Thank you for this video my 2019 fusion gave me a p0496. I already changed the purge valve and the wirings attached to it. Code still came back so now I’m going to replace the canister and solenoid with it. If that still doesn’t fix it then I’ll check the fuel pressure sensor last.

Same issue with my 2015 Chevy Cruze
How did changing the canister vent solenoid go?

Fuel pressure sensor would have been a costly repair because it’s located on the fuel pump inside the fuel tank.
Out of desperation I replaced my 30 day old purge valve again and the new one seems to work fine and no more codes.
I would really check your purge valve and make sure it is only allowing air to flow through in one direction and not both. It’s the cheaper and easier fix but was still frustrating to find a brand new part already went bad. Good luck

Hi guys so I did not change the canister or solenoid. I ended up changing the upstream oxygen sensor and the engine light went away same day on its own afterwards.

Any harm done if you keep running the vehicle if the pressure sensor is faulty?

how about newer vehicles with no gas cap at all?

The new capless no gas systems have a flap that needs to seal.

So this is the same as P0497? I had this one (P0496) and P0455. I Replaced the purge valve and fixed the hose going to it (had slit eat end).
Now I’m only getting the P0497. I’m thinking the vent valve in canister is stuck open.
We did a smoke test and it was coming out of the rear right fender well. But I can’t remember if we did it with the car off and running. If the car is off with the smoke, be coming out because the valve is open and if it’s running, should it be closed at idle?

The vent valve in the charcoal canister is normally open and closes when power is applied. It can vary, but the computer often closes it for testing after the vehicle is off for 1-2 hours. It is best to use a scan tool to close it when testing.

@@HVAC_Mechanic yeah i know but it’s a Mercedes Benz. I can’t buy one or find anyone who can run all the tests/sensors/valves. Why did I get low, purge flow and high, purge flow codes? Also, small leak and large leak codes? 🤔 but after replacing the purge valve, I’m only getting the P0497. Low purge. Dirty or clogged canister? Should I just clean it out? Clean the sponge/fet etc? What will help my low/rough idle? That’s what I’m trying to fix. I’ve seen that if the purge solenoid on the canister doesn’t close to cause combustion, it will cause a low, rough idle 🤷‍♂️
It only needs to go up .500-.1000 rpm to be completely smooth. It’s idling just around 1050 instead of 1200/1300 (1250 is my target) 🤷‍♂️ Tia

When is the vent valve opened? Is it only while engine is running ?

    • @HVAC_Mechanic

It can vary, but usually 5-15 minutes after the engine is started the computer sends a signal to open.
