Strapping ammunition, missiles, thrusters, vetc, that could be detonated if an attack hits the shield could have some use.
If that stuff is integrated into the suit it could destroy / damage the unit. Having it in the shield would give it a bit of distance between the explosion and the suit. In space with a vacuum there is no shockwave from an explosion so even a short distance from the mobile suit would give some protection from one element of the explosion (shrapnel, radiation, etc, can travel in space).

  • @neonlightillusion

I think a common misconception with armaments is that the slightest touch will make them explode. But missiles and rockets need to be primed for detonation - in reality if you shot at a parked and inactive missile you would probably cause the fuel inside to burn, but you wouldn’t get an explosion like what lots of media suggests - especially with nuclear weapons.

That and the sheer force that left arm is suffering when using the shield defending GP02 during the atomic bomb must have been massive. It's no wonder why during the fight with Kou later on the left arm seemed unresponsive, because it was already damaged at that point.

I'm still waiting for Mercurius to be mentioned. That mobile suit is specifically designed to have a defensive role and has 2 effective shields.
The most obvious one is its Planet Defensors which actually took multiple shots from Wing Zero's twin buster rifle - one of the strongest weapons in Gundam as stated. It can even be used to act as a weapon - case in point, when it was used to deflect WZ beam saber.
Another is its Crash shield which also houses a beam saber pointed towards the front of the shield. Now if you think of that design, it's practically very effective. Imagine expecting either the opponent or the Mercurius getting close and Mercurius ready to guard with its crash shield. Then suddenly a beam saber pops out in front.

I never really saw the ZGMF-X13A's shield as a shield. I mean, I don't even remember Rau Le Creuset parrying with just the blunt shield, he uses the beam saber that comes out of it. The whole thing about the Providence was that it was really built as a highly offensive weapons platform - basically if the Freedom was a fighter or lightly armored shock/lance cavalry, the Providence was like if you change a cataphract from an armored horse with a rider that can swap between bow and lance plus a mace/hammer and swords (one on the rider's belt if he gets dismounted, but one on the horse depending on the nation, ex some Chinese heavy cavalry) and a shield, you have an armored rider with six arms using crossbows and lances and a mace and riding a tiger the size of a bear.
Or in terms of modern combat, if the Freedom was an F15, the Providence is retrofitting the Iowa like a modern Ise, except instead of F/A-18s, it has drones.

Considering their compact fusion reactors are capable of doing that and allowing the constant use of a small colony sized cutting beam sword from Epyon. Its more than able to handle firing from the shield. But then again enemy forces outside of Endless Waltz in the after colony era can barely make a dent into the gundam themselves even when firing in large groups. Because the story makes them nigh invincible.

I always compared the TBR to late UC mega beam rifles really (F91 and Victory era). IIRC, in episode 50 of Victory Gundam, the V2 Assault-Buster fires its mega beam rifle and it looked quite similar to how the TBR would be; destroying multiple mobile suits just by being near it as opposed to directly striking them.
We also can't forget that Gundam Wing is much more super robot, so it appears to take a bunch of liberties based on the current situation as opposed to "realism".

Another fantastic list sir! As for the rule of cool of weapons systems integrated into shields - yeah, it can be a risk of course but looking at the examples your lists cited the end gains often outweigh the risks in most cases. In all reality if your shield with weapons couldn't stop the shot that destroyed it or your machine, then in most cases a regular shield wouldn't have done much good for you either while having that extra weapon would easily be a game changer in any engagement. Of course there are exceptions and design concepts to keep in mind like on the Gyan with it's surface launchers being vulnerable to well timed and placed beam shots; all in all armament will almost always outweigh defense only options whenever possible because of the merciless nature of the battlefield demanding a machine be as armed to the teeth as possible.
Speaking of, that would be a fun list to look - the most heavily / ridiculously armed machines. Those machines that literally clank not because they are giant robots but because they are carrying so many weapons it's insane lol.

Honestly, the hip is probably the best place to put weapons like that. It's right at the mech's center of gravity so no parts lag behind when the suit moves. And unless you're a crack shot you're unlikely to _hit_ anywhere near the hip (which is why most mobile suit kills from guns tend to be from chest shots.)

It's able to detach the gatling if need may be, and it also stores the heat saber. For a modification to a grunt shield (and also earlier UC) the concept could have been rolled out more widespread leading to better success for Zeon. Could you imagine a line of Zakus with drum fed gatlings marching up on the Federation? They'd really need beam weaponry to fend that off lol
