This movie scared the hell out of me as a child but as a teen and adult, I am always entranced by how much thought and artistry went into the making of this masterpiece. I truly think this was Jim Henson’s magnum opus and where his heart truly lay.
It indeed has it's scary moments but I still loved this movie as a kid. I can't remember how many times I watched it (my mom recorded it on VHS for me). I even made a skeksis out of paper magé when I was 9, my mom made the clothes. Jim Henson was a genius.
@@liriomusic4391 CGI may not be as good as practical effects, but to say it is cheap is an insult to FX artists. Speaking from experience and interaction with real people who actually work in the industry, CGI is not, I repeat, CGI is NOT cheap! The time and effort to render a single character per scene and shot is an absurdly long time. TLDR: CGI isn’t cheap so stop making up excuses to shit on not only your biased disdain towards a simple tool but your lack of consideration and ignorance as well! Shame on you

If anything I would imagine he sons studios would be very different if he did survive and went on to bring the company into the next century
I think that's going a bit far. I love the MCU and it's absolutely true that all different kinds of movies have their place. You don't HAVE to put down something else just to try and make your point or your favorite media look better, you know. So, no, you're being very unfair. The Dark Crystal is absolutely fantastic, still holds up brilliantly today.... But audiences are ALSO sometimes in the mood to watch Barbie, The Super Mario Bros Movie, and Deadpool & Wolverine, and it's not fair of you to be negatively judging them for that. Everything deserves the chance to appeal to and resonate with the audience those things are for without having them insulted by an elitist.
I always love the one part where the Skesis gets burned, and when his Mystic half explodes into fire the others are like "huh. anyway" like they dont even give a shit. its hilarious
I dunno about hilarious. Poignant, maybe. The Skeksies are all greed, vain and materialistic self-interest, the Mystics care about the world and everything else but themselves and have no sense of preservation or care what happens to themselves. They are literally the opposite, and it shows how that's not entirely a good thing.
The Italian dub actually has the Skeksis shout "Haakskeekah", yet the rest of the dialogue is in Italian. It's almost as if the dub artists wanted to pay tribute to the original version. EDIT: Yet more clues. The Italian dub has skekSil say to Jen that the prophecy was what caused "Gelfling slaughter", a line taken directly from the workprint rather than the theatrical cut, where it was sanitised to "all this trouble". Furthermore, when skekOk sees the Mystics march into the castle, he shrieks "Oh no, not urZah!", a name that's never heard in the theatrical cut.
You think they somehow got a cut where they didn't remove that line? I remember something similar happened with the first fist of the north star animated film, where Italy somehow got a completely uncut and uncensored version of the film on VHS when even the original Japanese release had to tone down the violence with blue filters and such.
@@ginogatash4030 I think what happened was that there was a genuine desire to honour the workprint version, because the "haakskeekah" you hear is from the Italian voice actors, not an undubbed line. Also, when the Chamberlain talks to Kira and Jen at the Gelfling ruins, he straight up says "Prophecy caused gelfling slaughter", a line translated directly from the original workprint. In the English theatrical cut, he says the much less harsh "Prophecy caused all this trouble".
@@samrizzardi2213 I find that hard to believe, MAYBE it's possible that there was a huge nerd fan of the director working on the dub, but I think it's more likely that they sent an alternative version of the film by mistake, that sort of thing has happened before to different films and the director of the film isn't particularly more popular in Italy as far as I know, maybe I'm wrong or we're both wrong, but to me a production mistake seems like the more plausible explanation if I had to guess.
@@ginogatash4030 accidentally sent a version no one has ever heard of before and the amount of crap about this mobile online is now near infinite vs people loving something that is from an omega popular creator. You are thinking of something less likely, not more.
@@xBINARYGODx he's not that well known outside of the US, or rather the stuff he did is pretty well known but he himself isn't that mainstream I rarely ever hear anyone say his name or talk about him specifically outside of the English speaking demographic, productions can sometime fuck things up, is it really that unlikely they sent a version of the film where they didn't fully remove all the weird noises in the audio by mistake and the actors just worked based on that audio track? it seems a little too random if that's the only change they did, your theory depends on having people in the dubbing studio actually knowing about the author and early cuts of the film themselves, which isn't impossible but it's really hard for that to happen.
I remember watching The Dark Crystal as a kid, and I fell in love with the movie. I later did some deep research into the backstory behind the movie, and found out that there was an entire mythology revolving around the planet known as Thra and its three suns. The number 3 and triangles were strongly featured throughout the movie.

Not sure if this has been commented upon, as there’s a ton of comments. But I’m a film editor and have been around long enough to cut actual film on a flatbed editor. Those vertical sliding black lines that occur on the workprint around where a later dissolve will be is actually the editor using a black wax pencil to mark all the frames over which an intended dissolve will later be added in an optical pass process.
@@ClayLiford No problem! Thanks for sharing all that info, I wasn't aware of how that all worked. How do they do a fade with film anyway? do they just start rubbing out parts of the image and then tape two reels together?
What I loved about this film(Dark Crystal being my 3rd fav franchise out of 10) is one of the few dark aspects you can have with fantasy. It came at a time when not even thing that was considered adult or conventional for all audiences to watch didn't hinder a runaway imagination, this movie didn't require celebrities voice talents, annoying side kicks, or songs written to be implanted in your mind 24/7. Dark Crystal literally and visually take you to "Another world, another time, in the age wonder" An analogy to the late 70s to 2000s when fantasy and art could be taking and enjoyed not forced to be best of the year like todays media. Childrens entertainment at the time didn't focus on censoring rather experiencing.
I've never gotten over Jim's passing. I loved almost everything he did. That's saying something because his career had a very long span. I especially love the idea that if you don't have a punchline, just blow up the muppet.

I knew that Jim Henson had experience making darker Muppet based properties; for example, the Wilkins Coffee commercials in the 60s. The Dark Crystal felt perfect for kids to challenge themselves with more grim family films. Unnerving, fascinating, and devoid of being too lighthearted.
Dark Crystal went from a box office bomb, to now be regarded as a Fantasy Film Masterpiece, worthy of mention alongside other great fantasy works like Lord of the Rings.
He sold muppets to Disney and maintained some ownership and control with funding so he can make more projects but then he mysteriously died and Disney got everything muppets

Fun Fact: Netflix employees risked their lives entering a burning building to save the original Henson puppets from a fire that ended up destroying the entire warehouse
The Dark Crystal was one of the few movies that had such a major impact on me growing up. Even now, it's one of my all time favorite dark fantasy movies.
Loved the dark crystal and the Age of Resistance. Anyone remember Fraggle Rock's "Terrible Tunnel" episode? What a creative way this guy introduced overcoming fear to young kids. So many subconscious lessons learned in his shows. Where did this kind of creativity go? Bring it back, please.
I know Jim Henson all my life for the Muppet Show. I didnt knew Dark Crystal existed, since i first saw on Netflix Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. In a heartbeat i got hooked and i fell in love with everything in it. A complete work of art with so beautiful story, loveable characters, even the bad ones (i worship Chamberlain and Skexis in general). Then i found out the movie. And i was so full of joy. What a masterpiece! I am very frustrated with the fact Netflix cancelled these series. I was looking forward to see again Gelflings, Skexis in new stories, but when money talks.... What an incredibly genius, smart, beautifull piece of art!
I love it, I absolutely love this movie. A classic from my childhood and genuine art. It's so unapologetically honest and just dark enough, and it's certainly the most masterful pure puppet work I have ever seen. They didn't need CGI back then -- this was pure talent and imagination, and a hell of a lot of work.
Totally agree. You need that level of darkness, in my opinion, in order for their to be any sort of real impact when the main hero finally overcomes it

I hope at some point, Dark Crystal will be revisited and reworked for a new audience. It was incredibly disappointing to have Dark Crystal resistance canceled after a season. But knowing what happens to the Gelflings in later years, it is probably for the best we don't witness the horror of the Gelfling genocide.
I assume they were going have the Gelfings have a pocket of survivors that hide away from the Skeksis as the finale, so it's not Jen and Kira trying repopulate the entire planet themselves.
The showrunners of the show said there was going to be more hope for the Gelflings than anyone would think if the series would continue. Also, it could be renewed on another streaming service.
This movie was so amazing, it really shaped my childhood. I was watching Dark Crystal a lot as a kid the movie gave a sense of wonder and discovery sadly a movie like this could never be green lit today because the movie series want to do nothing but remakes and sequels instead of something new
I can remember seeing a video copy when we still had movie rental buildings, but didn't rent it because it showed mainly the Skeksis, so my first introduction to the story as a child was a picture book that displayed Jen and Kira, falling in love with it because the 'fairies' were different than the Tinker Bell motifs. Still have the book to this day! Then, I rediscover the original movie on Netflix. Fell in love with it the first minute, and I wondered why I didn't grab this movie as a kid! I would've loved it as I love the prequel series and the aftermath comics of 'sevety-five years later'. Beautiful story, phenomenal artwork! Glad Jim bought back this beautiful gem! ^^

What a great video. Easily the best one you made yet. The Dark Crystal is my favorite movie and I am so glad to see someone covering the lost media related to this masterpiece. I honestly agree with your opinion on the original cut. While there are some extended scenes that I would have loved to see in the film's final cut, I think The Dark Crystal would not be the same movie we have all come to love. Still, it would be nice to see a completely polished version of the extended cut, maybe as an optional special feature like the star wars 2006 DVDs did with the second special feature disc containing the original.
This film had such an influence on me. As kids my friend and I used to draw panelled cartoons based on Fizgig and his world. Such an imaginative movie. I love it.

Jim I hope you know just how much everything you have done. Has brought joy to everyone who's seen it. RIP good sir, also thank you for putting this up
I can’t say exactly what age I first saw this film, but I don’t recall being frightened as some mention. I was born in ‘78 so it was likely at a fairly early age. I absolutely loved it then and enjoy it now. My 9 year old currently loves its’ fantasy lore and is hoping like so many others for a continuation of Resistance.
Really interesting. I've seen the cut scenes from various media from the old VHS onward over the years. I think that the one point where the original worked slightly better was in the Trial By Stone scene. The original script had SkekUng challenge SkekSil, but the English language cut reversed it, which didn't make much sense seeing how weedy the Chamberlain was in comparison to the Garthim Master.
I was a kid when my mom took me to see this movie. Parents in the 80s thought this was a child friendly film... it was NOT... NOT for children under 12... To this day this film gives me uneasy shivers in my spine because I saw it when I about 7 years old.
Same here. I was 6. Nowadays, I'm so desensitized to scary movies and horror that pretty much nothing scares me, but just the thought of this movie makes me uneasy because things in it (mostly the Skeksis) creeped me at such a young age.
I have loved this movie since I was a little girl.. I still love this movie today. The only part that really bothered me even when I was a kid was at the beginning when the original emperor his face falls apart when he dies. Apart from that I love the movie.
I remember being a kid and seeing this for the first time, it got me into wanting to see more fantasy stuff. Once I heard they were making age of resistance I was so happy I couldn't wait to see it, and I loved every second of it specially seeing how they chose to keep the puppets over making it a 3d animated show.
I only discovered this film three years ago, right before "Age of Resistance" was even announced, and fell in love with it and the world of Thra immediately. The story is pretty darn bleak (the Skeksis nearly killing the entire Gelfling population a century before, the trial by stone, Kira getting stabbed) and I've found some fascination regarding the logistics of what comes before and after it. ("Age of Resistance" ended on a triumphant military victory, but we all know that can't last. Not to mention just what are Jen and Kira supposed to do with themselves after restoring the Crystal and sending the urSkeks packing? The proposed "Power" sequel/comic has hundreds of Gelfling running amok ala "AoR," which would imply J&K, ahem, "boinking," which just seems weird to me; they're practically first cousins, for Aughra's sake!) In the abscence of any significant Thra-related news, I'll happily tune in to you for enough illumination to light the triple suns. I presume you're working off the 1978 "The Crystal" pitch brochure?
Jen is Stone in the Wood descent and Kira looks more Vapra or Grottan, i know that we can have fan theories regarding the romance between Rian and the lady gelflings in Age but there isn't really any canon to confirm familial relation between Jen and Kira, as for the graphic novels, where did the other gelflings come from during their reign?
There is zero indication that they're related, how do you get that they're "practically first cousins"? Inbreeding is still going to be a serious issue though. Most small populations consist of hundreds of people originally unrelated to one another, and the minimum population to avoid any inbreeding at all is 5,000, so... two people seems like there's gonna be a lot of inbreeding. At the very least, their kids are gonna have to have sex with each other. So unless there's other gelflings scattered here and there that they don't know about yet... yeah...
I remember the comic adaptation (which I still have somewhere) confused the hell out of me because it featured movie stills from cut scenes, like Jen’s conversation with urZah, and while the Skeksis speak in English in the comic, some of their own original language comes through, like shouts of “HAAKSKEEKAH”. Didn’t find out until the extras on the first DVD release about the actual cut content. Even the children’s storybook adaptation (which I no longer have) still referred to the Mystics by their original name, the urRu. Clearly that was changed VERY late in production.
I would love it if u reviewed Jim Hensons' The Storyteller. It's the best thing he ever did but no one seems to remember and the darkest thing based on Grimms Fairytales. I think you will love it. The acting, cast, script by Anthony Mingella and production values as just still amazing now. John Hurt as the Storyteller. Sean Bean/Paul Beateny/French and Saunders/Miranda RIchardson/Jane Horrocks/Joly Richardson/ BRendan Blethen/Bop Peck/Jonathan Price. And it's only on RUclips to buy in a low HD format. This needs to be 4k restorationed and HDR'd now.
Thank you for this very well-made feature! As someone used to editing (text, visuals, video, , music, movements) now I appreciate the final cut even more than before. Excellent visual work as well, thank you for the seamless integration of the archival footage etc. Yes & yes! 🙂
I remember being in Kindergarden back in 1982 (final year) and stumbeling across a report for this movie in a magazine. I was imedeatly enamored, but when I finaly got to see this movie about ten years later on TV, I loved it.
I had the book, and a poster in my room of the Dark Crystal, I was completely mesmerized watching this as a kid. This is a fascinating look at "what might have been". Maybe one day this will all end up in a future Blu-ray release. Ultimately, its an understatement to say Jim was an incredible & unique talent and his work will live on in those of us who were moved by its true Artistry. @@davidjames579 It's just that Sesame Street is cheery and happy-go-lucky. In contrast, The Dark Crystal is dark, mysterious, and gruesomely detailed. That's way different from Jim Henson's usual projects.
Henson did not create Sesame Street. The show was created by a collaboration of several writers/producers in the sixties. Henson was hired to provide the Muppet segments. His style did come through in at least some segments, especially the mostly entertainment parts, but he wasn't the primary creative force behind the show.
@Johanobesus Fatjohn thank you, I was just going to say that Joan Ganz Cooney and Jon Stone deserve the lion's share of credit for shaping Sesame Street, although it was a huge collaboration. Also, Jim was never a children's puppeteer, even in his early days. If you read his bio, he tried very hard not to be tarred with that brush. Sesame Street was such an important show though, coming right at the height of the civil rights movement, that he truly believed he and his team could make a difference. Same with creating Fraggle Rock years later.
It wasn't really darker, just less clear in a way that hurt the narrative. Good world building requires knowing when to show and when to tell. The working version just had too much of the former. It's ok for the audience to wonder why something is happening, it's not ok for them to wonder what is happening. I'm glad they found a good balance, because I love this film.
I've had a theory after learning the skesis spoke their own language at first and test audiences didn't like it so well. The Chamberlain is the only one to interact with the gelflings and originally spoke broken English since they had their own language. But when they had to be rerecorded they just left the Chamberlain as is leaving him with this strange speech pattern.
I grew up with the original movie and it definitely imprinted into my mind and still sparks a wonder about what this world is like. I would be so happy if the series got picked up again someday.

It was pretty ahead of its time.
The Dark Crystal is one of my most favorite movies. As always, Jim put his heart and soul into it. He had such mastery and vision of his films, and made you fall in love. I miss his movies so much. He was so unique and wonderful.❤ Kira and Jen are my granddaughters names.
I got to see it in the theater I think I was around 9 or 10 years old, it blew me away. Before the netflix show I've turned quite a few younger people on to it, I watched it couple years ago and it's still amazing, a masterpiece of creativity.

CGI may not be as good as practical effects, but to say it is cheap is an insult to FX artists. You may not be a GCI artist yourself but you cannot be this ignorant and say it is cheap, implying that it is easy and that anyone can do it.
Shame on you
@@redseagaming7832he would’ve eventually gone the digital route too. All these artists from this era were all very excited to expand their imagination through digital implementations.
I wouldn't say that they didn't care. They just knew there was nothing they could do so they moved on.

Not sure if this has been commented upon, as there’s a ton of comments. But I’m a film editor and have been around long enough to cut actual film on a flatbed editor. Dark Crystal went from a box office bomb, to now be regarded as a Fantasy Film Masterpiece, worthy of mention alongside other great fantasy works like Lord of the Rings.

One of my favourite childhood movies.
I was a kid when my mom took me to see this movie. Parents in the 80s thought this was a child friendly film... it was NOT... NOT for children under 12... To this day this film gives me uneasy shivers in my spine because I saw it when I about 7 years old.
Same here. I was 6. Nowadays, I'm so desensitized to scary movies and horror that pretty much nothing scares me, but just the thought of this movie makes me uneasy because things in it (mostly the Skeksis) creeped me at such a young age.
disagree, it's fine for most small children, it just has a couple of mildly scary bits. Mental bubblewrap is not healthy.
I have loved this movie since I was a little girl.. I still love this movie today. The only part that really bothered me even when I was a kid was at the beginning when the original emperor his face falls apart when he dies. Apart from that I love the movie.

Oh man, so many great shots and short scenes cut and lost forever
I presume you're working off the 1978 "The Crystal" pitch brochure?
how do you figure they are first cousins? Absolutely nothing in the story ever implies or eludes to that. Neither of them know their families.
So unless there's other gelflings scattered here and there that they don't know about yet... yeah...
@@Swindle1984 i choose to believe more gelflings appeared magically sort of like how augra was born. I mean, the crystal is fixed, so
I remember the comic adaptation (which I still have somewhere) confused the hell out of me because it featured movie stills from cut scenes, like Jen’s conversation with urZah, and while the Skeksis speak in English in the comic, some of their own original language comes through, like shouts of “HAAKSKEEKAH”. Didn’t find out until the extras on the first DVD release about the actual cut content. Even the children’s storybook adaptation (which I no longer have) still referred to the Mystics by their original name, the urRu. Clearly that was changed VERY late in production.

For some reason, when I watched the making of documentary, I thought that Brian Froud did the illustrations and Jim created a story around them.
I can still hardly believe that The Dark Crystal was written and directed by the same guy who created Sesame Street.
Everybody's got to start somewhere.

Awesome movie. Saw it too early, hid behind the couch when the skesis would appear on screen when I was little.
My sister was and still is terrified of the Sketsis! If she gives me grief I just have to do the chamberlain’s whine and she freaks out 😂
I really enjoyed this move! I remember seeing it with my mom at my local small town theater.
I find it so fascinating that The Dark Crystal Workprint leaked online!
He bought back the rights for his own him for $15 million, mad respect!
I grew up with the original movie and it definitely imprinted into my mind and still sparks a wonder about what this world is like. I would be so happy if the series got picked up again someday.
I remember seeing this movie in the theater and I really liked it. I remember A lot of people I know that’s saw it not feeling the same way .they hated it., my dad and mom took my little brother and sister to see it. My mom said my father kept falling asleep. And my little brother and sister couldn’t follow the movie in fact when I try to explain it to them they didn’t want to hear it .they hated it.
I was lucky enough to go to a Brian Froud exhibition in the 90's, lots of stuff from this film and Labyrinth and his books.
My brother did a screenplay for a sequel to this back in the early 2000s, but back then, they didn't look at anyone who wasn't a professional screenwriter.
So now it's essentially fan fiction. I believe I have one of the only remaining hard copies of it. He called it the Crystal of Truth.
His other work is locked in an iMac since he passed in 2019 at nearly 47, taking his password(s) & codes with him.
This was the first movie I remembering watching- I was probably 3ish at the time and now at 20. This world still lives in my heart and mind
I pray every day that Criterion gets to release this movie and have even more bonus stuff. I just love this film and want more people to.
I'm in my upper 50s and still love that movie! It came out on video disc (not DVD for you young people) and my wife and I watched it regularly.
This had a big impact on me as a child. It's so striking yoy remember it forever
The world building in the dark crystal universe is incredible
