than the noisy, overpriced theater.

Going to the theaters has become such a chore with prices and such. Unless it's something that needs to be seen on a bigger screen, why should I brave a trip to see it when I can wait a few months to watch it at home? Making sure you've seen the latest movie, TV show or played the latest video game has become so tiring.
