This device was manufactured around 1930 to spray the insecticide DDT. The renovation was commissioned not for the subsequent use of this device, but as a reminder of our history when this device was used. It will then be exhibited in the museum.
Flour was used for the demonstration in the video :)
Something from history :
DDT was first synthesized in 1874 by the Austrian chemist Othmar Zeidler. However, its insecticidal effects were not discovered until the Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Müller in 1939, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1948. Since World War II, DDT has been used on a mass scale. It served as a preparation for the control of harmful insects in agriculture, but especially for the elimination of mosquitoes in tropical countries.
DDT was brought to Europe by the US military. The prisoners of the liberated concentration camps state in their memoirs the goodness of this powder, which effectively and immediately killed all insects.
Back in the 1960s and 1970s, DDT was also used in Czechoslovakia, for example against everything, and could usually be bought in a drugstore. It was made by Spolana Neratovice. It was cheap, very effective and chemically stable, it did not decompose. When it was poured on the bottom of the cabinet and covered with paper on which the laundry was, it touched the insects by touch for another half a year.
DDT is toxic. A lethal LD50 dose of 135 mg / kg in food was found in laboratory mice, 87 mg / kg in rats, and 1500 mg / kg in humans, although much lower values have been published. It can also penetrate the body through the skin; The LD50 in rats in this case is 1900 mg / kg DDT is highly toxic to aquatic animals despite its low solubility in water. The LC50 lethal concentration varies according to the species of fish from 8 to 100 μg / l when exposed for 96 hours.
Small doses are enough to kill insects. For houseflies (Musca domestica), the LD50 is reported at a 24-hour exposure of approximately 0.033 nag per individual.
The effect of DDT on the hormonal system
Use of DDT in the US military during World War II to protect against malaria or typhus
In 2000, a study was published showing that the breakdown product of DDT acts as an endocrine disruptor that disrupts androgen function. In rats, it showed inhibition of hormone binding to the so-called androgen receptor. In 2005, the journal Environmental Health Perspectives reported an increase in the incidence of so-called intersex frogs due to the use of DDT. In 2006, the Journal of Andrology conducted a study to reduce sperm motility and increase the incidence of defective sperm in men depending on the level of DDT metabolites in the blood.
According to American research, exposure to DDT during puberty increases the risk of breast cancer by about five times, which is attributed to its ability to disrupt the hormonal system.

Once again, this is the best restoration expert on the planet! Keep up the excellent work! You’re teaching the rest of us that old things can be made new again!
Not only did you restore the tool, a DDT disperser, but provide some historical information also, super job. Thanks for sharing this video with us. Stay strong and mask-up "again", for safety sake. 🇨🇱🇺🇸🙏😁 Paul
Wow! Such a complicated and painstaking restoration...at first I thought it was a portable cotton candy machine then I assumed it was some chemical mixer . The functional aspects of this contraption is very effective . I thought your gonna make a new impeller fan but the blade joint was perfect and since it's a hand rotated operation it doesn't need balancing ....overall a very impeccable workmanship in the restoration.
Thankyou very much for sharing this video.
This was very fascinating. Read through the history of DDT and I didn't know most of the information you provided. You are an amazing craftsman and I always stop what I'm doing when a new video comes up for your channel. You did a wonderful job with that restoration. Thank you.
Hi all. I'm in the 70's. I never saw this machine in my life. A great job. Thumbs up. Regards: Alex.
Thank you Alex :) Radek
Another excellent restoration. At first I thought this was for planting seeds, and it looked like a complicated restoration. I thought it would be hard to restore the broken impeller, but you made the entire project look easy. Thanks and smiles from the USA.
Thank you so much my friend :) Radek
Before I read your introduction to the restoration I thought the device might be for casting seed over farmland. How wrong I was! Beautiful restoration Radek, you even recreated the paint stencilled number.
Thank you for watching my friend :) Beautiful day from the Czech Republic Radek and Veronica
Hello Radek
As I have already wrote to you numerous times that I love your restoration
but I have noticed that I also love your way of finding solutions for missing parts
and doing it perfectly, your photography is amazing and so is you humor,
as always very well done
on the same note you can tell Veronica that her recipes are great,
I have already tried and enjoyed her food,
... замечательной семье и талантливым людям мое уважение !!... лайк ...👍...
Спасибо Софья :)
There’s a reason that the one song goes: 🎶Farmer, put away your DDT, don’t care ‘bout spots on my apples, just leave me the birds and the bees!”🎶
As usual, fantastic job on the restoration!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Big Yellow Taxi, originally by Joni Mitchell. Wrote the song after waking up on a vacation to Hawaii, seeing the beautiful mountains, then looking down to see a massive parking lot.
Как всегда - ждали с нетерпением новое видео. Спасибо
Я рада, спасибо :)

Another fantastic restoration! But I must comment that no matter the challenge, no matter the desire to create entertaining and absorbing content, no matter the possible return, your health must come first. Having watched almost all of your videos, I know that you always take precautions, but please consider the possible accumulative effects of working with nasty, lethal substances. I look forward to continuing to be amazed by your creativity and craftsmanship and would hate for you to be unable to continue doing something you have such an obvious passion for!
Thank you for your concern. I try to work safely.
Brilliant, I love the innovative way you restore all your damaged items. Where do you find all the amazing things to restore? Thank you, for your continued brilliance.
This item was a customer :) Thanks Tim :) Radek
Ah yes, we used them up to the mid to late 70s, the one you rebuilt was for the shore line, they make another that fit in the bed of a truck, 55 gal. that sprayed the camp grounds, summer job, I should have died long ago, Great Job, you guys are keeping history alive...
Wow, thank you for your story John Patrick .
The writing on the disperser let me think that these devise once was used in the military to protect field camps from all kinds of nasty insects... Awesome work as always and an interesting piece of history. 😃
🤔😉Thanks :)
Nice restoration as usual. Greetings from South Africa
Thank you :)
Another beautiful restoration. Thanks again for showing us
It is a hand cranked DDT pesticide blower. the DDT pesticide powder was placed into the large cylinder and metered into the blower unit on the left hand side, it was as lethal for the operator as the insects, just much slower!
Another amazing restoration, looks awesome!👍👍👊
Gracias...por este muy esperado video...muchos exitos y bendiciones...saludos desde Peru
I love this channel for All the different things you restore! I am sure you will find a safe pesticide to use in this restored beauty!
Great Work as Always!!!
I've seen pictures of those before. Never seen one working before. Too cool.
Thank you David :) Radek
No insects anywhere in a building were these are stored. Even a small amount of DDT will keep a who area clear. Deadly stuff. 👍👍💓
Great job on this one. Very faithful restoration.
Kedves Veronika és Radek! Hát Radek teli vagy meglepetésekkel. Tudtam, hogy van ilyen gép, eszköz. De még nem láttam. Köszönöm! Üdvözlettel: Zoltán
What a great demonstration of the finished product!! Impressive restoration. I find it interesting that Sigma Pumpy is still in the agricultural business.
Are-you a magician? You always make a beautiful job!👍😀
DDT powder blower applicator? The stirrer bar to aerate the powder and hand cranked impeller for blowing it out. Nasty stuff. Mega thumbs up for using ecological disposal. Great job.
Yes, I agree, but it was part of our history and we will not change it.
Excelent job!! Hug from Brazil!!
Wonderful job on getting that thing clean. Just goes to show how much poison was sprayed on the food we eat and in the environment in general. Looks beautiful now.
Yes, I agree, thank you
WAS sprayed!! Don't talk in the past. It's even worse today. Have you looked at the soil of an agricultural farm. I did a few years back. The soil was dead. Things are still sprayed on our food, it's expensive, and poisonous, and or genetically modified, but like Africa we have no say. We are dealing with big pharma now. The stuff they use now combined with genetic modification is probably far worse than DDT.
Not only the clean which took forever on this one .. what a load of work. But the repair job on the blade to replace the missing vane was wonderfully done.
Hello Radek beautiful restoration professionally restored i lake the demonstration of the finished product good job well done
The things you build are amazing restores. Awesome stuff!! It turned out gorgeous and your videos are very relaxing
Great job on restoring
Thank you so much Stacey :) Radek
Thank you, fascinating restoration process and I did not expect to receive a history lesson also. Glad you used flour at the end to demonstrate its' use. Subscribed!
Great restoration
It is absolutely insane that people used to spread that stuff by hand!! So many lives altered because of one chemical. And we ate the food it was sprayed on! Great restoration as always.
Very impressive. Excellent restoration.
Radek: Veronika, I need the plastic film for my DDT spreader project.
Veronika: Here, keep it. I don't want it back!
Simplesmente, maravilhoso. Mais uma vez parabéns. 👏👏👏
Great job!! As always!
Oh my! Just imagine the cupcakes we could dust.. Gorgeous work as always.
That was Brilliant friend please do more, Stay Safe and have a nice day !!!.
Thank you so much Brian :) Radek
I have a few of these in my garage from my family's farm. I always wondered what the residue inside was, Now I know!!
Thank you! I didn't know this device, but I was guessing a little. Another beautiful job it is with great cleanliness bravo!😀👏👏

The bugs loved you for a flour helping?
Nice restoration, well done
Bonjours Très très belle restauration encore une belle découverte !j'adore
Merci beaucoup Patrick :) Radek
Excellent restoration! Wow didn't know all that about the history! Thanks for sharing! I guess now a days it could be used for distributing Diatomaceous Earth on garden plants as a pesticide and completely safe to use.
Good idea, thank you Debra :)
Amazing work 👏 🙌
In the picture at 17:07, it looks like he's spraying a swampy area for mosquitos.
Yes, it is possible, the use was great then. But the danger was not known :(
What surprises me is that people didn't relate the ideas that if DDT KILLS bugs DEAD on contact - that it JUST MIGHT NOT be GOOD for people! It's good that they FINALLY did, though. It's always a good reminder of how things were done in the past. We have to remember both the good and the bad of the past so we don't make the same mistakes again.
Yes, that's exactly Norm, that's why I did it. Today it is on display in the museum as a reminder of the bad of the past.
It is a great pleasure to look at golden hands and patience. Thanks for the video👍👍👍🏆🏆🏆👑👑👑👏👏👏😊
I thank you Lara :) Radek
krásná renovace, like
Aquí en Mexico se le llama “espolvoreadora” de usa para fumigar o para distribuir granos para la siembra . Saludos 👋🏻😃
With DDT? I thought it was banned in all countries
Interesting device and a complex restoration due to the hazardous chemical residue. Radek, glad you finally finished seeding that field. 👍
Give it to Veronica for sausage making and dough making!
I hope you don't get sick from the ddt, mate. I know you would have taken precautions while restoring this gadget. I still can't help being concerned. 😟😟😟🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Are you serious? What utter nonsense.
@@alexandermenzies9954 So you're saying DDT isn't toxic?
Using benzene was far worse.
Well, to be honest, this renovation has been considered for a long time. I didn't find anyone to advise me on cleaning up DDT. Fortunately, the gasoline worked. Thank you Cathy :) Radek
@@rickdaniel1707 It's not benzene (C6H6) it's benzin which is what a lot of European countries call gasoline or petrol. Nothing to do with benzene.
Yes, in my younger days before DDT was banned, i had a smaller version of a similar sprayer. DDT was good stuff but only one problem, it was deadly. It was found to cause the Great Eagle eggs to be crushed easily, the USA just about lost all of our national birds. It's a wonder I'm still alive. What do they say? Live and learn.
Great restoration.

Super robota Radek wykonanie perfekt pozdrawiam serdecznie miłego dnia like
Excellent job, also the fabrication of the broken part of the fan was impressive.
Did anybody else feel sorry for the ants or whatever they were? Did they live in that drum and survive the powder inside? Or were they interested, went there and died eating that stuff? Oh and a very good and interesting restauration this was! Love it.
Too bad i can give only one thumbs up. A amazing restauration again Radek, you can be proud of yourself. You always amaze me with the special items you have and i am glad you always show us what the use of them is. I enjoyed it very much my friend, thank you. 👌👏👍
Toujours des objets bizarre mais superbe restauration beaucoup de plaisir à voir les vidéos merci
Amazing machine. Can you imagine spraying DDT around with that thing? Scary.
And yet it was intended for DDT spraying in the past :(
Nice and thank you for the information about DDT.
Thankyou so much for not just repairing stuff but for showing how it works too makes your vids so satisfying to watch hope your proud :) good work :) no bs :D
Thank you we are pleased :)
That was amazing, you are such an artist! I always learn something from your videos, sort of a little delight for the week. Thank you so much!
Very nice restoration. Thank you
That's crazy that people used that.... Just not knowing what they were exposed to.... But you always do a great job.. Thank you.
It's a device for manual spreading of DDT powder. It was mostly used in the agricultural sector from 1950 till 1970.
Yes, exactly .
Another awesome reno.
Thanks Alan :)
I didn't even knew what it was, but once it came to life, I did.

Man that DDT is really nasty stuff...in this case there was no need to test for lead paint, it would be the less harmful stuff present...
