I spent my life living, restoring Victorian houses and loved some of the inventions within and would rebuild these and NEVER came across a door closer like this one. It is a work of art and you did a great job, restoring it. BTW, I worked on the house the architect for Thomas Edison built for himself, it had the most amazing electrical systems, all of the circuit breakers were beautiful pieces of art, covered with gold leaf and the box they were in was a beautiful cabinet with a lovely glass door and it was installed in the middle of the front hallway so everyone could see it and marvel, it was one of the earliest houses with full electricity in New Jersey.
Not only is it great to see these objects getting restored, I also regularly learn something new. I have never known these mechanisms already existing for so long. Thanks!
@@paulwomack5866 You're right, that's odd! There doesn't seem to be any Whitworth size that corresponds to 9/16" AF either. 1/4" Whitworth is smaller, 13.335 mm, and 5/16" is 15.24 mm.
Another discovery for me! I liked the manufacture of the spring, and also the leather gasket..all done in an exemplary cleanliness..thank you to Veronica❤ and her team👏👏👏
When you consider how utilitarian the modern version of these look, this is a beautiful piece to match its functionality!!! Wonderful job on the restoration!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That door closer saw some hard use.. They must of had kids.. I had 8 and they would destroy a freight train.. You did a very nice job as usual.. God Bless...
Wow, such an old thing makes you repair like new, I guess you must have a lot of antiques that you have repaired! Thanks for the video you shared, you are awesome!👍🌹
Браво мастеру Радеку! До последней минуты не могла догадаться, что за штука))) Представляю какая особая атмосфера царит в доме, когда окружен такими вещами! Музей, а в тоже время всем можно пользоваться))) классно!!!!
Glad to see that you not only restored it, but installed it and are using it in your own home. I imagine a restored 1880's door close like that would sell for a few hundred dollars.
Well done, as usual. I like that you do more than just make things look shiny and clean. Your decorative touches help the objects look better today than they did when they were new. I also really like that you tell your viewers about the history of the pieces you restore. It turns them from a random piece of rusted metal into something that links us back to a time when people lived, and thought, differently than we do today.
Well another awesome job Radek, and great to see it where it belongs operating on your door great work best wishes from sue and andy j from Lockdown Reading England 🏴 xx❤️
A revisit to this wonderful restoration. The more I watch your channel the more I enjoy your videos. The dry brush really brought out the lovely detailing on this piece. Thanks again for sharing this video with me and I imagine that I will find more to enjoy again. 👍👍😁😁🇨🇱🇺🇸
I like the inspiring story as much as the restoration. A man on the brink of giving is hit with inspiration and imagines an amazing invention. Then finds a way to somehow make it happen.
Amigo otro muy buen trabajo de restauracion, excelente resultado ebtenido con este Cierrapuertas vintage, mis respetos y saludos para usted y su esposa desde venezuela, un abrazo.💯👍👊🙏
Hello. It is really very successful. Your attention to detail is your strong point. I think you're the only one who pays so much attention to the smallest detail. It's hard to believe that the starting heap of junk gets to this wonderful device. At the time it was made, almost every element was decorated. It was made to last a long time. Apart from normal wear and tear there is only the spring which is broken. I find it unfortunate that you installed it outside. There is no risk that the rain will damage it? I have seen videos that are 3 years old these days. Much has changed since then. The thoroughness with which you repaired the large black frame dazzled me. You replaced every floral element that was missing. Thank you for your video. I love her so much. I wish you a good day and take care of you. I don't know how it is with you with the coronavirus crisis. Here in France it's very difficult, we are on a curfew from 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. During this time you can travel only with a derogation and for specific reasons. The fixed fine is 135 €. There are people who have recidivated and they are in prison. In addition, we are talking about a new confinement if the situation does not improve. Anyway, please take care. Gabriel (France).
Have a nice day friend, as I read, it's a hard time for everyone. Maybe it will get better soon, we have to hope. Cheers Gabriel. Hugs from the Czech Republic. Veronika and Radek
Je t'adore........!!! I mean............. shut the door !! Great video. Great object. Good find. And it takes determination to take on a restoration like this.
You made your own spring! Very nice - edit: you made very nice button round head rivets and the leather seal were also commendable. Your home is becoming a museum of restorations
I love watching your channel, you always have some unusual stuff. And it marbles me to see how you come up with ideas in fixing, and restoring them. Keep up the fantastic work.
Wonderful decorative and ornate design - it's a bit lost to us now, that kind of engineering. Something extremely functional, mundane even (although probably not when this was first made), yet the time was taken to make it beautiful. A really beautiful restoration. The gold wax is what really made it. And to see it back in use once more is fantastic. So many restoration channels show the item fully restored just sitting on a desk. Nothing wrong with that of course, but seeing the old girl closing a door again is truly great. May she give you many more years of service. Will probably outlast any modern unit by a good margin. Great stuff.
Creating that new spring was amazing work. When you pulled out that other one and it was broken into three pieces I was thinking "Oh he'll order a suitable replacement for that as there is no way to repair it". But actually making a new one was .. incredible.

That is a fascinating story about Edisons architect. What a once in n a lifetime experience that must have been.
Thank you, it is a lovely house and the new owners have taken very good care of it, too. It is like a museum but very comfortable.
Wow, I envy it. It must have been amazing. Thank you for your story. Have a nice day Radek
Wow what an interesting insight! Can one see pictures anywhere online of these things of Edison’s house you are describing?
Not only is it great to see these objects getting restored, I also regularly learn something new. I have never known these mechanisms already existing for so long. Thanks!

@@ЕвгенийТёткин-п9е спасибо :)
I looked it up: Mr. Norton's Door Closer, designed 1880's in England! Just amazing work.
Thanks :)
Of course that explains why the spanners didn't fit - the nut was 9/16".
@@Ragnar8504 I think you have the size right - but it's odd. Old British fittings would be in Whitworth sizes, not inch A/F
