This was all about the Troubles in Northern Ireland and remembering those lost. Beautiful yet haunting and it got to No 1 in the UK and Ireland.
What was going on in Ireland at that time? I always wondered about what this masterpiece is about
@EM Cash This beautiful haunting song is about the 'Troubles' or de facto civil war in Northern Ireland that lasted from 1969 to approx 1994. Thankfully things are a lot better now if still far from ideal.
My family is one he is calling for to come home, brings me to tears still
@@Eskay1206 So sorry to hear this. Very powerful message in this song.
This moron has no fucking idea what the song is about, nor does he have a fucking clue about music
i am a n.ireland veteran brings a tear to the eye
A monument of music in Simple Minds' garden.
I returned to Belfast with this song in my head. What a diference in recent yrs to my life their in the 1980s. This song is so amazing for that reason. Long live Northern Ireland x.
The tune of this song is “She moved through the fair”. I LOVE this song.
The historic weight of this song is a thing you are not feeling, but we in Europe are more connected to our history so that is what makes this song epic
He's not feeling it because he is a fucking moron. His analysis is hilarious. He actually believes in the garbage he spews out.
Jim Kerr: the great music communicator.
Elton John is THE master storytelling songwriter - Martin Gore the wonderful subject lyricist.
But Jim Kerr has a gift for conveying great messages in his team's music.
And Simple Minds are a great team, for sure. More Simple Minds music please!
Simple minds... One of m'y favourites... Great voice, close to Bono's... Great energy, and the Scott's spirit...
better than U2 I never thought it was a contest personally
One of the best bands I've ever seen live in '84. Fabulous!
No songs have intros anywhere close to this great tune anymore!
I love the irish folk tune feeling and that tin whistle, i absolutely love it. Thanx Simple Minds for a great song.❤
Charlie Burchill is one of the most underrated guitarists of all times!! Nobody ever speaks of him yet he creates the most amazing soundscapes. Btw, if you liked this, you should listen to their 'Live in the City of Light' album. Absolutely amazing!
Thank for being patient Derek - NOT everyone is. Worth the Wait!
I loved so much watching your reaction Dereck, thank you!!! I'm still today in awe at the power and message within the song, and just adore Jim Kerr's vocals, violin, tin whistle and synths in the opening verses and still get chills from the drums kicking in to begin that heaps epic 2nd half of the song!!!
The band's producer had suggested that they record something influenced by folk music and "Belfast Child" was written in late 1987 with music based on "She Moved Through The Fair" and the lyrics inspired by the IRA bombing in Enniskillen during a Rememberence Day ceremony for the British military (8 November 1987), killing 11 people. Upon release Simple Minds weren't confident at how well the public would respond to the song but it ended up being one of their biggest hits! For some years they didn't play "Belfast Child" live due to the somewhat improved situation in Northern Ireland but have recently started playing it again.
'This is your land'est superbe également
Hi Derek this is just my opinion.
When they released this it was a seminal moment when SIMPLE MINDS screemed welcome to our music. Anyone in the UK with a top 20 playlist has this.
I've seen them twice before the pandemic & just as good now as they were then.
Thanks for bringing back the memories.
Un de mes groupes préférés. Merci beaucoup .
Thanks for going back to Simple Minds! You have yet to react to the obligatory "Don't You", and there are many other gems by this once legendary band.
I've already sent him a few songs from that wonderful band! And they're amazing live too!
And still touring and releasing albums, they will release their new one very soon. I absolutely loved their 2018 album Walk Between Worlds.
Just like heaven... pure soûl pure gold for ears...Irlande forever
One of the best songs of all time
Dereck !) i love your "ohhhhhhhhhh" on 03:08 🤩 Simple Minds if my favorite music band!!!!!
Easily their best song for me. Got a little overcast by Zombie by the Cranberries. But this is a great song on the same theme. Scotland understood the Irish struggle. Shared history so not unusual that a Scottish band would create such a heartfelt song.
I’m watching from NI. This song was one of the reasons we came back
Hold on to your bannanas my friends 😂 You're so funny! 😂
Thank you! They were so great! Great live band! They made so good new wave songs
Lisa Germano is the violin player. Check out her solo work.
There is so much symbolism in the music instruments used in this song - the penny whistle an irish instrument and the drums played by the child alluding to those of rhe marching bands of the sectarian organisation of the protestants and catholics.
Oh I remember this song. Thanks for reacting.
The live version of this with Sinead O Connor from "A Night at the Proms" is beyond belief.
Bombastic! So fantastic!❤
Awesome song
My top 5 hit of the '80s. ❤️
Amazing stuff!
I saw Simple Minds two times.
In 1989, "Belfast Child" wasn't programed on the American radios. And , I don't know why.
Today , unfortunately , there are numerous troubles , in Ireland , between catholic and protestant people. It's too sad !
streets fighting years album 1989 very good song and album as well !!
Qué buen tema de este grupazo !
Hello *Dereck* and friends,
2 suggestions about *Simple Minds* if one day or another, you think to react again to this so prolific Scottish band of the 80s.
- *"Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me"* (version live 2013 on *DemonMusicGroup* YT Channel) - I think I remember you reacted on the official clip.
- *"Simple Minds - Mandela Day"* (Remastered in HD on *Simple Minds* YT channel).
Peace, folks. ☮🤗
I'm not sure you are talking about simple minds or suggesting another group but simp!e minds are scottish.
@@tracyconnor6166 Hello,
Yes, you're right; I had U2 in my head simultaneously. Thanks for letting me know; I corrected it.
Have a pleasant day.
❣my prefer of SM with "Mandela day". What a song, what a voice.
Simple minds- Don't you forget about me great song.
My city ❤
Try “See The Lights”
Do more Irish music…
Hi Dereck i propose you to discover "Sign of the times" by The Belles Stars (1983)
The worst thing is that this is so relevant even now , We had the NI agreement right up until Brexit , now it is all up in the air again
Exactly and now NATO is trying to eat the South.
Hi derek can you put the subtitle?
How about The The?
are they the dudes that sing uncertain smile? if so i love that song 😂
@@johndoe-jr7gc yes, they are
Dereck - as most Americans - doesn't know anything about the troubles in Northern Ireland. Anyways - may the troubles never come back again!
