How Much Is A Plane In 2021? - Aircraft Prices & Why It Doesn't Matter

  • How much is an aircraft in 2020 and 2021? How much would you pay to lease or buy an aircraft today? Let's have a look.
    -----------------
In this video, I'm going to tell you how you can buy a commercial plane, how much it costs and why that may not be the best idea. There are some pretty crazy price differences and some planes are effectively worthless despite costing half a billion dollars - so buckle up and let us go shopping!
2020 is a great time for a fresh start, and if you were thinking of jumping into the airline game you can pick up some jets for a sweet deal. But how much do you need to put aside to buy an aircraft and which plane is the cheapest today?
Before you buy, it is worth pointing out how airlines themselves expand their fleets.
Here's the thing - most airlines don't actually own their aircraft. They do what is known as a lease buyback - buying the aircraft off airbus or Boeing and then selling it to a leasing firm. That way they can slowly pay off the plane and still have the capital for operations.
Leasing can be taken so much further. Airlines can also 'wet-lease' aircraft from a leasing firm, this means that they are hiring not only the plane, but the crew, fuel, and even airline certificate.
Technically at this level, there is nothing stopping you tomorrow launching an exciting route from Why, Arizona, USA to Whynot, North Carolina, USA
But what is the buying value of an aircraft? We see that airlines spend billions on airframes, but what is their order actually worth? Let us go from smallest to biggest with this year's figures. Again, this is not the list prices but what the aircraft is actually worth today.
The Airbus A220 series can be owned outright from - $29.7 - 35.3M, or leased for $205-270,000. The bigger A220-300 can be owned for $34.9 - 39.9M, and leased for $245-310,000 per month. Pretty good for a brand new 100 seater aircraft.
Next up, we have the short-haul Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 series. These aircraft are perfect for the domestic city to city trips like New York to Chicago or Melbourne to Sydney.
    B737-700 - $7.3 - 37.5M, $85-280,000
    B737-800 - $10.0 - 47.0M, $115-325,000
    B737-900ER - $18.8 - 49.0M, $200-340,000
The 737-900 is worth almost double the 737-800 and a better investment in the long run.
You will notice that the Boeing 737 MAX is absent despite having a list price of around 100 million.
    As for the airbus series:
    A319 - $6.5 - 36.5M, $75-280,000
    A320 - $2.0 - 43.8M, $60-320,000
    A321 - $10.1 - 51.2M, $130-370,000
Then we have the latest version of the A320, the neo series which is worth
    A320NEO - $40 - 49.5M, $295-350,000
A321XLR, which stands for ultra-long-range is can't be leased but only bought for US$142 million. This aircraft hasn't reached the market yet but is a game-changer as the longest range-single aisle narrowbody with 4,700 nautical miles of range.
That's it for short-haul aircraft, and now its time to look at the big boys. Widebody aircraft.
    A330-200 - $14.0 - 80.0M, $140-610,000
    A330-300 - $11.4 - 91.0M, $140-690,000
    B767-300ER - $3.2 - 35.5M, $90-330,000
Now for Boeing's new widebody line, the Dreamliner.
    B787-8 - $70.0 - 124.0M, $625-980,000
    B787-9 - $99.0 - 146.0, $820-1,100,000
The Boeing 787-10 has a list price of $338 million. Again, new aircraft means that there is less of a secondary market for the type.
Boeing's 777 series is still popular,
    B777-200ER - $12.0 - 44.0M, $200-350,000
    B777-300ER - $50.0 - 156.0M, $500-1,330,000
And the new soon to be flying in our skies 777X can be yours for the low price of $442 million US. Again, its likely airlines are paying half of that list price.
    .
    A350-900 - $104.5 - 154.0M, $800-1,100,000
The A350-1000 has a list price of $366 million and there isn't a secondhand market for the type yet.
    Jumbo Jet prices
Now, these aircraft are the biggest but may have the craziest prices.
    B747-400 - $3.3 - 9.6M, $90-180,000
Boeing 747-8i - $US400 million new, but there isn't much of a second-hand market today.
The Airbus A380 was worth new $444 million, the most expensive on this list, yet today - only $66 million.
    A380-800 - $66.0 - 220.0M, $520-1,80,000
Now, these numbers assume that there is a second-hand market, but in many cases like the A380, there simply are no buyers despite having a price of x for the market.
There are some aircraft missing from this list, but the market is so small for them that I've admitted them, like the A300 and the 757.
If you want to see how much a light aircraft under 100 seats and a freighter aircraft cost in 2020 today, then I've released a second video that you can see here - This market is a little different and I realized it would be a bit too much to fit into this video today. There is a complete list of the aircraft worth prices below.
Thanks for watching, leave a comment below or if you like, subscribe! See you next time.

Leasing companies account for about 40% of the aircraft worldwide. As airlines need cash, it'll go up to somewhere in the 50-55% range.

Appreciate you putting together this video. I just wanted to add considering there are Cessna Carvans or Q400s or Embrear 135s used for scheduled flights I would consider using the aircraft wake turbulence categories to classify the above aircraft e.g. light (B1900), medium (737), heavy (777), super (A380). But nonetheless thanks again for putting it together.

There are some pretty confusing numbers in this, for example you say the A350-900 can be bought for $104.5M-$154M, whereas the A350-1000 goes for more than double, $366M?

    • @FoundAndExplained
      @FoundAndExplained  3 года назад +9

Its how much they are worth on the open market. The A350-1000 is so rare that it can't be bought apart from by Airbus. The A350-900 there are plenty more on the market and thus there is a 2nd hand lease market emerging.
Its also complicated due to the fact that list prices for aircraft ($366 you mention) are only that - list prices. Airlines typically pay around 50%, so an A350-1000s real value is $170 million. $20 million more than the A350-900 :)

    • @CustardInc
      @CustardInc 3 года назад +2

@@FoundAndExplained ah right so it's a second hand price where available, new where not. Yeah that's pretty much the reason Airbus stopped publishing list prices a year or two ago, no one really paid it.
With leased aircraft, are you only counting the sale and leaseback aircraft you mentioned? Because lessors are often some of the biggest customers of new planes straight from the manufacturer, they'll order 10s or 100s of planes because they predict leasing demand.

    • @FoundAndExplained
      @FoundAndExplained  3 года назад +2

Well you would think the New York to London route would be good, but there is a problem.
Take for example Hi Fly who leased their A380 to Norwegian. They couldn't fly to New York because there was no gates! as in the airport was full of A380s (that need a special gate) and the plane couldn't land. So it was delayed six hours!

I really don’t understand even with the pandemic and the fuel burn, why isn’t there such a market for the A380. Each airline should atleast have a few at this price for their long haul routes.

nice video seeing how oil price and passenger trasnport get screwed by corona and grounding but production figure match adn price rest is market and know how, somehow Airbus is not going to colapse on whisltign price for rents as in airliners is stuff off production and years in market and poplurity, and if you think vtool can make mess on market figures just as hybirds do in car industry and german kind romp pomp electric is kind jump from 5-6 palns to plan something bigger 10-15 years in production, and just company click switch from 30% off year budget just research and inovation is doing time needed for pass for new things to pop and easier cheaperr minified models or self build models or desinger do stuff for larger companies and develop cost efective as know how easy rest is PC CAD design and data calc change to fit real and do even PC analyze thsi process cuts cost efeciently gets researcha and inovation new stuff and get them on right trace even a space x build corvette or transporter si not that far, or vtool gliders or vtool with turbo elecric prop or even airplanes on roational cocpits, or beluga vtool systems on self wing wheel and attach and detach combo in mid or large version vtool are like in tail and neck the combo pack could be separated adn pilot do like 3,5 persons like flying in star wars deisgn on screen talk and on blue wifi talk 24/7 and vtool are nothing but extended stronger arms on servo that spin turbo prop or jet engine so once like 4 engine mid and large packs get 6 engine 4 in vtool back pair is used as 1,2 engine in front and to aditional safety th vtool could even have soem arm wings like helicopters holders or small arm for rockets if think on vtool is bottom car spoiler only in oposite direction is very likely you figure out simplicity off design, so good and usefull that is not mater off price, doesnt need runaway and soem fuel burn more is miner due to simplicity off use eficiency off transport and joy at travel if it follow rules about noice and enginering even glider tube below airplane woudl extra increase airplane range so vtool kind behave like 4x4 in car industry, and if you hide front windshields like in cab 60ies design cars so front cab is slight expand and swallow in design windshields like in car industry and get some led light to heat glass and night drive and blue and green light you can even get avatar light systems liek new lux limo would een have in 2025 ambient in night drive totaly light and blossom why not, again why vait for all this..

If I had the money to buy brand new aircraft, I would take the A-220 in the small aircraft category. In the middle, although it's not really a medium sized aircraft, it's as close as you can get, the A-321 XLR.
In the larger wide bodied category, I would choose the A-350 as it's the best of the best in my opinion.
    There we go, job done!!!!

@@FoundAndExplained It's tough to know where to begin - there is so much misinformation and nonsense in your video it's laughable. But let's start with some basics: what do you think is the difference betwen value and price ? Are these prices adjusted for MX condition ? Are they lease encumbered prices ? Why such wide ranges ? New aircraft or used - if so how old ? Which variants ? Aircraft are not generic. If you were an equity investor in an aircraft I'm pretty sure you would be saying values matter. But don't mind me, I've only got 31 years experience in commercial aircraft leasing and financing.
