    The rest of the Skeksis are sucking down crystal light every day just to stay alive, but my man SkekMal is in better shape than all of them combined just from eating well and getting exercise

      remobothic they’re hedonists. As much as they fear death, they just can’t help themselves from indulging and feasting and ultimately letting their bodies go to ruin. It’s only his sadism that kept him in shape. Had he enjoyed something that required him to be less physically active he’d be as screwed as the others

      And this is over 800-900 years after the skeksis first appeared on thra so yea he’s definitely in better shape than the rest of his kin for the age they all are.

  • @GuukanKitsune
    @GuukanKitsune 5 лет назад +834

    SkekMal is unique among his brethren. Where most of the Skeksis spent nearly a millenium lounging in luxury and feasting in their castle, he did not. He spent those centuries in the wilds, seeking out ever more powerful and dangerous creatures and killing them. Daily testing his strength, and maintaining his vitality. He only came to the castle when summoned, and then only stayed long enough to find out what prey they wanted hunted. Thus while the others withered, skekMal grew ever stronger. Even the egotism of skekSo the Emperor gives way to admit that among them, skekMal is the mightiest of them all. He is the only Skeksis that, even at such an age, remains in the prime of strength and health that he had when he was first rent from his Urskek form.
    So now you should imagine... How terrible and mighty the Skeksis once were, in their earliest days.
    It's a terrifying thought.

      @GDeNofa 5 лет назад +67

      GuukanKitsune if all the other Skeksis lived the way SkekMal did, they wouldn’t be withering away, trying to cheat death. SkeMal was death. Such a badass!

    • @bobkob
      @bobkob 5 лет назад +51

      It’s possible since I didn’t see SkekMal use the crystal or even Gelfling essence to revive Himself that the Skeksis could’ve just adapted to the more primitive lifestyle and the abuse of the crystal and Gelfling peoples wouldve not have been necessary to live long, its possible that SkekMal simply adapted to Thra rather than drain it, becoming an “ Apex Predator” instead of parasitic or complete invasive like the other Skeksis.

    • @GuukanKitsune
      @GuukanKitsune 5 лет назад +43

      @@bobkob Right on the nose exactly. If the Skeksis were capable of restraint and balance they wouldn't have needed the Crystal or essence to survive.
      The fact of skekGra the Heretic and urGoh the Wanderer surviving just fine by living the same balanced lifestyle together proves you correct. It's even noteworthy that skekGra seems much healthier and more spry than even skekMal.
      The Skeksis were functionally killing themselves via hedonism, and, since all the wisdom and patience went to the uRu, they were almost incapable of realizing it. They only lived as long as they did because they stole life from other things and we're otherwise kept alive by the healthy lives of their uRu counterparts.

      Agree! this is a passion project like Blade Runner 2049 and made by a talented filmmaker who is a fan of the original movie and Louis Laterrier did well on the first 2 transporter films, Incredible Hulk and Now you See Me and he grew up with Dark Crystal as it with Star Wars trilogy, Jaws and more inspired him to be a filmmaker and he did a great directorial job with this show just like Denise Villanue was to Blade Runner 2049 as that was a great sequel.
      There's passion in TDC AOR and BR 2049 and i can see that as both succeeded where passionless stuff like Ghostbusters 2016 aka Ballbusters (The director was not a fan of Ghostbusters property and did it only for a paycheck and had no passion in the project) and some film attempts to bring retro franchises failed

I don’t want to knock the original too hard, because they accomplished a LOT given the technological limitations of the day (and the fact that it was a lot of people’s first big movie project). I'm also sad he won't get to brutalize more Gelflings if a second season happens, but he had me panicking when he got a hold of Rian on the last episode of this season. @@thedudeabides2531 actually, according to the final episode, each Skeksis is very strong, much stronger then the Gelflings. Save the scientist. So each one can take on several gelflings and win, which is why the Gelflings were worried about their lack of numbers. Even in the movie, you see the Chamberlain dragging Kira into the throne room and you can see her barely get any leverage on him. Meanwhile he looks barely like he is putting effort to drag her to the others.
      And while Skekmal was the strongest, at one point they were all about as strong as him.
      The next best fighter among them was meant to be Skeksa, the rogue. She was a pirate in her prime. skeksis is the only Skeksis to identify as female, the rest identify as male, though in truth there is no such thing as true gender among their race.

Everything from the way he walked, the way he spoke, his collecting, and how he followed his own path while being obedient to higher ups reminds me of all the things that made Grievous an amazing character in the side stories of Star Wars and was never brought to its fullest in the Prequels.

    I think its interesting that the most alive skeksis are the ones that live outside the castle. Sure, the heretic is about the same as the rest, but he hasnt interacted with the crystal in a long time. Hunter is the apex predator. And another canon skeksis is skeksa, a mariner, wasn't closely linked to the castle.
    All three of these characters had little links to the castles, and two of them were the pristine examples of their species and were alive for centuries. Sure, hunter and skeksa could be explained away with them paying visits to the castle for immortality, but i feel that would miss a big thematic bit. That it wasn't the lack of juice that was killing them, but their dependency on crystal to begin with. That if they just listened to Mother aughra and the mystics for 5 minutes, and actually just interracted with the world rather than try to control it, they could have lived however they wanted. Instead, they followed their pride and embraced hedonism (Hell, heretic would probably be in tip-top shape if his counterpart wasn't keeping them baked 24/7). They didn't even necessarily have to reunite to live to the fullest. Just give aughra the crystal and live in the world. All of this could have been avoided, but they couldn't gain any self control

There's no hidding nor running from him, he is faster than you, he is stronger than you, and he is willing to do -anything- to get what he wants. This scene legitimately made me cry. The all-maudra's death was also sad, but seeing rian and his dad finally acting as father and son in the show, only for his dad to die was just awful.
    I wasn't crying until Ordon saw his son was clearly distressed, stopped panicking, took a deep breath and said "it's alright, it's alright. Be brave." Like holy shit. I usually never cry watching deaths of parents in movies and shows, this was actually the first time I've cried when the parent of a main character dies.

      I cried as well because Ordon was a favorite of mine and I cried with Brea when she saw her mother killed in front of her and she blamed herself! I laughed when Naia blamed Gurjin and he it not my fault everything’s terrible and I also laughed when Rian called him Bold Gurjin!! I felt Rian’s disappointment when Tolin was picked to lead the Guards when it should have been him and his father calling him a child instead of an actual adult because he was goofing off instead of on patrol like he was supposed to! It’s crazy how the puppeteers did their job so well that you forget that the character is an actual person instead of just a puppet!!!

    The Hunter really nails down why everyone on Thra is so damn afraid of the Skeksis. Seeing one in his prime makes you realize how terrifying they would be to fight. Love the scene.

    And now we can be free to imagine how utterly horrifying the rest of the Skeksis would be if they had all followed SkekMal's lead.

    Hard to believe this shares history with Sesame Street and The Muppets.

    Not gonna lie, this has made me forget all about that other show that came out earlier this year and had a terrible final season. I forgot it’s name.

    This Hunter is one of the best designs ever! Unlike the rest he never sits about eating and dressing up fancy clothing but goes out hunting and face his enemies dead on and use an extra pair of arms for combat!

      What about the Heretic?(I thought he was a cool Skeksis since he is able to live side-by-side with his other half.) I love them both but.... I love the Heretic more....
