  • The ONLY Boat You NEED in Sea of Thieves
A lot of pirates agonize over the choice between Sloop, Brigantine or Galleon even though the answer is simple: The humble rowboat!
In today's episode, Brandon and I made it our mission to prove why this vessel is superior to all the other ones by embarking on a rowboat challenge.
Magical things happen when only spend your time on a rowboat between many highlight worthy situations and funny moments, we also had to combat a toxic crew while raiding a Fort of Fortune.
I hope you're ready for this tale because when it comes to toxic pirates in PvP, Brandon and I are more than happy to enact our own pirate code. Enjoy!

If I had to guess, ancient skeletons are made to spawn when you're least expecting them, on islands away from your ship etc., so seeing as you were away from your ship for nearly the entirety of your playtime, it greatly increased the chance for them to spawn.

For real though, you would think they could have a built in mechanic where if you get wiped (i.e. whole crew dies and ship sinks) by the same crew multiple times (I don't know, maybe say, 3 times?) that you and your crew get migrated to another server. That would solve grief issues on both sides.

the cannon rowboat is technically the smallest ship because: you can get on and off it, it has a cannon to defend itself, you can store loot on it, and it has a way to sink. It may be missing the map table and storage barrels but you can replace the storage barrels with storage crate.

One of my single favorite moments in Sea of Thieves was launching myself into an island for supplies, only to find a bunch of loot and a rowboat with a cannon.
Not sure exactly how, but my navigation skills led me across the entire ocean, following as my friends as they tracked down a sloop for plunder.
In a stroke of stupidly persistent genius, I caught up with the crew by the time they started ramming my crew. Before the boat could escape, I set them on fire and dropped their sail using cursed balls, and well, it was kind of badass.
They couldn't believe how well I could keep up, on a rowboat. I'm known as the rowboat professional of the crew now.

I'll solo just about any PvE. I attempted to solo an Ashen Lord, but another crew came in and sniped me. My mates were doing the Megalodon event during this, and Mermaid Hideaway happened to spawn an Ashen Lord right when my buddies left, so I swam back to it, maybe a couple nautical miles. Fought two sharks at once and not a scratch on me. Brought the Ashen Lord to it's second phase, got sniped.

Heh, sometimes you win sometimes you lose.
Last week me and a friend actually did something similar to this video.
“There are 2 brigantines at that FoF and we have a rowboat, you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“I’ve soloed an ashen lord while double gunning, shouldn’t be too hard”
So we row over there and use the 2 brigantines to sink each other and make them hate each other and start doing the fort ourselves. One of the brigantines came back but instead of tuccing we continued doing the fort, the more combat the better. We were so close, cleared about 10 waves up until we were overwhelmed by skeleton kegs, 2 skeleton lords, a “pistol boi” firing squad, and players. We bit off a bit more than we could chew had so much fun.

I remember my first chest of sorrow, I had no idea that it cried and sunk the ship, so being a naive young pirate I venture myself into pirate's heaven whilst leaving the chest alone in my ship, when I came back there was nothing but the loot, fruit of my effort, and that damned chest with it's vengeful grief.
But luck was set upon me, as a lonely rowboat lazily floated to my side, asking me to not give up my loot for scavengers to find.
I set my course blindly amidst the open ocean, and even though it was risky, I still took with me that treacherous suffering chest, hoping it would not cry until I made it safely to land again. To my surprise, the chest wept but my rowboat did not falter a bit, and in no time I had made my way over to the nearest outpost and sold all my loot, and it was all because of that sturdy, beautiful little boat.
A have many a tale of that boat saving my life, and in the process, my faith in the sea of thieves.

I've always loved the rowboats in this game. Great video!
Also I love that you sailed the key into the Red, I so often do the same when I am accosted by a larger and/or better attacking force. It's why I love the Brigantine, it's not great for solo pvping, but its indubitably excellent as a solo Runner. Being as it's faster than the sloop in 3/4ths of wind direction and faster than the Gally 2/4ths of wind directions making it great for running. One of those directions is also wind from behind-at-an-angle. The sloop's fastest speed is the fastest of the Slowest, making it a higher likelihood that while running the wind direction will change and making it harder to get off-map before you are chased down.
The Brig's behind-at-an-angle advantage gives it more speed while escaping, it's size is a bit annoying but not impossible at all for a solo, and it's 2/4ths of the time being faster advantage over the Gally makes it the best runner for a solo who is 100% dedicated to running from pvp. Also makes it great for sailing into the Red and giving them all a big middle finger on the way down. Considering I find some of the best pvp'ers to be Sloopers, and it's faster in every single wind direction except straight on against, it's my by-far favorite. Though I do love the sloop's small size, simplicity, and relaxing nature. Just wish it had some speed!

Sheeeesh 3 ancient skeletons in one session is wild! My buddy and I got 2 during one Ashen Winds event once, but this is next level. It does make sense... the only way to spawn them is to spend time on islands/forts, and you did a lot of that! GG!

I think this is the video where Cliff gets stuck on an island and tries to cook some food up on a campfire but a storm comes in and shuts him down. In the video, Cliff gives up on the idea - but it is actually possible to cook on a campfire in a storm. The fire goes out a moment after you light it with the torch but you get about 2~3 seconds worth of cook time. For your standard meat, it takes about two minutes instead of the usual 65s - and you'll have to relight the fire about 20x - but you will have a cooked piece of meat afterwards.

For a very long time I have been rowing around without a ship for the same perks that you mentioned in this video and yes, I have completed forts while doing so. That being said, I seriously enjoyed watching you discover the thrill of pirating via rowboat and enjoyed it immensely when you trashed those rabid, toxic, sore losers time and time again only to drive the nail in their metaphorical coffin by dumping the key. Priceless! 😆

The fact people can spawn back and keep returning non stop is why I think they need to implement more ways to combat this kind of behavior. Like your ship taking longer to spawn. The ship respawning with some hefty damage that takes time to repair. Or a Notification after being sunk a few times that moves you to another Server.
As it stands, it's too easy for people to keep coming back again and again till you finally lose.

It was an....interesting experience....oh. and all this happened 5 minutes before I typed this.

Gunpowder barrel skeletons don’t spawn holding the barrel. They spawn, then they quickly bend down and pull one up from the ground. I’ve died because I swung my sword at what appeared to be a regular skeleton that spawned, but was shocked when it suddenly hoisted up a powder keg into my incoming sword.

I have LOVED doing rowboat only and swim till you find a rowboat then rowboat only challenges. Got some of my most memorable moments that way. Like rowing alongside one of flamehearts fleet (when they were still here) to hide behind the ghost galleon to sneak up on a sloop and got a double keg on them and got my rowboat clear too!

Ok so now I really want Rare to add a rare (lol) tiny sailboat the size of a rowboat so that challenges like this are more feasible. Like. Imagine it has a sail that can hardly be turned and can't be lowered, and the only thing close to an anchor it has is a mounted harpoon. It would be so much easier to transport loot around islands, but also this kind of challenge would be even more interesting, since if it had a harpoon it couldn't have a cannon. Like.... wouldn't that be cool?? you could sail around on your dinky little skiff lol

I'm not gonna lie the row boat definitely is like the only ship you need the problems is navigation if your not very familiar with the map and number 2 is no way of defense and number 3 is simply the fact of speed other than that its actually not a bad boat to have I mean like it saved me on a couple of skirmishes on events so overall this video is a great example
