I'll bet the Wanderer is purposely drawing out his introduction just to watch his counterpart go apeshit. He's capable of talking normally when necessary.
Well, the Skeksis are all about desire and instant gratification. The Heretic isn't really an exception, his desire just happens to be constructive and benevolent. But that doesn't keep him from going crazy from impatience because what he wants is right in front of him but he still can't have it.

I really like that the creators made the tongues move. It really helps give a bit more life to the characters when they speak. Not just mouths flapping up and down.
The little CGI accents like tongues and brow movements add so much life to the characters, it was a good call to have those effects to supplement the puppetry. Although, Rian always still looks a little bit sleepy.
Heretic made me actually audibly laugh out loud, which doesnt happen a lot when i watch stuff. Andy samberg did a great job. I didnt even know it was him
I love these two! Until told otherwise, I choose to believe that they stayed peacefully in the desert until the next Great Conjunction, where they were joined together when Jen healed the Crystal!
@@kelaarin I have gone seen this: Those aren't robes, but table mantles, and these don't match with his robe color scheme (all white with red paint). Remember, when skekGra shut down Lore he put the Talisman on a table. He didn't have it with him when we last see Them. He may have been stabbed by skekMal in the hand, but I doubt that would be fatal as he had a bandage. Is likely the two ran off after their hiding spot had been discovered by skekMal, and since he did stated they were fugitives, this seems to be the more likely scenario, escaping through the Breath of Thra. Update: after Watching skekMal's attack again, Brea grabbed the Talisman trying to reawaken Lore and when skekMal takes her, the sudden shove actually threw the Talisman away. So it was even less on the Heretic at that point.
@@kelaarin Hup said himself: When urVa was waking up Hup was about to run and seek help, but urVa stopped him on that moment. Who else would Hup had gone to for Help in the middle of a the desert?
one of the best things about the show is how they were willing to come up with their own unique characters and scenarios which ADD dimension to the original films foundation rather than subtract or "subvert" from it. Lookin at you star wars
The Heretic is actually quite close personality wise to how the Skeksis were before they let their fear of death and desire for power overcome their morality. Yes he's impatient and irritable but he's also good hearted deep down and helpful to the other races of Thra.
I really like how they’re showing the dynamics of the Skeksis and UrRu being more complex than just good and evil. In this case the two halves get along and are actually both (comparatively) good.
UrGoh & skekGra might be my favorite characters. I'm so sad that the only two UrSkeks that deserved to be reunified perished before they could. I hope they were rejoined in the next life.
Now hold on. They were banished from the crystal castle, so they weren't in the direct presence of the darkening. We know the corrupted crystal caused the Skeksis to deteriorate rapidly. Maybe they were in good enough physical shape to survive? After all, the Hunter was remarkably fit, had the strength of ten Skeksis, and he lived a nomadic life. It's unlikely, but maaaaybe they just barely ran out the clock?
@@MadamFoogie We saw their robes discarded when Hup took Lore's crystal, so it seems that either they went for a streak, or they both passed on to hopefully a better, joined existence

"Mystics! Four arms, but only two legs, and neither good for much!" What a hilariously grouchy Skeksis XD And who'd have guessed he's voiced by Johnny from Hotel Transylvania?
From the moment I saw these two, I fell in love. The fact that they contrast each other in personality makes their dynamic very entertaining, and I love the concept of a Skeksis and their UrRu counterpart living together and wanting to be united as one again. Having seen the movie and everything though, it breaks my heart knowing that it's very likely these two will die before their soul is reunited, unless for some reason the writers pull a retcon (which wouldn't be truthful to the original's lore, in that case ... ) It's sad knowing that they very much wanted to be whole again.
Absolutely love this dynamic of an evil half and a good half living together in harmony as friends. Seeking to repair imbalance together. Perhaps it’s a metaphor. A truly healthy person has achieved a balance and a harmony, of the positive and negative aspects of themselves.
I was wondering if the Skeksis from the concept art had any purpose in the Dark Crystal universe! Now I know...exposition and was kicked out by his own kind for making a point!
Yeah, when I saw that red paint/tattoo/whatever on his face, I recognized him instantly. Its' so cool that they decided to use the original concept art it such a unique way.
*Heritic:* "You know when we become one again. I hope our true self isn't intoxicated by whatever your smoking". *UrGoh:* "Eh...Its...all...fine...dude".
with all the previews and new images I was most interested in seeing The Heretic, I was imagining maybe him and the Ritual Master didn't get along. That there may be a bit of rivalry between them. Just watching this clip makes me like the Heretic even more! :D
The Heritic used to be the Conqueror until he and his mystic counterpart recieved a vision that showed that their kind would reunite again. When he tried to convince the other skeksis about this he was brandedva heritic and banished.
Upon watching this first time, I just thought The Heretic was a cackling loony for comedy alone. But actually it makes great sense now! THESE 2 HAVE WAITED FOR CENTURIES to have their story finally told and the mission to start in order fill the prophecy. For a Mystic maybe the long wait is fine, they are full of wise calm patience. But to an impulsive and emotional Skeksis, this long wait must have been SO EXHAUSTING FOR HIM. He not only longs to be whole; but he is probably just SO sick of waiting and being abandoned by his clan. No wonder he acts so giddy and overjoyed at their arrival! He's basically screaming AT FINALLY LAST! HALLELUJAH! TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH!
I absolutely adore the Heretic and the Wanderer! Such a brilliant comedic couple. Not to mention a wondeful, sad story, with these two wanting desperately to be joined back together. :)
I was laughing so hard at this, I loved these two. I know they're retconning but I wish these two could have been at the great conjunction, and btw in the book The World Of the Dark Crystal the skekGra is a younger Skeksis, they actually looked like that. And is it just me or do they seem like an old gay couple? ... I can just see these two showing up for the Great Conjunction late and then the skekGra the Heretic yelling at urGoh "he" knew they'd be late! And the cool think about skekGra he's wearing urSkek robe patterns... And this is so my high side vs my regular side
Him having such good relationship with himself is really inspiring, we all must learn to love ourselves better and have a better relationship with ourselves
I was a huge fan of the original movie. I was so worried what this series would be like. They killed it!! I am so happy and could not love this series anymore.
I think this is a really good concept in regards to mortality. The skeksis want to be immortal, however they look ugly even with the essence they drink. But the mystics look beautiful, and they have no desire to live forever. It is a mind bender, but it’s a lovely idea.
Elise Marshall I think they’re beautiful too, in an old Jedi master kind of way. Yoda was 900 years old but retained his grace and elegance, both of which were accentuated by his preference to live in nature. The mystics also live in the wilds and immerse themselves in that which gives them life, rather than steal life as their dark halves do.
who else found this mind blowing that there is a good Skeksis i mean how often do you hear the word good with the word Skeksis in the same sentence meaning their a good guy?
Considering that they are the only ones that can coexist together without being one whole entity, probably pretty mild and even tempered. I would dare say that they were the youngest and most idealistic of the Urskeks
100% adorable. I love their opera which is them both being at peace and at one with each other. Just making music in true harmony even if it is strange song. Adorable. Also Lore could have been really useful later on. I am glad, I did not get to see these two cuties die.
Well this, Blade Runner 2049 and Cobra Kai are ones that are 80s retro property revivals done right! they were done with talented people, passion, people who understand the material and all. Better than lazy halfassed horrible attempts like Robocop, Elm Street, Ghostbusters etc. as they failed miserably because of director who don't care for the material but a paycheck, poor writers who don't get the material and characters and bastardnizes the material.
Have you noticed how much the location has this 'light' theme? All warm and golden? Obviously it's "the Circle of the Suns", but... well, UrSkeks are described as 'luminous' beings. Perhaps it's not just aesthetic or coincidence that the only place where a divided pair lives together has taken on that quality?
They are based on the main characters in fear and loathing in Las Vegas. According to the backstory they smoked a lot and ate a lot of hallucinagetic "berries" to help them see the vision they had 😂😂
the chamberlain might be the closest. yes, he is the one who suggested consuming gelfling essence to begin with, but he is the most pragmatic. the motivation was simply that their kind needed to live a little bit longer. he also wanted to keep the peace to begin with, as he knew that conflict could easily spell the doom, and was most disturbed by seeing how readily his kind fell into debauchery. and h himself refrained from joining into that debauchery. and he was right in the end. the skeksi's debauchery lead to their downfall. they lost all the gelflings, became rulers of a hollow kingdom. the emperor died a slow agonizing death, his mind completely lost. all because they did not listen to the chamberlain.
The best part is that urGoh is entirely capable of speaking normally, as we see in the puppet show. He's literally just doing it to annoy skekGra.

Botye Bence Right?? It’s pretty much one of the best examples of balancing professional voice actors, amateur voice actors and celebrities in a voice cast
I really like that the creators made the tongues move. It really helps give a bit more life to the characters when they speak. Not just mouths flapping up and down.
cgi tongues but put in so well that you struggle to realize that.
The little CGI accents like tongues and brow movements add so much life to the characters, it was a good call to have those effects to supplement the puppetry. Although, Rian always still looks a little bit sleepy.
I swear, the Heretic steals the show for me every time he’s on screen
Edit: sorry for the misspelling
He really does
my favorite character
He my favorite of skeksis next the Chamberlin and the hunter
He took over Thra, now he must take over the scene

Heretic made me actually audibly laugh out loud, which doesnt happen a lot when i watch stuff. Andy samberg did a great job. I didnt even know it was him
Andy was definitely having a lot of fun voicing this guy

I love Brea’s expression reacting to Heretic annoyingly shouting wanderer
Offensive side eye 💀
LOL!! Those two could have their own spin-off show...like a series of one or two-minute shorts!
I wish I could. If nothing else, I'll run it by them, though.
For the love of god, do it. The world needs a heretic/ urgoh show.
If i ever turn old than Heretic would be my spirit animal.
Nice 👍
He's grandparent goals
I love these two! Until told otherwise, I choose to believe that they stayed peacefully in the desert until the next Great Conjunction, where they were joined together when Jen healed the Crystal!
@@kelaarin I have. urVa died, but I didn't see any sign of those two being hurt.
They'd still need the light of the 3-suns focused through the healed crystal for reunification. Still, one can hope...
@@Ozraptor4 Maybe, that isn't expressly stated.
They almost feel like Yoda if he was split in two.
Yoda and gollum walk into a bar...
But actually helpful and not full of shit.
I thought their voices were noticeably similar. Thought that might be on purpose.
That is freakin' perfect!
Accurate.
one of the best things about the show is how they were willing to come up with their own unique characters and scenarios which ADD dimension to the original films foundation rather than subtract or "subvert" from it. Lookin at you star wars
The Heretic is actually quite close personality wise to how the Skeksis were before they let their fear of death and desire for power overcome their morality. Yes he's impatient and irritable but he's also good hearted deep down and helpful to the other races of Thra.
Stinger Johnny He’s also in much better shape physically than the others. He has all his teeth and has a healthier complexion than his fellow Skeksis.
WorldWar2freak94 yeah the only skeksi like him physically is the Hunter. Seems the two healthiest Skeksis are the ones more in tuned with thra
A mystic and a Skeksis living together?

I got the ghostbusters reference!!!
If I had to pick a favorite character that wasn't the Chamberlain, The Heretic would certainly be it.
@@bunganut98 She's cool. I respect any decision that isn't a gelfling.
@Jasper Sergio I like Deet okay, but she's the best of the Gelfling and still not as good as the least of the Skeksis.
Mickey E yes but what about podlings?
@@bigpigeon2384 Fuck podlings.
Mickey E Even Hup?!
That’s not all, the Heretic is completely uncontaminated by the dark crystal. Sure he had some at first, he was off the that since then.
How he's like what happens when someone manages to quit smoking for ten years. Lungs almost completely recover
I like the Heretic, he's silly!
huh, for a Skeksis, he seems ok.
He probably became my favorite.
He happens to be played by Andy Samberg which is good btw
@Julie Walker The Skesis get a bad wrap. Only a few of them are really that bad.
Mickey E a good portion are still jerks...
I really like how they’re showing the dynamics of the Skeksis and UrRu being more complex than just good and evil. In this case the two halves get along and are actually both (comparatively) good.
well the heretic used to be evil. extremely.
toomanyaccounts going back to the uncommon dynamics

UrGoh & skekGra might be my favorite characters. I'm so sad that the only two UrSkeks that deserved to be reunified perished before they could. I hope they were rejoined in the next life.
Nah knowing these two and how they act they probably showed up late for the Great Conjunction

There’s so much love care and detail put into this series and it’s an absolute treasure.
If this is how these two act now, I wonder how they acted when they were whole!
As the only two who genuinely wanted reunification, it's a shame they didn't make it to the Great Conjunction.
@@Ozraptor4 Yeah. Stuck out in the middle of the desert.
@@Ozraptor4 Perhaps, they were somehow able to do it independently. (That's just being hopeful though)
Probably very different, because one half "kills" he other half when together.

"Mystics! Four arms, but only two legs, and neither good for much!" What a hilariously grouchy Skeksis XD And who'd have guessed he's voiced by Johnny from Hotel Transylvania?
I was shocked to see a Skeksis with its Mystic. I couldn't really trust Heretic when fist meeting him because Skesis are evil. He's cool I guess.
It's crazy that this is andy samberg and bill hader. When I found that out I was shocked. They did great. Everyone did. It was just a masterpiece.
*Heritic:* "You know when we become one again. I hope our true self isn't intoxicated by whatever your smoking".
*UrGoh:* "Eh...Its...all...fine...dude".

"That doesn't even make any sense!"
"... It's just a question, man."
I love urgohs wisdom
I've been trying to think of a scenario in which his statement makes sense. So far though, I've come up empty-handed.
The Wanderer give a sigh followed up with a "ya", he knew it didn't make sense after he said it.
“URGOH! GET OUT HERE AND GREET OUR GUESTS!”
I love that line.
What a show. Every minute of this beautiful accomplishment is magic.
with all the previews and new images I was most interested in seeing The Heretic, I was imagining maybe him and the Ritual Master didn't get along.
I would've thought a good skeksis was idiotic and ridiculous before I saw this.
.....and it is, in the best possible way.
"Say it! Just say "wanderer"! Just get it out there! YOUR NAME IS URGOH THE WANDERER!"
Gets me EVERY TIME! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I absolutely adore the Heretic and the Wanderer! Such a brilliant comedic couple. Not to mention a wondeful, sad story, with these two wanting desperately to be joined back together. :)
I have no idea what’s going on here, but Andy and Bill’s characters act like an old married couple.
Yeah they do! I wonder if those low bass notes were Bill Hader's!
They are one being split in two.

"SkekGra can't barely control SkekGra!"
compared to the others of his kin Heretic aged quite well.
I think the implication is that all the evil actually made them age worse. They apparently used to look quite beautiful.
I think this is a really good concept in regards to mortality. The skeksis want to be immortal, however they look ugly even with the essence they drink. But the mystics look beautiful, and they have no desire to live forever. It is a mind bender, but it’s a lovely idea.
@@elisemarshall4957 The Mystics don't lool that good. They just don't look like they're literally rotting away.
Carly Crays I’ve always thought the mystics look beautiful, it is their aesthetic I love. Haha, just shows I am one of very few that think this 🤣
Elise Marshall I think they’re beautiful too, in an old Jedi master kind of way. Yoda was 900 years old but retained his grace and elegance, both of which were accentuated by his preference to live in nature. The mystics also live in the wilds and immerse themselves in that which gives them life, rather than steal life as their dark halves do.
So how many noticed that the titles of the episodes were quotes from the movie?

Props for them bringing back a 30-year old film as a tv series and staying true to the original while making it something new.
Take notes, Disney.
This show deserved a LOT more attention.
Yup it's a masterpiece of art
Have you noticed how much the location has this 'light' theme? All warm and golden? Obviously it's "the Circle of the Suns", but... well, UrSkeks are described as 'luminous' beings. Perhaps it's not just aesthetic or coincidence that the only place where a divided pair lives together has taken on that quality?
Anyone else getting a hippie vibe from these two? Especially with UrGoh smoking what looks like a hookah?

A Skeksis that is not trying to kill Gelflings? *WHAT IS THIS?!*
Someone who wants to be whole again
Heresy
the chamberlain might be the closest.
yes, he is the one who suggested consuming gelfling essence to begin with, but he is the most pragmatic. the motivation was simply that their kind needed to live a little bit longer. he also wanted to keep the peace to begin with, as he knew that conflict could easily spell the doom, and was most disturbed by seeing how readily his kind fell into debauchery. and h himself refrained from joining into that debauchery.
and he was right in the end. the skeksi's debauchery lead to their downfall. they lost all the gelflings, became rulers of a hollow kingdom. the emperor died a slow agonizing death, his mind completely lost. all because they did not listen to the chamberlain.
