Although the ancient skeleton provides ancient coins, the shrouded ghost is literally the rarest spawn in the game, with a .5% chance of any meg that spawns being one, so statistically 1 out of ever 200 megs should be a shrouded ghost but that is being very generous so you definitely have to encounter more megs in most cases
There used to be a strat with the heart of fire tall tale where waves of skeletons spawn and you can farm ancient skellys but they dont have infinite skeletons now
Go to shores of gold, they are more likely there either because of the increased spawn rate of skellies, or the larger size of the island, but either way plan out some times that you can head to shores of gold and just wait for ancient skellies to spawn, you might break the streak
Something cool, is that if I remember right the only reason Ancient Skellys are said to get 100-800 coins is because 800 is the most someone's gotten from one. For all we know, it may be possible to get more than 800, it's just probably rarer than a shrouded ghost if it's true lol.
A couple years back I found 2 ancient skellys in roughly a 5 hour time frame, it was the first time ever seeing them and the first gave me 450 credit and the second only gave 100 so not only are they rare but they also don’t give the max amount very often. So if your lucky enough to get 800 cherish that moment

Ive been playing since season 2. And id like to point out that ive noticed a significant drop in spawnrate of these guys. I used to find these guys not all the time, but enough to make respectable amount. Nowadays they rarely spawn. Havent seen one since season 10
Yeah season 10 or so was the last time I’ve seen one. During some community weekend a year or so ago they increased the spawn rate of ancient skellies and let everybody know, so we spent an absurd amount of time on islands, rather than rushing around. Every island we had to be at, we grabbed a storage crate and ran around collecting everything. Doing everything at each island. Think we saw 5-6 that day. Since then, granted I’ve been playing pretty much just hourglass, I haven’t seen any. But 3-4 runs of stacking and fotd, nada.
It is really likely that they dropped the Spawn rate, 'cause Remember, sea of thieves a good game, but rare is a shitty company, they want you to pay a ship skin with a Price similar to fucking elden ring
@LuckySOT I can corroborate. I'm a day 1 vet, month 1 PL and I haven't seen an ancient skeleton since season 10 or lower. I used to see them maybe once a week or so. Definitely feels tweaked to be barely obtainable. Had one spawn on a crew member that was running FotD while we were stacking rituals on a BB and it only dropped 151, so even still, seems as though they also lowered the average drop number of the currency on top of the spawn rate.
I just started playing three days ago, heard one back on the island as I was crossing a rope back to my ship and just figured it was some kind of mini boss at the time
Another tip for finding these skellies, take a rowboat from your boat, row it very far away from your boat to an island which can spawn skellies, and your chances will increase alot
Got one recently after just finishing a Spanish fort. Was loading in all the treasure and suddenly got jump scared by the sound (cause you dont expect anything to spawn after you're done clearing a fort) got me a nice 200 extra ancient coins
at 131 a piece, it will take a hot minute to buy anything lol during the devils roar event i had 3 of these guys pop up, before that i had only ever killed it once, i’ve heard the music a bunch but i’m always either out of ammo or he gets away before i can get him
The first time one of them spawned near me i immediately kicked into fight or flight cuz of the loud spawn sound and proceeded to put it down like a rabid dog😅
A friend and I stacked 37 captain gold vault yesterday and while being at the vault for around 5 hours 2 ancient scellys spawned. In total we got 400 ancient coins
I think I saw one of those when I first started pulling the game, it was on a small island and I left it alone because it wasn’t attacking me😂 I’m just like oh that thing looks cool, I guess I’ll leave it alone because it’s not hurting anything

Saw two of these yesterday... And a Shrouded Ghost for the first time in 2000 hours. Unfortunately I have now used up all my luck, hadn't seen an ancient skeleton in weeks previous. A single blunderbuss shot can ace ancient skeletons so they're not tanky but I still throw everything at them the monent I hear the distinctive music and coin jingle.
One time I was playing with my 9 year old brother (we play a lot) and he started yelling because there was a “weird skeleton making coin sounds” and he ran away before I could explain what it was and it got away 😢
I have about 2k hours and have gotten about ten or so of these guys. The most I’ve ever gotten is around 300 and I had no idea they came close to 800 so don’t expect that much from them and don’t think that they’re a reliable source either!
in my first 500 hours i found like 30 of em but now at 1.8k hours i haven't seen a single one in 2 years even with the increased spawn rate rare gives from the comunity week
if i remember correctly, the skull of siren song can spawn skellies, so if I'm correct then you could use it as a farm for the ancient skelly, let me know if I'm right or wrong
I have 134 hours in sot and found 9 ancient skelly sofar while one of my friends with 2000 hours didnt even had one i feel like they spawn more often if your solo since all of them spawned when i played solo. I got lucky by one of them and He dropped me 650 ancient coins

my best luck was finding 3 of them in 2 years of playing, all those cases happened when we was solving puzzles on an island for more than half an hour

I've gotten so many of these sometimes 2 in one day just from diving to seaforts. You can also chill on a seafort waiting for them.

Also worth noting, ancient skelly spawn chances are increased during voyages and tall tales 👀
They spawn more if you're away from your ship, so park it up somewhere and row as far away as you can get.
I wanted the reapers mark sails once, they were there for a few more days, i just had enough luck to get 3 or 4 (i dont remember) within two sessions.
It would be cool if Rare added the ancient skeleton as a skeleton colour combination for those that have the skeleton curse

i heard that ancient skellys' emergence rates go up when more than one ship is in namecard distance of an island.
You can also wait a year or so and the item will at some moment be available for purchase with coins

basically, there is a gold slime it’s really rare and will despawn 3 to 5 seconds after you encounter it
TIP:if you particularly want to maximise your chances of finding one that spawn more often on skeleton forts and sea forts
