  • The next time you fly a long-haul international flight, your thoughts might shift to the guzzling engines next to you. Thousands of liters of fuel are burned to fly yourself and tons of cargo around the world for a comparatively low ticket price. But how much fuel does a plane need? And what does it cost?

      What’s amazing is how little fuel these jets actually use. That’s why they like to use pounds when talking about jet fuel that way most will not notice how fuel efficient a jet engine is. Especially now with the new turbo fan jet engines. They’re so big that the majority of the thrust is bypass air. I’m curious to know if it’s equivalent to a v8 or v10 with fuel efficiency.

    • @jmhowlett
      @jmhowlett Год назад

      Actually after thinking about that thrust has always been majority from bypass air because the main reason for the combustion chamber was to move the hot gasses slowly through the last compressor blades which in turn spin the fan faster. So is thrust actually achieved from spent exhaust. I think not much.

    When you think about it, an average domestic flight in the US can cover at least 2 to 3 average of a New Yorker's monthly rent and at least 5 of the average American's monthly mortgage.
    Yet, if you add up the combined earnings of a fully booked domestic flight of 180 passengers (on average depending on aircraft type, airline, and seating configuration) at an average flat rate price of $350 round trip per passenger, one flight can make over $63,000. Obviously this changes with time of day, season, and etc, but airlines (at least the major ones) make serious cash, especially those that hold a monopoly on certain routes. Even if you factor in fuel cost, parking, landing, and other type of fees, they still make a profit. That may have changed during cold times, but not as much as you think...

    • @thebucketbus9370
      @thebucketbus9370 3 года назад

      Did you factor in purchase price and maintenance? Also fuel prices are extremely volatile. Many airlines buy fuel on speculation and sometimes they end up buying high.

    The BA 747 @ 3:24 never went supersonic, that is its ground speed. Mach number highly corelates with True airspeed (the speed of your aircraft through the air itself) but with other factors such as temperature and pressure. Supersonic flight is when your Mach number exceeds 1.0 if its below that you're not supersonic. So if the speed of the air is already 400kph and the speed of the aircraft through that air is 927kph thus totaling to 1327kph ground speed. Since the actual speed of the aircraft through the air is still 927kph or roughly Mach 0.8 in standard atmosphere its not supersonic.

      It did not break the sound barrier. The sound barrier is broken when the speed through the air is very high. This was not the case. The airspeed was "normal" and sub sonic. But they don't burn AvGas. Your point regarding fuel price is still accurate. Fuel in Europe does tend to be more than in the US.

      @@thebucketbus9370 oh, they don't? Well, what do they use then? I'm puzzled. I thought it was called avgas. Please clarify?

      @@ecclestonsangel AvGas is used in piston powered aircraft and is essentially the same fuel put in non-desiel automobiles.
      Turbine powered aircraft use Jet-A. Essentially kerosene.
