My! It must have been quite the hazardous journey for the institute to study the skeksis! A human would surely look like a big gelfling, _ripe for draining._ Hhhhmmmmm? Yes?
I don't know if you could drain a human. There alien to Thra so they might have an odd reaction if any to the crystal. Also because of how human religions are most humans would rather die then let there essence or soul as they call it, be taken from them.
@@beastwarsFTW I doubt the willing intent to let the Crystal draw out one's essence is necessary - every Gelfling I saw looked less that willing when theirs were drawn out, and skekTek's own essence was drawn out even as he protested for it to stop. Speaking of which, the latter still happened even though he is by all means an alien, so I think a human would have an unpleasant experience at least. As for whether any essence would be made is another story however... Then again, I am only working with what is presented in the Age of Resistance show.
I can still remember, somewhat vaguely, how they drain the life essence from their prisoners, and it's effect on the victim. Scariest shit I've ever watched back then.
@Scheffelmeier They are kinda like Slaanesh with Tzeentch aesthetic...for the most part. skekGra, skekMal and skekSa are outliers in that they aren't really that hedonistic.
Guess there was no time to mention him, but my favorite Skeksi is SkekGra the Heretic (from the Netflix show), who grew to desire re-union with his counterpart. I guess I love how even though he is still naturally ill-tempered and impatient, even a being essentially composed of negative energy can still be a force for good.
Fascinating overview of Thra. If anyone wants to know more, I would recommend the book, The World of the Dark Crystal which contains the original concept art and writing for the film. It's about to be re-issued. There is some question over the nature of the Skeksis when they were first "born". It is possible that they had some positive aspects to their characters, but these degraded over the years due to their lack of control of their base desires. It was said that only SkekNah the Slave Master was openly evil from the start and he was notably absent from the Castle during the events of the series.
I'd recommend watching the original movie first, knowing the end of the saga did nothing to diminish the story, it actually added suspense to it, wich is quite unusual (other way around most of the time), it will also make the transition to modern and better special effects you see in the netflix series less jarring.
It's funny because SkekMal the Hunter never used the elixirs, and was still the physically strongest and most feared of them. So they didn't even need to turn people into juice to live, they could have just ran around in the wilds killing things and getting plenty of exercise and fresh air, and they would have been fine

The Age Of Resistance series made clear that, by the end of their reign, the Skeksis were effectively vestigal lords who had destroyed their own empire, and weren't actually ruling anyone. Instead, they were merely a gaggle of Robber Barons cloistered in their fortress, relying on their Garthim raiders to provide for their needs while they wasted their time with pointless court intrigues. They issued no decrees and received no tithes, and amounted to nothing more than relics of a bygone era that they had brought crashing down through their own actions, and what little power and influence they retained was thanks purely to their possession of the Crystal.
Having the story outlined like this really helped. Having seen the original movie I knew that they Skeksis and the mystics joined together to form a new whole, I didn't know that they were originally like that, or that their attempts to return from whence they came split them. Also, now that I'm older looking back you realise that the Gelflings are f@#$ed, there's no way those two could make enough babies and even then the inbreeding would be horrendous.
They were actually 18 but 2 Skeksis died soon after the split. Skek-Zok the Ritual Master has always been my favorite. He's pompous and lavishly dressed and has an air of authority about him!

I have a fan theory that the draining of power from the Dark Crystal did more damage than good. Consider how little time The Hunter spent at the castle, and The Heretic’s 300 trine of exile, and yet these two seem much more healthy and vibrant than the other skeksis. I think they still age, but the power from the Crystal is more like an addiction; it brings you higher, but ultimately with diminishing returns.

Lots of great info... but where do you get that the "residence called it the Dark Crystal"? As far as I know they call it the Crystal of Truth or just The Crystal. Regarding Age of Division that happened at the conjunction split of the UrSkeks,... the clans came much later than that, though still within that Age but it didn't begin that age. Rian only injured SkekVar, it was SkekSil who ultimately "stuck him down".
Well the UrSkeks they came from are the advanced aliens. The Skeksis, when they were born from the UrSkeks splitting into 2, had to learn all of this technology by themselves again. They also seem to still rely on Thra for most of their tech and structures, because why advance your science when you can just take what's already there?
It also had to do with the technology and resurces that was available on Thra at the time. The Urskes did advance the Gelfling's tech over the millennia but in order to do interstellar travel they had to use the crysial at a very specific time called "the great conjunction," During an attempt to go to their home the Urskes were split into the Skeskies and that Urru. Also, the Urskes's world has it's own crysital that was used to send the 16 to Thra.
What do you mean primitive? They seem as though they’re in a medieval era, yet the Skeksis use several cybernetics on the world and themselves. Their technology is fairly advanced, considering the majority are lazy politicians. Their counterparts, the urRu, are far more primitive technologically, but that’s their chosen path & nature
