Buick Enclave: P0496 EVAP Flow During a Non-Purge Condition
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 авг 2024
- In this video I bring you along as I diagnose and fix the classic P0496 that seems to plague these Buick Enclaves and Chevy Traverse's. A failed purge solenoid is very common on these and very easy to test right from the drivers seat using the scan tool. -Enjoy!

Eric was under 200K subscribers when I joined, and now at 650K. And still the same, down to earth honest technician. Hands down one of THE best channels on RUclips. Thanks for the content, sir!
The best in my opinion. I remember when he started making videos Eric the car guy was dominating. Now Eric O gets like 200k plus viewers a video and Eric the car guy gets like 45k. Scanner Danner is good but Eric o is more entertaining .
funny enough, I just finished watching one of his videos from 2016 where he upgraded the exhaust on a Vette. Then seen this video was up. First thing I thought is he hasn't changed at all from then to now. Love this channel!
@@ryanalexander984 I learn from 'em all. They are all good dudes who know their stuff.
I ran across his channel alittle over a year ago and I am telling you I have never spent sooo many hours watching anyone's channel more than SMA, as a retired auto mechanic I learn something new just about everytime, I'm a S.M.A Fan 😎👍🏾
@@ryanalexander984 Eric the guy is not in the same league as Eric O. Actually, I think he is kind of hack. Scanner Danner is very good as well but I am with you, Eric O. just comes across as the "good guy" down the block you can count on.
I am a 50 year old woman, and do not know anything about a car, and yetI installed the valve BY MYSELF...ALL BECAUSE OF YOU...THANK YOU!!!!
Hmm.. you should have the most likes. Good for you.
I appreciate you making this channel. You get to the point while being entertaining and not trying to emulate a "reality TV show" and being a clown. Good luck to you and your family this year, sir.
Couldn't have put your statement any better,JUST THE FACTS and no sugar coating!
I'm just happy he doesn't sound like Kermit the frog, as so many car reviewers seem to!
What do you mean? I thought if Eric didn't change the part in time HE WAS GONNA LOSE THE SHOP!!!!!! 😀😀😀
@@Martin_from_SC The fake drama is real! Wait....what?! "Eric races against time outdoors in bitter winter weather to fix a Chevy before the world ends!"
Agree 100%
It's nice that GM designs a small workbench on the front of the engine bay for all your tools, bolts, and parts needed to repair stuff.
A friend purchased the big dollar Buick Enclave when they first came out circa 2011-12. He took delivery late in the evening and the following morning driving to work, it started bucking and lurching, then dead stopped. He hit the On-Star button, to be greeted by an operator needing information from him, as the dealer hadn't forwarded any owner info from the late evening delivery.
The operator was very professional and helpful, however my friend was very ticked that this brand new vehicle chit the bed. He offered up a reason why GM installed On-Star on the vehicle, that they knew it was going to break down and require help.
GM had to send the technician that built the transmission as it was the first failure on the new platform and there were no spare transmissions available for replacement.
Good to see a 'driveway' fix in the snow. Makes me feel at home.
it is nice to see that a guy who learned how to fix cars with points and hand chokes can still make some repairs like this one. i like that you used the diagnostic tool we had to use when i was young...a vacuum gauge!
I have had to replace the EVAP Purge Solenoid twice on my Traverse and have only owned it for a couple years. Great video as always! Thanks, SMA!
Get ready for oil control solenoids, chains, and sprockets.
@@Shirkatron yeah it's a piece of shit car.
Did you replace it with a dorman brand purge solenoid?
@@mikesabin8568 Better get a duralast
Same on my Enclave. Known junk.
Ive been a tech for 30 years and i find talking your way through tough issues helps although the other techs think im nuts sometimes especially when i answer myself. great vids man. keep up the good work
As long as you're not losing arguments to yourself, your good, lol
Talking to yourself is the only way to have an intelligent conversation, somedays.
I find myself saying "that's your problem lady" "not a sponsor" and "test don't guess" all of the time
Never a dull moment, when I get a notification that MR. O is at it again... making the world a better place one car at a time....
Concerns = Awesome channel and video!!
Questions = None!
Awaiting the next exciting episode!
I work with vehicles for a living (almost 40 years) and still can’t wait for the next video to come up - The most honest and most logic thinking tech out there - I wish you were closer - I’d be able to get you a lot of business!!!
Appreciate all these videos and all the work you do to make them. You've taught me more in these videos than I've ever learned from anyone in person.
Another great, informative video Eric! It may be 16 degrees outside here in upstate NY, but I'm trapped inside recovering from the Rona and watching RUclips. Thanks for always putting up good, well informed videos. It's always good to see someone local to me representing the southern tier of New York with class! Thanks again and good luck to all of the "O's" this new year!
Same here. I'm supposed to replace a fuel line on my truck. Already pulled the bed. Now I'm in bed. Great start to 22.
@@alex1949 sorry to hear it bud, I started feeling like crap Christmas night and I've got a snowplow half mounted on my truck. I hope you feel better soon and lets pray for no snow till I'm going again
@@davidsoutar8508 You got it. No snow. I'm just a couple of days in, so I'm at the beginning. My wife is a nurse to boot, so she checks up on me. Never binged on RUclips so much!
As a GM tech, we replace these so much they finally came out with a special coverage now for these traverse/enclave. This one was probably covered. Nice fix none the less 👍👍
Can you explain how I go about this?
@@jrich6902 last 8 of the VIN and I can use the GM's investigator tool to see if your vehicle has coverage for purge the solenoid. If it is covered and you do have the code you'd have to go to the dealer they would check for leaks and if indeed your purge has failed they would replace at no cost.
Thanks for your video. I try to do most of my own repairs but vehicles are getting so technical and more difficult to work on but this was a simple repair. You probably saved me a couple hundred bucks because of not having to go to the shop and a couple days without my vehicle.
If you want to know how to troubleshoot a problem, these videos are for you. No annoying music, or flutter. When he replaces a part, it's a fix. This guy isn't guessing. That's why I watch his videos. Great personality to, not boring & very entertaining.
Thank you for this informative video. Great step by step explanation on how to replace the valve. Just bought one at the dealership and installed it myself. Like a charm. Great work.
Cheers from Toronto! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🍺🇨🇦👍
"What should we be seeing?" That's the golden question. Many thanks as always.
Rainman Ray mentioned you in a video. He's another good mechanic who does amazing work. He's in Florida and complains about a little rust. LOL
I had to watch SMA to get motivated to work on my snowblower. Best wishes in the new year to the O family and SMA most eligible bachelor.
Nothing motivates you better than a big snowstorm!
Thanks the the lesson, made it easy to replace the old evap.
I'm glad you buy them snap-on tools I've seen you use I really do appreciate it because I work there. I watch your channel live it's classic TV lol . Thanks and keep it up and I'll keep watching you fix every one's problems.
Money light for Eric O = our entertainment. Happy new year
Thank you my light just came on for this.
Happy New Year, Eric O. Hope you enjoyed your time off. And, as importantly, glad you're back and providing more videos. Whether it's a life lesson or a mechanical process - sometimes both - I always learn something from you.
Guy I really appreciate your help in this video cause I thought I would have to take to the dealership and I know they was going to kick me in the rear but I found that the part was cheaper than the people said they said $200.00 and by me going to the part store the part was only just $52.00 so you blessed me with that knowledge again Thanks
I’ve been a subscriber since I think you had around 40,000k and the amount of purge solenoids for a GM product is surprising. No matter what year.
Happy New Year to you all!
What was the time when air valves like that had some type of inline filter.
I don't always like videos but when SMA comes up I like it automatically before watching because I know it'll be good
Lol Rain Man said very good thing about you. Both you guys are very good Technicians.
Being a parts guy I can tell you we sell a TON of these things. Mr O ain't kidding when he says these are common!!
This mech is so cool, he sounds like Red Green, appreciate the video support!
I greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us. Thank you sir.
dont ever get sponsored. we love you just the way you are. straight to the point.
I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos. Always definitely click on them when it’s a Silverado. Much more informative and entertaining then Eric the car guy.
Thank you so very much for showing those step-by-step how easy not very difficult it is to work on your car when you know exactly what is wrong you’ve diagnosed it thank you for those nice step by step instructions God bless love you guys bye-bye
Eric, thank you for using the actron reader. A lot of us don’t have the expensive scanners and wonder how far can we diagnose a problem using simple pieces of test equipment. Have a great and happy new year to you and your family.
Eric is the best and reminds me of myself many years ago but I to wish sometimes he would do a few diagnostics using more common DIY tools and equipment. That said, I must confess I would loath doing this knowing that all the tools are right there to make the job a whole lot easier. 🤔
Very entertaining and informative! Great explanation on diagnosis and verification.
Awesome videos; learned so much. Don't be afraid to do duplicate videos of the same problems, I forget so easily. I especially like the technical based videos with the scope.
Excellent video. Taught me how to change part in under 10 minutes. “If I can do it, you can do it!”
You are the best. I LOVE that you use a tripod when you can!
If I can do it , YOU can do it, great motivation 💪 👍
Doesn’t matter what they are I love your videos. I hit the thumbs before I even start watching. Up here in the Sierra Nevada’s in Northern Ca., 20 inches of snow the day after Christmas, no power now going on day 9. No work in my shop, no propane for the generator. Keep the videos coming.
You are the man Eric!
My day just isn't the same without watching Eric trace an electrical issue or fix a rusty beater. I've learned a lot watching Eric trace electrical gremlins. Many of the repairs I've seen him fix would have had other mechanics screaming for mercy.
Hope you, Mrs O & the rest of the family had a great festive keep the videos coming all the best fae Scotland 👍
We're traveling for Christmas and we got 1500 miles away before our check engine light came on. This is the exact issue and I think we can 100% take care of it. Thank you for this!
Happy New Year to you and your family! Love your videos. I am an old ford tech. Semi retired now after 38 years. Arthritis took it's toll on me so I don't wrench as much these days. But still have the passion.
I always enjoy your straight forward diagnosis with some common sense. Wish that other auto shops would do the same (not mentioning any names). Your videos has been helping me diagnose and fix my 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 dually 2wd . Thank you Sir
I am always in awe of your expertise. it makes me sad i didn't have you as an instructor years ago.
Great job Eric
Ive done this same repair many times on the traverse/enclave/acadia very very common thanks for the vid
Always informative and entertaining. Big fan of the channel Mr. O!
this guy is doing God's work, helping people work on their own cars
It's amazing how fast people work when its freezing cold outside, fastest repair I've ever seen you do!!!!!!! 🤣😂😆
Hi Eric . It’s nice to have a week off . You will get back into the routine no doubt . Nice quick fix . I heard your say about cold fingers . I have the same problem .its the old arthritis .
Great reporting Eric .enjoy your comments every time. Have learned quite a bit from you over the years. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Be well be safe
I enjoyed watching the snow flakes. Not seen very often in southeast Louisiana.
Hallo Eric, greetings from Germany ! All my best wishings for 2022 for you and your lovely family, I hope you enjoyed some days off while season's days and new year. I'm looking forward to watch your educating and entertaining videos !! Michael
Eric it is good to see you back, one of the first things i do when i turn on the computer is to see what You & Pine Hollow has posted I learn so much.
Hers’s wishing you, Mrs O, and the whole GANG, the best year in 2022!!
Could they possibly have covered up more of the engine bay with "beauty covers" and vanity trim? Geez Louise, Buick, regular customers that buy Buicks don't even know where the hood latch is. Give the mechanics a break!
Keep up the good work, Eric.
Those Covers serve a purpose, they are there to scare people from working on their own cars, and take them back to the dealer
@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 The Traverse looks exactly the same under the hood. sooo much plastic
I believe it’s all about noise reduction. Quietness is Buicks biggest (only?) selling point, and the Enclave is indeed one of the quietest and smoothest vehicles I’ve been in.
@@joshuarodrique2096
No, it is about Intimidation. I have those covers on one of my Cadillacs.

First of all a happy and healthy New Year to you and your family . Second , lots of gravy and not too many headaches.
May you and the Mrs. Have a great year.
I have the same type actron code reader. It was one of the first readers I ever bought and has shockingly outlasted my much nicer one. My kocked it off my stand and it landed in a oil tub with diff fluid and sat overnight and somehow it still worked. Keep up the great vids
That might be the best endorsement ever for a piece of shop equipment. Child-proof *and* oil-proof!
Let it snow! Blessing new Year SOUHT MAIN AUTO
Thank you this video !! Just found same issue with 2012 enclave. Stuck open when electrical disconnected. Thank you. Following you now
Happy Newyear to you all
Great to see you again in 2022. You are fun to watch and it is great to see Mrs. O now and then. I hope you have all of the best in the new year. This is the first time I have seen you working in the snow.
Eric O is honest & so the gods bless him & his family!
Thanks for the shop lesson.
Thank you so much. You saved me a few bucks, that's for sure!
First repair I ever did on my 2011 Ford Escape was exactly this. Except it took me a month to figure out and I thought I needed a fuel pump at first, but either way I got it done! haha
Hey! I have that Actron. I love that thing. It's saved me a bunch of times from bringing the car to the shop for smaller problems. Misfires from coils, plugs and whatnot.
Happy New Year to you, Mrs O and yer extended families, all the way from Bonnie Scotland!
That's my idea of torquing things to spec😉 I do it no different 🤣
Quality content. Thank you Eric.
I like the difficult situations that Eric O. get's himself into. Working out in the cold, he's probably done this job a hundred times knowingly the right tools to take out with him. Just one darn good mechanic, only wish he lived closer to me.
Same thing happened to my friends 2015 Camaro. Bought a new $30 AC Delco purge solenoid from Amazon, and fixed the issue
Thanks for helping us
missed you guys happy new year keep up the great work
Great video, fast fix! I was waiting to hear him say “this is fresh from another shop who couldn’t figure her out!” LOL
Thank you for the great videos Eric O
Welcome back Eric. You were missed. Happy New Year.
Hey Mr.O thanks for the video! My 2016 Chevy Traverse AWD has the same code however I did what you did and smacked it with a ball Peen hammer and now the part works it was stuck! So now I'm on my way to the local GM dealership to get me that part. Thanks a lot!!
Fast fix so cool 😎
Good work Mr. O. I don't envy you working out in the cold. Take care.
Eric, hope you and Family enjoyed the holidays. Sorry to see you out in the cold. Kinda takes the fun out of it. Thanks for Sharing!
Happy New year Mr and Mrs O hope 2022 brings you luck and happiness, same goes for all of the youtube community 😁
When the bays are full, working outside in the cold and snow reminds me of my youth in my home town of Buffalo.
You ain’t no pansy Eric you’re more of a strong daffodil, we all look forward to seeing the daffodil it’s a sign better weather and times are ahead
Damn that was a quick upload, awesome.
Wow your a great mechanic
Happy New Year Mr. O. To you and the fam-bam.
Thanks Dr. O!
Eric, I have a tip for you, unless you already have heard it! If you ever have to tighten a stranded wire around a screw, twist the wire backwards or counter-clockwise, than the screw will twist the wire in the same direction, and the wire will not un-reveal or become loose over time! I'm sharing this cause I just want my name metioned on your show! thanks for you channel! scooter...
worked like a charm, thanks so much
Any video is a good video in my book . I don’t care if your changing a battery, I’m watching it !!!!!!! WHATS UP ERIC,!!!!
Your weather sounds like it was here in NW Arkansas for Christmas. 70s-80s for Christmas Day, 12 on New Year's and a bit of snow. Happy new year - looking forward to all your content this time around the sun; best wishes to you and yours!
welcome back Eric , thanks for all the videos you make all year while trying to run a business . I appreciate your efforts , Happy New Year to you and your Family
And very good at what he does too. Great people there at SMA
Nothing that easy to fix ever happened to my 2013 Enclave. Best day of my life was trading it in! One of the climate doors nearly caused me to bleed out.
