The difference between Barbie’s now and Barbie’s when I was a little girl I’m the 90s is mind boggling. As a little girl I would have never ever wanted anything they release now. The Barbie’s when I was a little girl we’re so detailed, beautiful and well thought out. They came with so many accessories and pieces and I don’t remember anything being molded on… just sad.

You said it so well! I'm a 90s kid too and honestly, if the Barbies had looked like this then, I would have probably just been into Sindy and Steffi Love. Speaking of which, these 2 doll lines have also gone mad lately... I want the 90s back!! 🥲

Same! I grew up with 80s Barbies, and they were outstanding, whether budget or not, always impeccable quality, absolutely beautiful and even always came with a brush and other accessories. I can't fathom that kids today get crap like this as birthday and Xmas presents!

@@fightthefairy yes! Me too I had the late 80's and early 90's Barbies. Cool Times Midge was my favorite and I had the Barbie and the Rockers. The quality was really nice. It kills me that the faces look so pixelated now. I also think the playsets were more creative than they are now. The only change that I am happy about is that there is more diversity with curvy figures and different ethnic features rather than just different color plastic.

I grew up with 90s and early 2000s Barbies and even the ones from 2000-2004 I had were spot on. Even the Mermaid Fantasy dolls with their non-removable tails at least had movement in the knees and a rubber-like tail, not hard plastic. The only doll I felt limited with was my Twirlin' Make-Up Teresa. Due to her twirling skirt feature she had a plastik thingy unterneath her fabric skirt which you couldn't remove so she couldn't wear pants. And the Palm Beach Midge had a painted on Bikini, but in a way so you could still put different clothes on her. I loved to put all the dolls in different clothes and I would've hated it if my dolls would've been so limited.

Mattel is doing great right now as a company. It had a great year last year, share prices are up, and it projects net sales going up 8 to 10% this year. As a publicly-traded company, what indication does it have that it is on the wrong track and should do something different? Your statement attributes way too much personal consideration to what a minority (i.e. collectors) of it’s market wants.

I hate the molded on clothes, but kind of understand it. My sister used to buy only those kind of barbies to my niece when she was really young because she used to strip the dolls the moment she got them and their clothes were lost forever.
Maybe that's the goal of those dolls, being rough played by really small kids.

I buy the cheap dreamtopia and swimsuit barbies for my son who’s 4. The quality of these dolls may be lacking, but if you look at the rest of the doll market i.e. mostly MGA, Barbie is filling the category of more affordable, super kid friendly dolls. At least a 3 year old can't lose a molded on top or choke on an articulated hand that pops out. It would still be nice for them to make a greater range of dolls in terms of quality in addition to these though.
As for the tie-in dolls, yes her name is Brooklyn because she and "original" Barbie were roommates at a summer arts program, so they nicknamed each other "Malibu" and "Brooklyn" after their hometowns. The twins from the set with the dogs are named Jackson and Jayla. They are characters from the new show Barbie: It Takes Two starring the two Barbies. The twins are Brooklyn's parents' godkids *and* they canonically have two dads who are the first same-sex couple in Barbie media (but they don't show up on screen). The show is only 13 episodes and is actually pretty good, so I'd recommend it especially if you want to be borderline queerbaited by Mattel because Brooklyn and Malibu's friendship sure is... close haha.

Mattel NEEDS to give more of their dolls articulation. It's much more playable for both adults and children. The soccer/ football dolls don't even have articulation. That's so dumb. They're sports players. The whole thing of sports is to move!
If every doll I buy has to have its body replaced with a made-to-move and I need to fuss with finding a good skin match, I end up not buying any dolls at all. It feels like Mattel is trying to stop people from buying their products.

I would NEVER guess these are Totally Hair Barbie's remade. There absolutely should be 60s mod reference with these.

Brunette Totally Hair Barbie is one of my favorite childhood dolls. That said, I don't hate the new ones but they should have called it something else. The basic mermaid in teal has a really cute face. I think Mattel does this on purpose because her and the purple haired mermaid have older sculpts and smaller heads that adult collectors might like, so they get a sale from the people who just want to head swap.

With so many awesome competition dolls from mga...youd think barbie would be trying harder, but sadly it feels like barbie has just given up! I realise basic models are necessary for younger kids but no articulation or real clothes...well, that's just like a lump of plastic, how does that encourage play. Watch any kid with a doll..the FIRST thing they play with are hair and clothes. Wake up Mattel! I think barbie has lost touch over recent years with their audience. I hope that MATTEL should try to reproduce fashion style dolls like Superheroes from the marvel collection series line like they'd did in the early 90's and late millennium era of 2000 with less disappointments to our scenes also, less boring for being a collector. I love how Barbie has different characters during the 90's she can be a princess, fairy, mermaid, bride, American Indian/Native American and a superhero! Dear MATTEL please hear our prayers 🙏 to reproduce fashion style dolls like you did during the late millennium era of 2000

So what I would like from Mattel for their non-fantasty type dolls is clothing that looks like it would be worn by that age range. So, there is nothing wrong with the Kelly and Skipper range. They are wearing patterns, colors and styles that fit that age. Barbie on the other hand, is also wearing a fair amount of patterns, colors and styles that would work for Skippers age range. I know that they are selling to kids of a specific age range BUT, dolls of previous eras were dressing in age appropriate outfits. Day to Night Barbie from 1984 is a good example. The style of the clothing was what a young woman could have been wearing at the time but the color was the part that drew in a kid with the pink and sparkles. I am not wanting them to make Barbie look like she dresses at Fashion Nova but a bit more glamour and style would be wonderful instead of skirt and a t shirt or a little floral dress that would be worn for easter. If you think back to the My Scene line of dolls and the details, different fabrics and styles of the clothing pieces and then compare them to the Barbie Extra line.....Oooffff.
In the fantasy line they really should be doing more articulated mermaid bodies. Even a MTM with a removable fabric tail would be fine with people. And if they dont want to paint all those gems and flowers and details on the dolls....dont put them on. Heck, make a set for kids that is detailed and give them washable paint and the kids can paint up their own dolls!!! If I was a little girl walking down the toy aisle at walmart and I saw the recycled princess or mermaid dolls and then I saw Rainbow High and OMG LOL on the other side.....yeah. I know which one I would be excited for. And I know the pet thing is a sore spot for you, but if Mattel made realistic looking dogs, that had articulation? With nice fur? I would love me a well articulated Grey Hound for my barbie to lead around on a jeweled leash, flocked and NOT cartoonie.

The jett dawson aliexpress version on the totally hair line… it’s one thing to be cheap and tacky, but to go out of your way to copy everything in a desperate attempt to grab MGA’s consumer’s attention? It's nice that there are different textures for darker dolls, I love that, but all the dolls that have straight hair have just straight boring hair instead of some special hairdo's like the dolls in 2000's had. I don't watch Barbie movies so didn't know about "Brooklyn Barbie". That doesn't sound cool to me. The dark Barbie is actually named *Christie* , I hated when they started calling her "Barbie" in the 80s, it took away her identity. Later in the 90s they called her "Nikki" but soon went back to calling her "Barbie".
I disagree with your thought about hair play dolls; I hate when the hair is an unrealistic length. To me any hair length past the waist is annoying.

I'm sorry to everyone who loves these, but I hate all of them except the pink hair on the extra doll. I never thought the day would come when I would be most likely leaving Barbie for other dolls, but it has come. Over the last at least three years, if not more, I haven't liked any Barbies. I grew up with Barbie and they were always so beautiful and quality, but not anymore. Whoever is making the outfits just looks like they grab a bunch of fabric and sew it together even if it doesn't match. Their design ideas are trash to me; the colors are atrocious. As far as I'm concerned, Ruth Handler would be turning over in her grave if she saw what has happened to her dream and beautiful Barbies of the past :( Lately I'm actually looking at Rainbow dolls and maybe some others to take the place of Barbie as I don't know when they will ever bring back the beautiful dolls of the past. This saddens my heart so much :( Btw, does anyone know what happened to the new Bratz line I heard was supposed to come out months ago? I was thinking of trying one of them.

I don't care for the molded on tops either. They used to make snap on tops and Mattel should do that. Limiting the doll so you can't dress her defeats the purpose of Barbie.
I also just received the 2 twin teen dolls with the pups, they are named Jackson and Jayla and very cute. I haven't seen the Big City Big Dreams movie or the new one called " It takes two? Something like that anyway the Twins are supposed to be in the second movie.
I am thinking these mermaid dolls are looking so similar that Mattel figures we change the tail, hair and top and sell her, no one will notice she's the same doll done over and over again. I do like the new mermaid tails though. Other than that mattel is going to have to improve their line for me to buy them for myself or my granddaughter. Great video as usual, thanks.

I agree with you about the painted on clothing. I especially dislike it in the beach line dolls. The Ken dolls in the line have real trunks, why can't the Barbies have a real swimsuit like they used to? Makes them no fun to dress either, because the painted suit shows through the other outfits.

I loved Barbie as a child. But now I don’t, because the quality is so bad.

  • @rg1whiteywins598

Reason for the molded in clothing is for parents not having kids naked dolls laying around the house. They feel it's not appropriate when adult guests come over for dinner etc. Brooklyn Barbie has a new cute face. I really like her.

@@peacipessa yeah it's the weirdest reason I've heard. I bet this is a prudish American. Sadly, they dictate what Mattel should and shouldn't do. It's a doll. The clothing was removable so kids could mix and match plus Mattel made more money when parents had to buy new outfits which were also decent quality back in the 80s and before.

    • @rg1whiteywins598
      @rg1whiteywins598 2 года назад

@@rewghob I have actually heard it from parents. I think it's weird too because they are dolls. But to people with sorts of " important lifestyles" the impression they make on certain guests matters. I don't see a problem with that choice.

That last Brooklyn Barbie Mermaid is a direct ripoff of RH's Phaedra (change my mind, lol). I know - I would just love to see more articulation, period. And I agree that Mattel knows what we want - they just don't care.

Wow I am so disappointed with every last one of these dolls honestly 😞 I can't believe what Barbie has become 💔 I try not to be one of those people who speaks so negatively about current Mattel, but sheesh they're making it hard 😭 The amount of sculpted or painted on "clothes" these days. I cannot. And the excessive mix matched colors! Man... 😪

I think totally hair barbie reboot suffers from the fact it's trying to capture the 90s when the original was trying to capture the 60s/70s with its groovy pattern. I think if they just used the same pattern but different colors and cut. Like the same pattern, but it's a 2 piece now.

There are a couple here I will probably buy. The purple mermaid with the new face sculpt looks interesting. And the blue mermaid with the Tori face sculpt is so pretty. You have to imagine them on different bodies and with different outfits. I only ever look at hair and face now because I'm going to be changing all the rest.

Hello, I’m new here. Are all the dolls you mention for sale in the UK that you know of? I’ve tried to buy Jackson and Jayla (the twin children from big city, big dreams) but I can only find them in the US, I could get the shipped here at high costs but I’m holding fire in the hope they are coming here. Could you please tell where you read about the new mermaid movie please, I’m like a Barbie stalker 😆 and I’ve not seen anything about it.
