So why did Netflix think it was a good idea to cancel such a creative, critically acclaimed and wonderful series, with such possibilities and a vocal fan base? It's not like they're hard up for cash, so I'd be interested to hear their reasons why?
Especially one based on a film created by one of the greatest puppeteers, filmmakers and creative geniuses to ever grace this Earth?
I think it was because it was too expensive to make which is unfortunate.

Idk I think the story was kind of tied in neatly between the prequel season and the movie. Not much story left to tell unless you want to see the poor Glelvlings get killed

Such a shame that Netflix managed the launch so badly - the story, voice acting and realization are masterpieces. It is incredible how deep a story made by puppets bear more talent than 99% of thrash proposed these days.

I remember the day that I watched this, it was on the first Friday it had come out. I had been at work from 7 am until midnight and had just gotten home. Once there, I realized the show was out and I immediately binged four episodes, despite being bone tired. The show reinvigorated me and I was so damn happy. Beautiful imagery, lovely show. It should never have been cancelled by Netflix.

I've watched the whole series twice now and all I can say is that it's better than anything Disney has put out in the last 10 years. Including Marvel and Star Wars.
Unlike the new Star Wars trilogy on what they did to Luke, I’m glad Aughra didn’t get bastardized and the deconstruction treatment of “the crystal should had never been made” thing like Luke saying “Jedi must end” which would go against the character and glad they didn’t

The one thing that puts me off, is that they say the skesis built the observatory for Augra when it was actually there former counterparts. Thankfully they've corrected later on and I still love this intro.
I think it was deliberate. They didn’t want to reveal yet that the urSkeks existed.
@@BlackCover95 I can understand that, but for those of us who are fans of the original movie (like myself), they are known and established characters. It would have been nice to see them and the Great Division in this intro.
@@BlackCover95 also the urskeks were banished from their planet and used the crystal of truth to remove their evil so they must have done something very bad and i believe they said that the skeksis built her the observatory in exchange for the crystal cause it caused something bad ,also since SkekGra is the only skeksis who wanted to be rejoined maybe all except him where the ones with the idea of doing something bad so he was just impatient and grumpy

WOW, what a show! i finished it and the documentary.
Anyone who grew up with the 1982 Jim Henson fantasy classic who is either an 80s kid or a 90s kid (ones who saw it on video or on Disney Channel in the 90s) or even those who are 80s/90s kids hybrids like me (born 37 years ago and adored the movie for for 33 years since i was 4 when my parents bought me the movie on VHS at 4 then 25 years ago i rebought the movie on Disney's VHS when i was 12 in 94 then in 2000 i replaced the tape with DVD then in 2009 with blu-ray and last year i bought the ultraHD 4K BD which is my first UltraHD 4K BD purchase).
What do you get when you cross Game of Thrones, Heavy Metal (1981), Robert E Howard, Frank Herbert, George Martin, JRR Tolkein, Demolition Man (themes of so-called benevolent leaders where rebels can see greed and deception), Avatar (both airbender and Cameron), Fire and Ice (1983), Star Wars, Legend of Zelda and Fraggle Rock? you get this epic series.
I love the world building, different gelfling tribes, the origin of how Skektek got his eye removed and all that. Maybe in season 2 we'll get a flashback of how the Urseks came and split into the two different races. All in 10 60 minute episodes in a miniseries kind of way. Even some rousing action in episode 10.
And i hear there will be more mystics in season 2 and maybe in season 2 they can get Ron Perlman, Kevin Conroy, Jim Cummings, Frank Welker, Keith David, Brad Douriff, and Rob Paulsen. Skekung the other general turned Garthim master should be voiced by Charlie Adler.
This is using practical effects, animatronics, people in suits, puppets, cgi, models and all balanced together and is a passion project made by people who have an actual love of the original and honoring Henson's legacy and respecting the material just like Blade Runner 2049 was to Blade Runner as that was an excellent sequel.
It and Blade Runner 2049 succeeded where lazy halfassed passionless moneygrab attempts to bring properties like Ghostbusters, Robocop, Elm Street, Predator etc failed miserably. This looks like it's doing Jim proud! and nice cast too even Mark Hamil as the scientist.
Is no one going to talk about how the Crystal of Truth is there on its own and not inside the mountain which was carved by the UrSkeks?
Honestly, this all feels like a history lesson after the UrSkeks left, the Gelfling abandoned Thra, and Aughra was reclaimed by the planet itself.
In the book, "The World Of The Dark Crystal," J. J. Llewellyn speaks as if humans are exploring Thra, but the civilization there is long since gone.
Given how the UrSkeks are not mentionned but only the Skeksis, this is probably that, just storytelling from the only known sources in-universe

Jim Henson is dead, Frank Oz is retired, Steve Whitmire (the original puppeteer and voice of skekTek) is on bad terms with the Henson Company, Kathryn Mullen (Kira's puppeteer), I don't know where she is now, who knows where David Lazer (executive producer) is, Trevor Jones didn't come back to write the score, and the original voice actors are retired or dead. Only Dave Goelz (Fizzgig's puppeteer), Louise Gold (skekAyuk's puppeteer) and Brian Froud (the guy who designed all the creatures) have returned.

This is supposed to be a prequel but I don't get it. I thought that the mystics and the skeksis were one, until the crystal cracked and divided them creating two separate races. This prequel makes it seem like the Skeksis were Invaders from another planet that Came From Another World to invade and Conquer Thra. Now granted I haven't seen the series yet I have not seen one episode yet so I may be jumping the gun but being someone that saw the original film in the theaters in 1982 when I was 10 years old this prequel seems a little misleading after seeing the trailer. As always only people who did not grow up with the original film would buy into this, and I'm not one of them. Still it is a great feeling to see all of the races of gelflings before they were wiped out by the skeksis. I also noticed that Jen is not in it so I don't know how many years or centuries this takes place before Jen found The Shard and restored the crystal and restored the planet back to its Glory.
Of course they were as the Urseks as in the graphic novels Creation Myths it shows the origin of the crystal and how the Urseks arrived on Thra and how they experimented on the crystal as it separated them into Skeksis and UrRu and one of the Skeksis broke a shard from the crystal.
The Urseks origin is explained in episode 7, just watch the series. This series take place 26 years before the movie and set before the Garthim wars which season 2 will be about the Garthim wars.
@@Johnlindsey289 Personally, I'd like to see the banishing of the 18 from the UrSkek Collective. We only get to see one depiction of their homeworld in Creation Myths, but what were the other UrSkeks like? I get the feeling that they had a kind of gestalt hive mind, and the 18 disturbed the harmony of their collective with dark thoughts and impulses. In a way, the 18 are like fallen angels who were cast out of Heaven, and Thra is their "Hell." Upon their arrival, I imagine SoSu saying something akin to, "It is better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven." UrSkek Paradise Lost!

**SPOILERS FOR THE DARK CRYSTAL (1982) AND AoR**
Ok so I know they corrected this later in the series, but the Skeksis didn't take hold of the crystal from Augra, they were the urSkeks and their experiments shattered the crystal and split them into the uRu and the Skeksis, according to the 1982 film (and EPisode 7 of AoR). So this brings up two questions. Why didn't Augra know? And since we know this will be retconned later, why is this narration off? We don't see Sigourney Weaver play any specific character, she only did this intro. Either this will be answered in season two, I missed something, or it was a mistake and I don't know which it is. Does anyone have any thoughts or information?
One small point-- the UrSkeks didn't shatter the Crystal; it was the Skeksis who did that. Jen even sees the event in the Shard. According to the scene, it appears to be SkekShod who struck and broke the Crystal of Truth.

It takes place after the crystal was cracked. The crystal cracked after they split when a confused and angry skeksis hit it. They split during the second great conjunction because they were not in harmony.

Without spoiling it, yes, they stay true to the story. Frankly, it's one of the best scenes, too. The one where the history of the events is recounted by a couple of unlikely characters. :)
The UrSkeks didn't crack the Crystal of Truth. They shattered themselves because "Dark Heart" was a troubled soul who wasn't in harmony with himself nor the others. After the UrSkeks failed to burn away their impurities and suffered the Great Division, it was a Skeksis who struck and cracked the Crystal. If you watch the movie, the Shard reveals this event to Jen as he gazes into it. Right afterwards, he meets Kira (who was most likely called by the Shard itself without her being consciously aware of it).

Unfortunately with the Netflix series started a lot of confusions with the Dark Crystal timeline. The only "true" sources are, I
think: the original 1982 movie, the story from A.C.H. Smith, and The World of the DC from Lewellyn.
So: A) in the Beginning the crystal was in a cave, in a mountain with a shaft to the suns
B) when the UrSkeks came, they built, for example 1. the castle out of that mountain, 2. Aughra´s observatory
C) with next Great Conjunction the (from their original world) "fallen" UrSkeks wanted to purify themselves .
D) for that purpose the so-called "camber of life" was built, the later laboratory of SkekTek,
and also that system of mirrors to catch the light of the crystal. In the next age SkekTek misused that mirror
for draining the essence. -So WHY that other machinery in Netflix series??
E) the "purification" ended, as we know, in the perfect division into Skeksis ans UrRu
F) Just after that ( only minutes, maybe 1 hour later ?!) the Skeksis split the Crystal ! The shard flew off the castle.
G) According to The World of the DC the Garthim were made around 300 trine after the Skeksis appeared.
H) The Garthim are just hollow inside , "driven only by the evil forces of the darkened crystal and the pittyless mind of
SkekUng" ( with the reunification according to movie they break just into liveless shells ); they never where any
real living creature. Sop, of course they where in No way created out of dead Arathim
I) when the Garthim where made, Skeksis already took slaves and drew essence, from Podling, and from Gelfling
K) Before the Garthim were made, the Gelflings searched for the shard; in order to prevent that the Skeksis made
5 or 6 false copies of the shard. The Gelflings could not find out the right one, they gave all shards to Aughra.
( so the true shard of course never was hidden in a sword or so...)
L) so, the creation of the Prophecy , the beginning of the Garthim wars..and so on all that was around 300 trine
after Skeksis (and UrRu) began, and Not so close to next Great Conjunction ( only 1 generation before) at all!
