      Crows, Magpies, and their ilk - talk to them, get to know them, and if you are gentle and calm - they will become comfortable around you, and eventually you might just be able to experience such. Just be respectful: They are wild beings, they are meant to be free - but that doesn't stop you from getting to know them.

      I've found a lot of birds like head rubs/massages. I suspect this is because unless they have a partner to go through their feathers for them, they are left only able to use their own feet to tend to their head feathers and this is usually quite a stretch for them.

    Fable is just the best ❤ i volunteer at a owl sanctuary and have been making a friend out of the 1 of the 2 ravens they have. He is getting more relaxed with me every time i see him. The female is slowly getting better but she is taking alot longer. They are amazing bird and also very cheeky they both have a thing for undoing my laces just as im about to go.

    As a young boy growing up in East Sussex, I was always fascinated by the ornithological world. Especially the birds of prey. I was lucky enough to befriend some people from the Sussex Falconry Centre and had the great experience of learning the very basics of falconry. My life took me on a different route and now as a middle aged guy am living in the North of Germany. I would like to express my thanks to your great channel here on RUclips. I watch all the vids and it makes me feel like that young guy again who once had a dream of becoming a falconer. I envy the life you lead but am very grateful for the fact you share it with us. Many regards from myself and that younger boy within.

      Grew up like that in Northern Sweden we had a bird lake and a large field right outside our house. There were lots of northern lapwing, crane, swans and canada goose and on ocassion raptors. One summer we had a pair of northern goshawk nest in our neighbours tree to the dismay of the lapwings.

    The Cooper's hawks and crows where I live have a great relationship. They tolerate each other. When young Cooper's learn to hunt, it gets exciting. Not only do they chase, they like to test their skills by being chased.

    So neat. Love the footage in your yard. ♥️ It’s like watching a caper - & finding out why they’re there & what they’re up to - as part of the fun (usually a group feeding of some kind- but always interesting to find out why they were there). Who needs television when you can look at that!
    We got to witness a similar situation, just last week. A new deer carcass in the field was being observed by 7 eagles, at least 15 ravens, and a few red tailed hawks. The exchanges between them all were very interesting. My son and I had a great time watching through our binoculars and making up subtext and voices to fit the various attitudes of the birds we watched. As you say- the ravens were dishing it out to the eagles now and then. In turn the eagles took a lot of bullying. Amazing flying displays at times. The ravens and their dogfighting arial acrobatics were something to witness.
    How fortunate we are to see these amazing birds doing what they do best so close to our homes. Being next door to calving fields this time of year- always brings a lot of interesting animals to the neighborhood. 🙌🏼♥️
    Thank you for inspiring us to pay closer attention to what’s happening outside our very windows. We have done concluded a bird science unit recently, chosen by my son & inspired by your enthusiasm for learning & teaching about birds! ♥️

    We went to the Tower of London a few weeks ago and what I couldn’t get over was how BIG the ravens were! I noticed their wings on one side had been clipped to prevent them from flying away - does Fable have her wings clipped?

    • @Drac0n0id
      @Drac0n0id 2 года назад +5

      In an older video I think she mentioned she lets fable go fly around during the day sometimes. So probably not, fable just knows where home is.

    • @wingsandwildlands
      @wingsandwildlands  2 года назад +31

      Fable is not clipped and never has been.
      The tower ravens live in a very different environment to fable with a lot more human dangers like vehicles which could be of real iissue to them if they ventured too far. I can understand why they have a clipped wing feathers. If you're wondering about clipping, it doesnt hurt them as it the feather that is cut not the skin of the wing. And they moult every year, so there's regular chance for feathers to regrow again. Just like our hair. Hope that helps. 😊

    • @skepticalbadger
      @skepticalbadger 2 года назад +2

      @@wingsandwildlands The Ravenmaster had been gradually reducing the amount of clipping. At one point they were flying freely. Unfortunately one of the birds went missing, so I don't know if he's reverted to clipping or not.

    I first started my love affair with corvids when I lived on the edge of a town in southern Norway around 12 or so years ago. On walks with my dogs I noticed some hooded crows had caught on to that the dogs got treats. Being immensely curious by nature myself, I started to nonchalantly “forgetting” treats where they (hooded crows) could easily get to them, usually on top of large branches. Rapidly we became friends and they would follow me home. Fast forward and they would come and knock on the windows when they where hungry (not to mention an array of other corvids and small birds). Since then, wherever I’ve lived, I have gotten to know the local murder and in particular the local pair(s) in summer. Done correctly it’s immensely fun and rewarding and I can only imagine your work is many times more that, Amy. Thanks for taking the time and bringing the magic and majesty of Corvids to the world. ❤

    From what I have seen, especially growing up in rural Yorkshire, corvids (especially ravens) are much more intelligent than most birds of prey, so that hanging around near kill sites is massively to thier advantage. I've seen kestrels in particular getting MASSIVELY cheesed off with ravens and rooks, as the latter in particular are so good at behaving co-operatively. This affords the observer some truly amusing moments. Such a pity we didn't have smartphone cameras in those days. Anyone can see clearly how happy Fable is, especially in the end section of this lovely video.. And in SUCH good condition too! Nice one. 🌟👍

    Fable reminds me vividly of an old pet shop I used to visit when I was a teenager, they had a huge white house cockatoo that had free reign of the entire shop. if it decided that it liked you, it would fly to your shoulder, and stick its head in your face with its head feathers erect, begging for head scritches. On my second visit, it decided that I would be one of the honoured ones, and flew right to my head and got its headfeathers stuck in my glasses. Well, I stood there for two hours with this thing on my person, just giving this bird the attention it demanded.In the end it wouldnt leave me alone :P and on every subsequent visit it took the owner of the shop to pick the bird up and hold it while I made my escape. :P

We knew the place as favourite "digesting place" of the magnificent birds. We settled right before sunrise, and an osprey immediately came. Sat on his favourite tree, and dozed for a while. Then left for about five minutes to come back with a huge carp. Ate it carefully, leaving a lot to the crows and other scavengers, then started to digest. Four hours later the landlord came to check what we are doing there-the osprey woke up, flew away and we could reach a bit again. In the four hours he only changed his position twice, mainly turning around to warm up his other side (I guess-it was a cool april morning). We were half frozen, went numb and bored. But had a 32MB card full of "sleeping osprey" images :D

      Sounds awesome! Osprey are magnificent! I've only seen 2 in the 5 years I've lived here- I have a third floor balcony that overlooks a river, which I chose bc of the view. I see lots of bald eagles and tuvus, red tailed and Cooper's hawks, but only those 2 osprey. Both times they were flying directly toward me, enormous and beautiful!

    Wonderful to see you and Fable again Amy. I think that's the most affectionate I've seen her. She's a BOOP BOOP.

    Important to note the difference between Ravens and Crows. Nice footage showing just that.

      Yes quite a difference between the two and yet people regularly get mixed up. I am planning a corvid ID video at some point.

    Fable is absolutely stunning and beautiful. I’ve loved Ravens from my obsession of the Vikings and ever since I read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings many years ago. I’m currently reading the rest of Tolkien’s works from the first age. Some of my favourite characters were the intelligent ravens of Ravenhill near Erebor, could live to a great age and some could even speak Westron and were friendly with the Dwarves. Game of Thrones reignited my love for them. Thank you so much for the incredible work you do and the videos you post. You’re an incredible teacher.

    Don't let Fable out. She would unite them all and form a deadly Corvidwaffe Airwing. Then there would be worldwide weeping and gnashing of teeth.

    The amount of times I’ve seen Buzzards flying while being hassled by corvids and the one time a Buzzard was perched very calmly on a building in Canterbury city centre while Crows dive bombed it… amazing. I love Corvids (especially Australian Magpies… such totally playful clowns!) but I absolutely love to spot Buzzards. My favourite spot was 4 of them standing in a field in Kingston, Kent totally bedraggled from the rain waiting for worms to appear.

      Hate to be a buzzkill but Aussie magpies aren’t corvids…..crazy right??I know!!! Scientifically, Aussie magpies are related to butcher birds, not corvids. Behaviourally however, and I say this as someone who has had several pet magpies, they really behave like corvids and I agree…..cool birds.

      @@catzkeet4860 Thank you obviously I had no idea! I’ll look up butcher birds right now! Edit: Looked them up and yes you’re right of course. Australian magpies are still my most favourite clown birds and we need more clown birds here in the U.K. (Rooks are probably the clowniest but nowhere on a par with Aussie mags xx)
