I've taken many breaks from Dayz over the years but always find my way back. Day Z requires a very unique type of gamer. You really have to be okay with loosing gear, no maps, making horrible mistakes that get you killed and not worry a lot about what other people think. Most people can't play that long term daily, I can't anyway. The biggest issue I have with the game at this point is the official servers are unmoderated cesspools. Otherwise its one of the best games Ive ever owned and played. I am a 53 year old gamer, ive been playing video games since 1982. Day Z will always be in my top 10 somewhere.

Dude I’ve never heard anyone summarize dayz and that problem so well. I love dayz as I believe it was intended to be played according to the official servers. The unregulated cess pool of cheaters, dupers, glitches makes the game nearly unplayable in the end game. Why does everyone’s bases disappear over night? Dupers. What’s the point in spending hours and days building a base to have it all deleted overnight and offline by non life cheaters. One thing to lose it honestly to someone who had to gamble their entire hard gained explosive stockpile, but to lose it all to cheaters? Cmon now how can you expect anyone to stay with the game

Solo play and being rewarded for careful, patient game play are what's kept me for so long . My solo to team mate play is probably a 9:1 ratio. Nice! Yeah, I was playing for a few months and managed to get 2 buddies to buy it. One quickly fell in love with it like me (& we’ve got 2 “saves” that we dip into together a few times a week. Rad fun!) The other buddy tried it for 20-30 minutes and got frustrated with the survival difficulty. He’s evidently gone back in a few times and had some good (& some bad) interactions with other players but is pretty done after just a few hours in total. All of his experiences are actually part of what my other buddy and I love…sometimes the game is hours of pure survival. Sometimes it’s a horror stealth game. Too many zombies and you’re too weak to fight more than one or two, but you’ve GOTTA look “that building” because you need some food/beverage/meds/ammo/etc. Sometimes you’re tracking other players and that’s your self-imposed adrenaline pumping “mission”. But in any/all of those scenarios YOU might be being hunted. That last part is what (to me at least) makes every log-on absolutely nerve wracking and unlike any other games I can play (I’m on PS5). It’s kiiinda ruined other games for me this past year, but you know what? I don’t mind because DayZ (even with the jank and flaws) is just so dang GOOD. 🤷🏼‍♂️✌🏻

    1) Jank melee animations

    3) Obnoxious loot distribution
    4) Copy paste structures
    5) Less functionality after 10 years than early access
    6) Senseless balancing / rebalancing / unbalancing...

    • @ramenpirate
      @ramenpirate 11 месяцев назад +8

I started playing when the hype for the ArmA II Mod arose. It was at that time that I found myself enjoying a game like I havent enjoyed one for a very long time. We all remember those moments when we spotted our first Zombie in the distance and that horrifying soundtrack kicked in. After a while it wasnt that much of a horror anymore, because we adapted and learned (and exploited) to deal with the threat. We casually hopped through the villages, slowmo-trapped them Walkers into houses and while there are techniques to easily deal with them in todays version of the game too... after coming back to it I realized how wonderfully difficult it got. One slight mistake and youre getting encircled and eaten alive. With all the deseases and literally everything in this game trying to kill you, I've never felt so vulnerable in a game. Yes, you can run around and play it like a typical shooter, but that style never appealed to me. I like the roleplay, I like the slow and sneaky approach, like I would in real-life. I don't want to kill people, I never killed a person. Only if there is no way out I will use my gun to kill. But my Hunting rifle is for hunting food. If I'm lucky I make friends, but I'm very careful and don't trust anyone. Usually I disengange instantly when I feel a living person nearby. Most of the time I'm the solo surviver and hell do I love playing one character for days until one little mistake blackens my screen without any sound or forewarning. The story is over, dusk turned into night - but I'm ready for a new dawn.

So many DayZ standalone players have no idea what survival in this game was like in the days of the DayZ mod for Arma 2. The feeling of being in an open world where you could do what you wanted was still quite a new experience. So many of you missed out on what I think was the greatest time in gaming and I wish you who missed it could have experienced it.
The progression that the "community" of survival players went through during those years, from a cautionary style to a kill on sight style, was interesting to be part of and actually sparked moral discussions on what was the "right way" to play the game. It was largely considered "immoral" to kill someone for no reason, and downright evil to kill them for sport. Avoiding contact was the name of the game unless you HAD to kill to survive or avenge. Storing massive amounts of loot was not a thing (tents in trees only to be found in a matter of minutes). What you carried with you was mostly the entirety of your loot as finding a tent to place was also rare, so death was literally a start from scratch every time. Military loot was extremely rare and night vision goggles were prized because the night cycle would last for a full realistic night cycle, so you survived the night on tossing flares or you logged off and went to sleep irl. You never, ever looted a body in an open field as you were likely to be killed. There was no super fast sprinting like Usain Bolt like in DayZ SA, so if you fucked up you were going to be dead or knocked out in 1 shot. "He who moves first dies first" was a real rule to play by. Zombies could knock you out in 1 punch and any rock on the map could break your legs, and omg, don't get me started on the danger of stairs. Side chat constantly had messages from players that read "broke my leg at X location, someone please help me, been crawling for hours." Meds were rare. Vehicles spawned only in specific positions and there were very few on the map and you could not lock them. Over time, people started to tire of this hardcore survival cycle and more and more mods came out. Epoch with building bases and lockable containers and trader cities became a thing. Overwatch mod added a fuck ton of guns. Eventually, it was more like an arena shooter than what it started out as. Still fun, but not like the beginning. I miss the early days...if you can't tell :)

It was chaos and everything you said above is exactly how I remember it as well. So many good moments, I met my best online gaming buddy in this game. He saved my ass while being chased by a bunch of zeds and we gamed solid for the next 5-6 years. KOS would have meant that never happened. Owned dayz for pc since alpha testing. Back when climbing a ladder would break a leg. Now it has evolved into a playable game. But I prefer pve rather than pvp. They need more wolves closer to the coast tho. And some random zombies wandering the woods.

Mate, that was a great video! I've got 3500hours on the game but when I first started playing, it was hard! But I kept on, and like you said you really do need to keep going because you will have some beautiful moments in the game. So keep going newcomers! The game needs you, and if you put in the hours you are definitely going to have some great adventures. Not everyone is your enemy, try talking to people at the coast, the less geared the player the more chance thay will talk back and tell them your new, a player like me will happily take you on a adventure and teach you everything you need to know. Or for those who prefer the solo experience, watch more videos by alwaystreams for tips! Again great video bud.

Me and my buddy love the concept of the game.
We've both done about half a dozen good runs where we got to the point of being fairly well geared before taking several months off the game in between runs.
Our issue, as much of a skill issue as it is, is other players.
The gunplay just isn't what attracted us to the game. It's the inventory and food management, the navigation, the sneaking, the crafting, the base-building, and the vibe.
We just don't really care for other players, who just kinda take away the apocalyptic survival feeling and make you feel like you're in a really clunky FPS.

It's just one of those games. You either love it or hate it. I love it and even though I'm still terrible at it, I enjoy every life I have. Yes it's broken and always will be, but that's part of the appeal for a lot of us. The difficulty is what keeps us coming back. Are there better survival games out there? Sure there are, oddly enough though they don't seem as popular. I wonder why that is. One of the most appealing things to me personally though is not having to deal with as much toxicity as in other games. A lot of the dayz players are somewhat more mature. Not all by any streatch, but a lot of them.

I watched a lot of people playing DayZ on RUclips. Look like a cool game.
My first play spawned at night, complete darkness. I knew I was on a beach because I could hear my foot steps in the water but everything was complete darkness. I sat down and waited till dawn. I starved to death walking on a road.
Second play started the same at night. But I started with a glow stick. Was able to find a lighthouse to hide in till dawn. I found a small town almost died from a couple zombies. Was sneaking around looking for loot. But couldn't figure out how to switch cloths and storing gear. Finally gave up and logged out in a house.
I wish someone would make a tutorial with the absolute basics. Show us how to change cloths, how to transfer gear, how to eat food etc. What buttons need to use to do different actions. What actions on the hud to do the action. Does that make sense?
I play on a Xbox console so the controls are different from a computer. That doesn't help anything.
I don't mind not having a map, but I wish one was created from what we have explored. So we could at least look and see where we have been.
Is there a starter world that is easier for beginners? Something with an easier learning curve? Maybe something with more loot and weaker zombies type of environment? If life was easier for beginners to learn in it would encourage I longer play time, ya know?

Then I stepped on a random land mine that someone placed in a building. Damaged my leg so bad that taking 3-4 steps made me pass out from the pain. I didn't have supplies to make a splint, and dragging myself far enough to find a roll of duct tape and some sticks would have taken possibly hours. So, I did what I had to do. I pulled the pin on a grenade, placed it on the ground, and laid on top of it. Started back on the coast. No progression, and nothing gained from the experience.

The gearing up, dying, gearing up, dying again and again and again until you finally have everything to start a base is the best part of DayZ.

Run inland for an hour, get sick because it's always raining, no map so you have no idea where the next hospital is, then you die. Now do all that over again. So much fun! I try to play DayZ at least once a week. Usually on the weekends. But, the one thing that keeps me coming back to DayZ is the new adventures that come from....deaths. Yes, most of my deaths come at the worst moments. But, it's the new adventure that comes from a new life spawn that makes it worth it in the end. Of course, there are many times when the fresh spawns are at horrible locations. Trying to find a way to off yourself to get a new spawn can be frustrating.
I've resigned myself to the perpetual presence of bugs in DayZ. But, some new bugs can be quite annoying. Since they added "momentum" to character movement, I've found myself getting stuck inside walls while fighting off zombies. Many times I end up dying because of it. But, that's DayZ.
Still there are no other games like DayZ. So, I will probably keep playing DayZ until the end of time or life, whichever comes first.

  • @puntonone
    @puntonone 11 месяцев назад +1

Great piece. You nailed it. Because DayZ is so unstructured, players can create a personal style of play as they adapt to different aspects of the game, or change approaches and try new things. I play solo and have Favorited five Community servers. If it's raining on one, I go to another. If it's night, I go to another. On one server I am rocking it, on another I'm staggering around searching for medicine, or food, or shelter, or safety. A great strength of the game is that there is no structure to it, no missions, no quests, no pre-determined route I'm supposed to follow to complete the game. In fact, DayZ cannot be completed. Players are spawned into it, have to deal with it, then - inevitably - die. A change I would like to see made is an option to take out all the instructions on what is spelled out as possible, depending on, for instance, what tool you have in your hand. I've learned that if I have a knife in my hand and a chicken on the floor, I can cut it up. I know some bushes will give me a long stick. Because I've played for a while, I know how to do enough that hand-holding is not required. I should be able to turn it off.

The game is boring. Nobody ever says a word, and those that do only do so they can screw you over. Everyone is a glorified npc who will KOS in a heartbeat after you’ve walked halfway across the map. Plus, any cool items are extremely difficult to find since you have to go to specific locations which are a complete pain in the arse to find. Literally, just make you spawn with a map and it would be much more fun. The game is a walking simulator to your death. If it was easier to find a map, and if the infected *actually worked properly* it would be more reasonable. Seriously, npcs are so janky.
I get that these things are part of the appeal for some, but it just is not fun to walk across the map looking for a backpack for an hour only to get shot by some silent dick in the middle of the woods.

DayZ is not a shooter, it's a survival game, I wished people would understand that. I've been with really big groups and played solo, but soon as you start relying on others, that's where the game looses its charm. The sole survival, potential risk at every turn, not knowing what's next, being 46 and being my 1st game Dune back about 30 years ago. NO game has ever matched the intensity and emotion that DayZ delivers! But you need to be able to let it sync in, because it's not about winning, or performance, or any other of the usual statistics people look for. It's about survival, my best was about RL 3 days in game...I'm a ghost, I don't rely on canned food, you hardly ever see me, you usually didn't know I was there, but I survive, and sometimes I kill. And I enjoy those rare moments where you meet a stranger that develops into an adventure that you didn't foresee, on the rare ocassions you meet someone friendly. BTW> +9k hours and still enjoying it, never seen more value for 20 euro I spent on a game

A way to think of starting DayZ is that the game naturally tells you not to play it. You WILL starve, find nothing, get chased by zombies relentlessly, get sick, die a couple times over. And any normal person's reaction is an angry "okay fuck this game". But for most people if they make it over that there is much to gain and so much thrill you'd never had before in gaming.

I remember when we started a year ago… took half an hour to an hour for the 3 of us to find each other and all meet up. By the time we managed to regroup we were all sick and dying. We would die from Illness more than we died from players lol. Now I’m always searching for that next hardcore survival server 😅

Easy mode on official server, wait for train spawn near rify.. Hide a barrel.. Stash nbc gear in it... Loot rify easily, and a great spawn location north side.

I've recently started playing and after a couple of frustrating trys on normal servers I've found it much better after finding a less populated server with 3x the loot and I'm learning the game on there, what I cant get my head round though is the terrible buggy inventory system, for instance I never seem to be able to swap things to my hand and usually have to drop whatever weapon I'm holding to get a bandage or food into my hand.

Probably because your inventory is full, and the way to get good at the game is to play on the servers that DONT spoil you. It will teach you how to find food and where to look for it.

@@ictrlaltdeleteu Yes I've learnt that now also how to kill Infected without taking damage and the fact they usually carry food, I'm almost ready for the big boy servers lol.

I came close today as a new player (under 50 hours) when I found out base (tallest apartment in Turnow) had been raided. Everything was boarded up (no base damage server) but the game allowed a ground to stack watchtowers on each other to reach the vulnerable rooftop. Like dude..

What’s funny is in terms of aesthetics this game has not changed at all since it was released over a decade ago.

The thing that drives me off is stress, when I approach a military base I don't fear that I will loose my gear, I become paranoid. I hear foot steps, I see things move when there's nothing there, when there's actually a player there I become even more paranoid

The only problem that Dayz has that nobody seems point out is that it was advertized as zombie survival game but it is a essentially a more grindy version of battle royale game.Remove the zombies and the hunger/thirst system and you have PUBG.You spawn naked you gear and you play until someone else kills you.Thats it.This is not a zombie apocalypse game and the focus is heavily on pvp.
If you want a true zombie survival game just play 7 Days to Die or Project Zomboid

Time is #1 reason people quit. A session worth playing is at minimum 4 hours. General anxiety from the intensity is #2. The adrenaline and jitters are unlike any other game and it shatters egos. Inability to interact is #3. You have to actually meet people to enjoy it... Of course you can run and gun, but if you're only focus is PVP, you will be bored to death and DayZ will quit you before you quit it.

I've just been playing high pop servers, chilling in Cherno crates with a fishing rod and a campfire, and giving any passerbys some fish for the road. Stark contrast to my usual adventures, and has been peaceful and nice.

The food mechanic wouldn't be such an issue if it didn't take like 10 minutes to starve to death.
When I was broke, irl, I survived off of a can of beans and one pack of ramen per day. DayZ says go fuck yourself and starves you in almost no time at all.

for me what kept making me rethink of playing was playing on official servers and being unable to enter any major coastal city when i spawn (cherno, elektro or berezino) without being killed by a fully geared guy/group just for them to take my 1 bandage lol, but i guess its all part of the game so best i can do is learn to deal with it

I just bought the game a few days ago with no knowledge about the game, it kicked my ass even with supreme confidence heading in lol. The best advice I can give someone newer than me is understand exactly what the bottom right indicators are. As soon as I figured out the furthest left is "hydration", not sprint, and the droplet that I thought was hydration but actually is your blood levels, I haven't died since. Also learning how to cook food without a metal pot or trying to find small stones or canned food, and learning how to forage for fruits, this game *does* get easier.
Find a town/city with a water-well, locate fruits and chickens, set up a base at a house and you have a start. Playing on a x4 loot server really helped me grasp the mechanics since it was much easier before going back to an official server. I did run into 1 player so far on official (at spawn), we both had nothing to take and no weapons so we both t-bagged together and ran away lol

Half the fun of the game is getting lost in Cherno. I play PVE servers. I tried PVP before but I kept getting killed on sight. Also, it's fun just starting out, trying to loot to find gear and food, trying to survive off of the land, etc... I am sure I am missing some good interactions on a PVP server, but I like to relax and play on PVE servers.
DayZ is a unique game and is easily the best game I have ever played and I am 60 years old. I love this game. I am disabled/retired so I play for many hours all day long. It's great.

Feels like this game is designed for adult gamer. People that know how to take L and don't rage when die. Unfortunately it takes time in real life to be patient and appreciate small things like can of cat food 😂

I thought i was doing well, learnt the ropes. Got the scavenging, hunting and looting down. Even my base building is swift now. Decided to extra fortify it with barbed wire above and below. Now can't access my code lock without bleeding out...
    Dayz everyone!
Sidenote... after using all my bandages, cutting my clothes for rags and down to my last blast on a sewing kit i eventually destroyed the wire with a sledgehammer.
Good things don't come easy 😅

How i found my reason to stay was hosting my own private lan server for just me and my partner. We usually play as nomads , never really building a base or anything. We prefer pve so i up the danger of the infected. We mod it up for some fun things as well. We tried online play a few times but neither of us could ever last long enough to even meet up so we stick to our personalized experience.

I started playing DayZ years ago for player interaction, the only people left playing are so desperate to keep their goblin loot that they'll literally play for weeks just hunting players. You do you, but my memorable moments are meeting insane cretins and going on adventures with them. Hoarding loot in a base is unbelievably boring, you're just gonna lose it anyway. Some fat dude is gonna watch you for 16 hours, learn when you're at work or sleeping, and offline you. So many servers end up like carbon copies of Rust, it's kind of a shame.
