Mollyboy, you have to keep in mind that we had so many great songs coming out in the 70's. This was a great song when it came out, but every other song on the radio was great back then. I've said it before I'll say it again. The 70's had the most talent and the best music. No auto tune, no digital studio tricks, just talent.

Ah, 1965-1985.... the 20 years where you had basically EVERY band AT THEIR PRIME coming through your radios putting out one amazing hit after another, only to pick up their albums and find HIDDEN GEMS that hit harder and yet NOT played as often on the radio as you would think they would have been.
Gotta say, that when you look at a simple 20 year run of the music industry in general, the number of solo artists, bands, albums and songs that became so ICONIC that they STILL shock you when you hear them for the first time decades later

The band has two separate styles depending on whether the guitarist Tommy Shaw wrote and sang the song (like this one) or it was written and sung by keyboardist Dennis DeYoung (who wrote the more romantic songs.) Tommy thought that Dennis’s songs were too “mushy” so he was a bit at odds with him. 😂 But they were all hits.

In 1978, Styx brought their "Pieces of Eight" tour to Toronto, Canada, and I happened to be working for the band that was going to open for them. I was already a fan, so I was excited to see them live for the first time. The opening act waits patiently with their gear while the headliners do their sound check. Their soundman asks for some vocals so he could get the levels and mix right. And then they opened their mouths with that incredible a Capella (singing without any instrumental backing) opening for Renegade. Our mouths dropped open as we came as close to hearing angels sing. They did a few more from different songs but I can tell you, that was one hell of an experience. Talk about the hairs on the back of your neck standing at attention!
Great channel Molly Boy. The astonishment on your face that turns to pure joy while listening to the music of "my generation" (I'm 70 years old) is heartwarming. Ironically, I took one of my 3 daughters to a Styx show in 2013 and she got to experience their incredible talent. True, Dennis deYoung was long gone by then, but Larry Gowan is an incredible talent as well, and someone that had also grown up in the Toronto music scene.

Styx actually remind me of Chicago. Those guys are one of those bands from the 70s that were just powerhouses; There was always a song of theirs in the top 40 pretty much at least a couple times a year of my youth. Styx were a paragon of what the best rock and roll Artists can do, doing what they do really well in the 70s: if you were worth your salt, you could also pull off the really good rock ballads as well.
And since you had all this other excellence around you, you had to rise to the challenge yourself and make excellent music to compete. (See: benefits of meritocracy.) These guys are just some of the best. Great reaction!

The lead singer on this song is also the lead singer of the SuperGroup Damn Yankees...also containing Jack Blades (Night Ranger) and Ted Nugent. You need to react to their song 'Higher'. Not only does it feature Tommy Shaw's killer vocals, but a VERY unique perspective of Ted Nugent's fingering on his guitar solo.

At the time these 70s superstar songs were played on the radio and everyone listened to the radio; in their cars, homes, and. the park or the beach. We had jukeboxes everywhere. These bands were touring our towns. So, if you can imagine, we heard these songs until they were embedded in our lives. The music was ubiquitous. Imagine how we were affected? Fantastic for us.
