When I first heard this as a child in 1990s I thought this was a lot older song, because it has become such a classic in Finland ;) I think this is a great song and this performance is just stunning!
The child of the earth is looking for love Will she ever settle down Even a migrating bird Finds a nesting tree instinctively But the child of the earth keeps looking for love Sadness in her mind I don’t have any wings, but I must keep moving on Will I ever find peace? I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star I’m begging you, to lead me home I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star I’m begging you, to lead me home Lead me The child of the earth is looking for love Trying to hide her longing All my wishes of the dawning Will be destroyed by the sunset The child of the earth is looking for love Star of the night you are my consolation As long as your shine Is lighting up my way I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star I’m begging you, to lead me home I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star I’m begging you, to lead me home (I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star) I’m begging you, to lead me home
I think this translation is flawed. It is not stated in the lyrics what "the child of the earth/land" it looking for. "Etsien käy lapsonen maan" means "The child of the earth/land is seeking". It seems (to me at least) that whatever the child seeking is up for interpretation. Of couse the child could be looking for love, but they could also be looking for direction (in life) or an identity.
I think all the points who go to Ireland should have go ti Finland and all the points to Finland to Ireland, that was just a mistake during the voting. Greetengs from Iceland
I only came across this the other day as i knew quite a few songs from 1979 but not this one. I looked it up and here i am really loving it. It has the same tone as a few other Finnish entries from early 80’s (1983 and some others) that i really liked, it’s like there is a pattern with these Finnish entries that i really enjoyed.
Excellent use of Greek - hyvä! (hope I got this right) And, yes, indeed, I would also rank this among your best-ever entries, and also your most underrated.
Mon top five: 1 Israel 2 France 3 Allemagne 4 Finlande 5 Danemark
Yes, I totally agree with you. I can understand the Spanish entry's appeal, and I do think it's a good song, but this is just a much more inspired and truly original entry. As for how this ended 14th while the truly mediocre Irish entry ranked 5th, well... let's just say that a fair ranking should, at the very least, have them switching places.
A very interesting and well-expressed opinion, even if I don't agree 100% with you. But, yes, it was indeed at incredibly strong year, so sth was bound to fall through the cracks - and maybe you're right that Katri Helena's song wasn't so immediately likeable as the rest. Anyway, besides Ireland. I don't have a problem with the rest of the top-5. they were all quite deserving, each in its own way (my personal picks mey have been slightly different, but still).
Etsien käy lapsonen maan Tokkopa koskaan juurtua saan Lintunenkin muuttaessaan Pesäpuun löytää vain vaistollaan Mutta etsien käy lapsonen maan Haikeus mielen kotina vaan Siivetön oon, etsiä saan Rauhaa en löydä kai milloinkaan Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua Ohjaa mua Etsien käy lapsonen maan Peittäen turhaan kaipaustaan Toiveenikin päivien työn Mennessään ilta vie syliin yön Etsien käy lapsonen maan Lohtua iltaan raukenevaan Tähti sä yön loisteesi sun Eksyneen viitaksi hohtees luo Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua (Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua) Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua
I don't understand the Ireland and Finland switching places comments. I think this entire year was incredibly strong. Finland has a good song here, but it seems to me that it's lyric-heavy, which is a problem when your language is Finnish. Look at the top 5: each one perfectly embodies one emotion for me. Appreciation of beauty, childhood innocence, sheer melodic power, unbridled energy, and a first love. I'm trying to put my finger on the Finnish song, and the most expressive part is the title.
I agree with escjesc on this being underrated and the annoying Irish entry being overrated - but I have a theory that almost every year there is at least one truly overrated entry, and at least one truly underrated one.
Ooohh, stop it now, you're making be blush... :-) Well, anyway, thank you very much for the compliment. I try my best, though I still don't think that my channel can even begin to compare to yours!
Expressing one clear emotion or not, that is not necessarily what makes a song good. The Irish song just sounds irritating to me and way too old-fashioned, whereas the Finnish song I find a very captivating melody. But with music, it's always 'to each his own'.
One word "UNDERRATED"
This was a brilliant performance of a very good song from Finland,
Noel Smyth.
40 years later and this still sounds great. Should've finished much higher, but sadly Finland was often underrated.
Happy Birthday,Katri!! 75 and still going...
This is i think the best song of Finland ever
This is a great and very underated song by Finland. Great performance on the night by Katri Helena. Why did no one vote for it?
Amazing performance and touching sound.
When I first heard this as a child in 1990s I thought this was a lot older song, because it has become such a classic in Finland ;) I think this is a great song and this performance is just stunning!
I find it be magical, the lyrics, although I don't understand them they seem to be sending a message across as well...
Great song and fine performance from Katri Helena.
The child of the earth is looking for love
Will she ever settle down
Even a migrating bird
Finds a nesting tree instinctively
But the child of the earth keeps looking for love
Sadness in her mind
I don’t have any wings, but I must keep moving on
Will I ever find peace?
I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star
I’m begging you, to lead me home
I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star
I’m begging you, to lead me home
Lead me
The child of the earth is looking for love
Trying to hide her longing
All my wishes of the dawning
Will be destroyed by the sunset
The child of the earth is looking for love
Star of the night you are my consolation
As long as your shine
Is lighting up my way
I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star
I’m begging you, to lead me home
I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star
I’m begging you, to lead me home
(I’m looking at the blue sky, the brightest star)
I’m begging you, to lead me home
This is poetry...

This is one of songs that I like from Finland, so nice....!!!!🇪🇦💜🇫🇮
I think all the points who go to Ireland should have go ti Finland and all the points to Finland to Ireland, that was just a mistake during the voting.
Greetengs from Iceland
kex kaka the same happened in 1993 but jury mistook Ireland with Iceland. And im sure here you mean Israel. Its not even anthemish.

it's still such a great great song by Katri Helena!
Wonderfull song

42 years gone & still this song is a magic. beutifull🎼❤
You just know what's coming as you listen along ...😊
Brilliant 👏 😊🇫🇮
loved it at that time ...
amazing
12 points from SPAIN
The most important your 10 points made our Hallelujah to win! thanks Spain!
katri helena 👏👏👏
The best parts of this song is where the fiddles play solo for a few secs, i thought it was quite powerful
agree!
Excellent use of Greek - hyvä! (hope I got this right) And, yes, indeed, I would also rank this among your best-ever entries, and also your most underrated.
Mon top five:
1 Israel
2 France
3 Allemagne
4 Finlande

Bravoooo !!!! ❤👏👏
deserved at least 5 place
wonderful.....
Should be mixed with "Head over heels". True winner!!!!
Head over heads is from 1981, and this is 2 years before!
It deserved to come higher than 14th, but it has a very early-70's sound to it. Mind you, the winner wasn't exactly bang up to date either!
JUST BEATIFUL..
I don't understand finnish but seems a beautiful song...

Hyvä laulu!
From the Philippines.
This has now become on my favorite Finnish entries. But in this strong year, it still didn't deserve more than 9th place, in my opinion.
1 France
2 Israël
3 Allemagne
4 Finlande
5 Espagne
❤ katri.... 2024
Indeed - and sometimes more than one in each category (see 1988 or 1992, to give just two examples).
Writer "Vexi" Salmi 1942-2020 RIP
grrrreat song :-))

Etsien käy lapsonen maan
Tokkopa koskaan juurtua saan
Lintunenkin muuttaessaan
Pesäpuun löytää vain vaistollaan
Mutta etsien käy lapsonen maan
Haikeus mielen kotina vaan
Siivetön oon, etsiä saan
Rauhaa en löydä kai milloinkaan
Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua
Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua
Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua
Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua
Ohjaa mua
Etsien käy lapsonen maan
Peittäen turhaan kaipaustaan
Toiveenikin päivien työn
Mennessään ilta vie syliin yön
Etsien käy lapsonen maan
Lohtua iltaan raukenevaan
Tähti sä yön loisteesi sun
Eksyneen viitaksi hohtees luo
Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua
Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua
Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua
Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua
(Katson sineen taivaan tähti kirkkain sua)
Taas mä pyynnöin vaivaan, ohjaa kotiin mua

I was a little angry when Israel won this year and the song wasn't even that good! This is the year that Finland should have won!
Sarina Alexa i agree. This is a true winner. And France
Israel 1978 sucked but 1979 was great!
the beginning sounds a little bit like moskau from Germany 1979 dschinghis khan ^^ i like this song
Iha kiva
I am shocked this song did not win!
oh come on...
I agree with escjesc on this being underrated and the annoying Irish entry being overrated - but I have a theory that almost every year there is at least one truly overrated entry, and at least one truly underrated one.

Karti on paras!!!
The closest thing we'll ever get to a USSR entry.
Somewhat too gasping solo performance - make no mistake that song itself is great but performance here leaves a bit to desire....

Cazzo sinen taivan.
Not cazzo (LOL) but katson :)
