Rickles in real life was the exact opposite. It was his schtick in a time when people didnt take themselves so seriously. Being insulted by him was an HONOR lol. His Johnny Carson appearances are legendary. He sold out venues until the day he passed.

Being insulted by him became an honor due to him insulting Frank Sinatra who was in the audience early in his career. Something you did not due back in those days. Frank told all his friends they had to go to his show and be insulted by him. That is what made it an honor and established Don's career.

I told this story to another reactor to give you an idea of Don real personality. My parents saw him at a casino in the early 70's and he did an almost two hour show and picked on people all over the audience. As you saw he would ask them their names. When the show was ending he went back to each person that he picked on and called them by name and thanked them for allowing him to perform his act and bought each of them a magnum of champagne.

He was incredibly funny. I’m 64, and can remember seeing him on TV frequently as a kid. He was very kind offstage. I can remember seeing his true persona a few times in interviews. He was complimentary of people, and very kind. But, his wit onstage was gold. He passed away in 2017 shortly before his 91st birthday.

He always ended every show with a kind word and an uplifting comment about harmony. His "insults" were just humor, he was actually said to be a very lovely person. As for his friendship with Bob Newhart, they were life long friends and their families used to vacation and spend holidays together.

Saw Rickles in Las Vegas. He was the opening act for Frank Sinatra that night. My friends and I were honored to be made fun of by Don that night. He was the best ever at that type of humor. Sad state of affairs that we’ve lost our sense of humor now and Don’s brand of comedy is no longer acceptable. We’re all the worse off for it as a society. Not being able to laugh at ourselves is another step in the road to our ruination. Enjoyed your reaction Phil & Sam. 😊

Don Rickles and Rodney Dangerfield were the 2 best stand up comedians of their time. Heck baby didn't be amongst the top comedians if you add the comedians of all time up until the present.
You will always get a decent amount of views when you react to either one. As far as Don Rickles, I would recommend you look for the videos. And there's many of them where it was Don Rickles on the Johnny Carson show which he did something like 40 appearances on. Those videos are out there on RUclips and they are absolutely hilarious. The same as Rodney Dangerfield on Johnny Carson. Anyway, in case you're listening. I just thought I would tip you off as to the quickest way to see more Don Rickles and be Guaranteed a great video!

My brother and I went to see one of his last shows in Las Vegas just before he passed away. On a whim, I called my brother who lives in Vegas, and asked him if he was available the following weekend, that I wanted to fly down and catch a comedy show and just hang out. He got tickets to see Don Rickles and I am so glad we could go. He had me laughing so hard I thought I would pass out. He was pretty frail by then and had to be helped onto stage and sat for most his act, but he was still quick crass. RIP Mr. Rickles!

6:34 Mr. T wasn't just a pop culture icon, he was a legend (in certain circles) before his acting career. From Wiki...
"He eventually parlayed his job as a bouncer into a career as a bodyguard that lasted almost ten years. As his reputation grew, he was contracted to guard, among others, clothes designers, models, judges, politicians, athletes and millionaires. His clients included celebrities such as Steve McQueen, Michael Jackson, LeVar Burton, and Diana Ross, and boxers such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Leon Spinks."

One of the nicest men in show business, and this was just his comedic character. He spared nobody. Blacks, whites, Hispanics, everyone was a target. He's been deed for many years now, but he was also an actor in some very serious dramatic roles. One of the funniest guys ever. Like Robbin Williams, Don Rickles never had his material written down beforehand. Most of it was total improvisation, off the top of his head, in the moment. Sharp as a tack as they say.

On stage, Rickles was ruthlessly savage. Off stage, he was a very kind hearted man. Also, if you notice, he didn't do ANY "roast" with the intent to hurt someone's feelings. There was absolutely NO malice behind his words. That was another difference in how his roasts were received. A lot of people love to say, "People weren't so sensitive back then", which is partially true. But Don never set out to make someone feel bad. That's why being roasted by him became such an honour.
I actually see a similar method with the newly "blowing up" kid, Matt Rife. He doesn't set out to hurt people's feelings, but even his roasts are designed to make everyone (including the target) laugh. It's a skill that not everyone possesses.

Don Rickles did do stand up, and at the time he was one of the few, perhaps the only one, doing insult humor. Early in his career he actually got into trouble a couple of times with people who didn't understand where he was coming from, or what he was about.
He was so unique at the time, that he attracted the attention of various celebrities who would crowd in to see his late shows at the different places he was working. That's how he ended up meeting Frank Sinatra and Johnny Carson.
Carson immediately booked him for the Tonight Show in the mid-sixties. That's when Rickles went from being an obscure stand up comedian, and occasional actor, to being a true icon.
From the mid-1960's to the early 1990's, he was one of the most famous people in the world. (You guys need to expand past that video you've got.) Frank Sinatra and Buddy Hackett both told hilarious stories about Rickles when they were appearing on talk shows in the1970's, and Don's exchange with G.Gordon Liddy when they were both guests on Conan O'Brien's show is priceless.
By the 1990's Don was considered one of the grand old men of comedy, and many up and coming comedians sought him out just to get to know him, and pick his brain about the world of comedy.
When Johnny Carson died, Jay Leno devoted a show to his memory. There were only three guests. The singer Katie Lang, who Carson liked quite a bit, and real life best friends Don Rickles and Bob Newhart, who were apparently closer to Carson than anyone else in the entertainment industry.
I bought Don's book when it came out, thinking I'd be treated to the inside dirt swirling around various stars. At the very least I thought I'd read some juicy gossip about Hollywood. The so called Merchant of Venom wrote nothing of the sort. He didn't say an unkind word about anyone, and passed on no gossip at all. Turns out that's the kind of guy he was.
All I could think of when Rickles died, was that it was truly the end of an era. Another thought also crossed my mind... If there's a heaven, and boy I sure hope there is, I imagine the angels were lining up to be insulted by the great Don Rickles when he arrived!

There's a short outtake from Get Smart on YT that's hilarious. Don Adams was also a good friend of Rickles', and their back-and-forth is perfect.

Back in the '50s he was playing a standup gig in a club in Miami and Frank Sinatra walks into the room in the middle of the set, and Don immediately starts insulting him with lefthanded compliments regarding his latest movie performance and the crowd loved it - Sinatra was so impressed he brought other celebs along in subsequent nights to be insulted, also - and that's how Don Rickles got famous.

Great reaction love Don Rickles. Please react to Foster Brooks roasting Don Rickles. It's one of the funniest things ever. As soon as he is called up he's into his Act and doesn't return to his normal self until he sits back down. Another classic comedian

People like Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, and a lot of stars when they went to or played Vegas would rush to get down front of his shows to get insulted by him.
He was the emperor of insults, and people loved him for it. There was an HBO special, I think, called The Mr Warmth or Mr. Wonderful or something like it. You'd love it!

HIs 90th birthday was televised, with everyone paying homage to him, and at the end of the show, he had to be helped to get to the center stage, but his mind was still as sharp as ever as he cut into everyone there, giving them one last hoorah before he passed.

In late 50's, Rickles was doing his act and Frank Sinatra and "friends " came in. After the hubbub died down,Rickles said to Sinatra "Make yourself at home, hit somebody" His "friends "were upset and Sinatra broke the tension by laughing. They became friends after that. He called Rickles "bullethead", maybe a reference to what Sinatra prevented happening to Rickles.

It's important to note that even as an insult comic, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who had a bad word to say about Don. It was all his act and he ended each show explicitly explaining that and how he loves everyone and it's all in jest.

From everything I've read and seen, people absolutely loved being picked out by Rickles for abuse. He didn't have a mean bone in his body. And, yes, the insults could be repetitive if you watched him back to back like this. We couldn't do that back in the 60s or 70s, when I was a kid. Any TV appearance was something to be cherished. We didn't have cable TV (no one did in our small city, that I know of) and my parents were too, uh, thrifty to get TV Guide, so I stayed up and listened to Carson's monologue to learn if Rickles was going to be on. He was always so great, and for some reason it made he absurdly happy that he and his wife always went on vacation with Bob Newhart and his wife. There comedy was at polar opposites, but they were best friends for decades.

If no one has suggested it, find the talk show appearance where Denzel stays on set so that he can experience Rickles. Talk about respect.

My thoughts as someone who grew up in the last bit of the Baby boomer generation.
Don Rickles was a fantastic comedian. His banter and quick wit made him famous. And here is the kicker. He wasn't doing it maliciously. Everyone knew that at the time. His fans loved how he could tear into someone in jest. People have forgotten That someone making light of someone doesn't mean it's an actual slam.
Much like the Archie Bunker memes where people think we've gone too soft. The entire point of the show was that Archie was a bigot and an ass. And because that, he was usually the one being laughed at not laughed with.
Now, could someone like Don Rickles make it today? I don't believe so. Are we any worse off because of this? No. Not until some people realize the difference between humor and actual bigotry.

If only we could live those days again. Everyone got along, for the most part. It's all comedic fun, and they all roasted each other equally. Today is just embarrassing and people are so soft and fake offended.
