SkekMal was the only one who wasn't technically a puppet. Only the head and back arms were mechanically controlled, but there was a person inside that thing.

I can't bring myself to hate Skekmal. I can't. Despite being a murderer, he was my most favorite out of them all alongside the Archer, Deet and Mother Aughra. I think it's his lack of corruption like the other skeksis and his bewildering activity to bounty hunt. He's not really on anyone's side, he hunts and fights for the thrill of it Also, the way Rians father tells him it's okay and to be brave as he is consumed by gobbles hits hard 💀💀😭 (2:36) i get the same pain from when Superman's adopting father told him not to save him from the tornado 💀💀💀😭
Compared to the other members of his kind, he is likable. At least with him what you see is what you get. He is a killer and hunter, and knows it and admits it. The others pretend they are so superior and are decent individuals who just want to survive.
SkekMal is my absolute favorite Skeksis so far. He is so different from the others and just plain badass. Even the other Skeksis acknowledged he was the strongest of them all. (spoilers) I'm also sad he won't get to brutalize more Gelflings if a second season happens, but he had me panicking when he got a hold of Rian on the last episode of this season. Knowing what happens to all Gelflings in the end, I legit thought Rian was gonna get his skull crushed before skekMal bit the dust.

Can I just say that this is the most badass skeksie That I've ever seen. Like when he was in that pit with Ordon he didn't even care that he was about to die as long as he took someone with him.
I'm going to be honest, my first thought when seeing SkekMal was General Grievous. Everything from the way he walked, the way he spoke, his collecting, and how he followed his own path while being obedient to higher ups reminds me of all the things that made Grievous an amazing character in the side stories of Star Wars and was never brought to its fullest in the Prequels. I absolutely love how this character was constructed and felt like a threat and unlike anything of the past. This is what I would've loved Grievous to be, but I'm totally fine with settling with SkekMal for his amazing performance.
This scene still gives me chills and I love it every time I see just pure epic ness and shows how far a parent is willing to go to keep their child safe
between this and the final battle of the season, makes really realise how much of the CGI in the Star Wars prequels was unnecessary and could have been done better with puppets and practical effects.
Well... he was the one who staid fit. Rushing through all manner of jungle, swamp, or desert like a Mad Lad, killing pretty much any- and everything he could find... with nothing but swords & knives... for centuries. This while the rest of their kind turned into withering throne potatoes. Doing nothing but boozing and binge eating, 24/7. But yeah, when he first came in, swinging through the trees... that was definitely a major 'oh SHIT!' moment. 😳 Especially considering that a lot of this is still puppetry.
This is one of my favorite scenes in the series. The cinematography, the music, the emotions of the characters...and SkekMal is a fucking badass and a refreshing threat to the cast.
The good news for Rian is that skekMal is probably the toughest single opponent among the Skeksis that he will ever have to fight. The Hunter's luxury-loving counterparts haven't spent their lives navigating treacherous ground or outmaneuvering dangerous game.
SkekMal and General Grievous are very similar: Both have a terrifying, awesome skull-like mask, both have four arms, and both are ruthless, efficient killers and fearsome opponents.
I think its interesting that the most alive skeksis are the ones that live outside the castle. Sure, the heretic is about the same as the rest, but he hasnt interacted with the crystal in a long time. Hunter is the apex predator. And another canon skeksis is skeksa, a mariner, wasn't closely linked to the castle. All three of these characters had little links to the castles, and two of them were the pristine examples of their species and were alive for centuries. Sure, hunter and skeksa could be explained away with them paying visits to the castle for immortality, but i feel that would miss a big thematic bit. That it wasn't the lack of juice that was killing them, but their dependency on crystal to begin with. That if they just listened to Mother aughra and the mystics for 5 minutes, and actually just interracted with the world rather than try to control it, they could have lived however they wanted. Instead, they followed their pride and embraced hedonism (Hell, heretic would probably be in tip-top shape if his counterpart wasn't keeping them baked 24/7). They didn't even necessarily have to reunite to live to the fullest. Just give aughra the crystal and live in the world. All of this could have been avoided, but they couldn't gain any self control
SkekMal terrified my niece when I was watching this with her. She had the same look of trauma I had when I watched the original film. They legit did a great job making The Hunter fuckin SCARY.
This fight goes along way to sell the idea that in their youth, just 16 Skeksis were able to seize control of most of Thra. They are large, physically overwhelmingly powerful, intelligent, fast and deceptive.
Imagine how terrifying the skeksis would be if they were all in shape like skekmal. Which i'm guessing they were in their youth, hence why the gelfling practically saw them as demi gods before the rebellion.
When the skeksis first appeared one of them went into a fit of rage and killed 2-3 others that’s why there are only 15 left, the skeksis did it because it was so repulsed at what it had become and couldn’t bare to see its reflection in the faces of the others, I think skekmal was the skeksis that killed the 2-3 others and made a mask out of one of their skulls
If you're talking about the part where he's jumping around in the trees, that was definitely cgi. That wouldn't be possible with puppeteer work and practical effects.
Skekmal's appearence turned the entire show upside down in the good way. Skekmal shew what terrifying force the Skeksis could truely posses. Skekmal was a one man army, more agile and strong than anyone in the show, just the scenes of him climbing around on all fours was scary in its own. There's no hidding nor running from him, he is faster than you, he is stronger than you, and he is willing to do -anything- to get what he wants. Skekmal was a true force to be reconed with, an enemy that you cannot negotiate with or talk with, he is there for one thing, and one thing only, The Hunt.
This scene legitimately made me cry. The all-maudra's death was also sad, but seeing rian and his dad finally acting as father and son in the show, only for his dad to die was just awful. I wasn't crying until Ordon saw his son was clearly distressed, stopped panicking, took a deep breath and said "it's alright, it's alright. Be brave." Like holy shit. I usually never cry watching deaths of parents in movies and shows, this was actually the first time I've cried when the parent of a main character dies.
I cried as well because Ordon was a favorite of mine and I cried with Brea when she saw her mother killed in front of her and she blamed herself! I laughed when Naia blamed Gurjin and he it not my fault everything’s terrible and I also laughed when Rian called him Bold Gurjin!! I felt Rian’s disappointment when Tolin was picked to lead the Guards when it should have been him and his father calling him a child instead of an actual adult because he was goofing off instead of on patrol like he was supposed to! It’s crazy how the puppeteers did their job so well that you forget that the character is an actual person instead of just a puppet!!!
The Hunter really nails down why everyone on Thra is so damn afraid of the Skeksis. Seeing one in his prime makes you realize how terrifying they would be to fight. Love the scene.
This Hunter is one of the best designs ever! Unlike the rest he never sits about eating and dressing up fancy clothing but goes out hunting and face his enemies dead on and use an extra pair of arms for combat!
What about the Heretic?(I thought he was a cool Skeksis since he is able to live side-by-side with his other half.) I love them both but.... I love the Heretic more....
The rest of the Skeksis are sucking down crystal light every day just to stay alive, but my man SkekMal is in better shape than all of them combined just from eating well and getting exercise

I second that
Big Facts
The Hunter, The Emperor, The Chamberlain, The Scientist... all so very delightfully devilish
Also looking forward to seeing this show's version of SkekUng, the Garthim Master
skekMal is probably the most primally _terrifying_ Skeksis to ever have lived.
Titus Monk Skesil is like star scream or littlefinger. He plays friends with everyone, strikes only when needed, and his most powerful weapon is his silver tongue. Skekmal is more direct yet equally cunning and dangerous in a different way.
Stinger Johnny essentially SkekMal is the Six Shot of Dark Crystal, always looking for the perfect challenge.
@@DdraigGoch84 Especially in the movie when he meets Rian and Kira. All throughout the movie, the Skeksis are just waddling about and then all the sudden Chamberlain comes out of nowhere gliding!
@@stingerjohnny9951 depends on the starscreem.
OG: every five seconds he tries (and fails) to take Megs spot so no one is surprised, silly but VERY entertaining
Bayformers: Literally loyal to the core, IDK what happened here but this guy will not betray his master wtf
Animated: MUCH closer, until he was found out and kicked off the team
Prime: About as close to Skesil as possible, also hilarious, "bring medical kit"
WFC FOC: more of a vizier and time-biding opportunist, plays by the rules until the meg is out, then turns everyone other than soundwave against the former ruler, for about five minutes.
waspscream: technically the OG starscreem, after much time and dimension hopping gets into an alt-dimension waspinator and gives him a transmetal body, defeats maximals and captures BW megatron, goes back to cybertron just to fight him again with preds in veicon bodies, wins and becomes 1 of 4 rulers of cybertron (also doubles as the only happy ending for any waspinator ever).
I kid you not the last one IS canon.
Mason Jones oh I remember beast wars, I grew up with it. Waspinator was a fan favorite after the show felt like turning the universe against him XD
What makes him so captivating is how much he loooovvveesss what he does. His drive, his passion, pure sadistic bloodlust, and centuries of honing his skills. Could kick any of the Skeksi's asses including the emperor if he so chose
And that’s why the others are at least scared of him. They know he is dangerous and the only thing keeping him from taking over is his hatred of that sort of power.
Skekmal is that villain who would rather be free to hunt anything than to be shackled in the castle with authority.
Jim Henson would be proud of this series if he were alive today in seeing how people respect and honor his legacy.
I agree it did justice

@@valianthorizon6890
There has been many failed attempts to recapture retro film classics like Ghostbusters, Elm Street, Robocop, Alien (last good one was Aliens) and so on and failed miserably.
Only Blade Runner 2049 and this show are the only ones that did recapture the spirit of their films and were passion projects done with actual care and all

It makes me happy that the Dark Crystal is finally getting the proper respect it deserves. The 1982 movie's such an underrated classic that was ahead of its time and misunderstood.

It was strange for the time it came out but grew a massive cult following the more people came to appreciate the work and creativity behind it.
What's it supposed to mean?
Is it me, or does SkekMal lowkey look like General Grievous?
The only real similarities are the skull and the four arms, and all Skeksis do have four arms. They just keep them folded against their back unless they're skekMal.

@@ulfberht4431 the Predator has that plasma gun on his shoulder and has the technological advantage. So I have to go with the Predator.

And this fight was done with puppets? Wow! Really, masterful work!
He's like Predator as a skeksis eh?
SkekMal was the only one who wasn't technically a puppet. Only the head and back arms were mechanically controlled, but there was a person inside that thing.

but in 2003 clone wars he was a chad among chads the true apex predator he was always meant to be
I can't bring myself to hate Skekmal. I can't. Despite being a murderer, he was my most favorite out of them all alongside the Archer, Deet and Mother Aughra. I think it's his lack of corruption like the other skeksis and his bewildering activity to bounty hunt. He's not really on anyone's side, he hunts and fights for the thrill of it
Also, the way Rians father tells him it's okay and to be brave as he is consumed by gobbles hits hard 💀💀😭 (2:36) i get the same pain from when Superman's adopting father told him not to save him from the tornado 💀💀💀😭

I'm also sad he won't get to brutalize more Gelflings if a second season happens, but he had me panicking when he got a hold of Rian on the last episode of this season. Knowing what happens to all Gelflings in the end, I legit thought Rian was gonna get his skull crushed before skekMal bit the dust.
Most bad ass thing put to screen in many years. One hell of a villain. Even Dutch would be like "We ain't gonna make it to the choppa!" seen this dude come swinging in through the trees.
How does one skeksis remain this nimble, while the rest act like old people. Maybe they'd feel better of they all didnt just sit around all day. Seriously this was awsome, SkekMal outperforms all the other skeksis in just 3 and a half minutes of film
Purple dragon 19 agreed. He was beyond bad ass. I wish he stayed alive for the next season. 😣

There's some CG in the series, but about 80% is puppetry. That stuff where SkekMal is jumping through the trees is a CG Skeksis. Also, the long shots of the Gobbler pit is puppetry except for the gobbler mouths on the edge of the pit. (and any close-ups of the mouths).
Purple dragon 19 I know but wished he stayed on for the next season at least. He probably would have taken on Lore without hesitation.
Me: I can't imagine how these guys managed to wipe out anything they move slowly fight sloppily and can't fly despite being giant vultures.
Skekmal: hold my trophy
Yeah, Skekmal was literally the only legit warrior in the series. The rest of the Skeksis pretty much rely on armies they manipulate or create.
@@thedudeabides2531 actually, according to the final episode, each Skeksis is very strong, much stronger then the Gelflings. Save the scientist. So each one can take on several gelflings and win, which is why the Gelflings were worried about their lack of numbers. Even in the movie, you see the Chamberlain dragging Kira into the throne room and you can see her barely get any leverage on him. Meanwhile he looks barely like he is putting effort to drag her to the others.
And while Skekmal was the strongest, at one point they were all about as strong as him.
The next best fighter among them was meant to be Skeksa, the rogue. She was a pirate in her prime. skeksis is the only Skeksis to identify as female, the rest identify as male, though in truth there is no such thing as true gender among their race.

It's quite clear that they had to cut corners with the puppetry, but the emotional stakes and the situation is what sold this scene!
Daniel Ramsey I think the corners were cut so they could do the full body puppets
It is very obvious that some parts were cgi but just like the puppets and setting, they put in the money and effort into it and it shows

The first season was amazing. I really hope this show gets more attention. The hunter SkeMal is so cool.
Skekmal is the best skeksis for sure! Despite being so close to death all the time he powers through better than the others! I doubt any would be of the others would best him in outright combat.
When Skekmal first shown with all four arms in use my first thought was “General Kenobi I was trained in your Jedi arts by Count Dooku”
“You fools, I was trained in your ways of combat by your Maudra Fara!”
I like this new version of General Grievous very much.

the hunter is so cool...I just love the way he moves
1:15 - I freaked the hell out when I first saw that. SkekMal was a force of nature. o_O
The gobbler bed really fills me with revulsion; an undulating cluster of bobbly things that gnaw you to death. A horrible way to go.
A sarlac pit you might say
They were pretty weird looking life forms and I think I would rather go by gobble pit instead of the sarlac pit because it would be a faster death
between this and the final battle of the season, makes really realise how much of the CGI in the Star Wars prequels was unnecessary and could have been done better with puppets and practical effects.
SW with puppets would be weird, like Yoda makes sense, but not other characters
They didn't have the best puppets for the Prequels, just look at Yoda's in The Phantom Menace. Going CG for Star Wars was right in my opinion.
There is still CGi in this though.
@@AngelEmfrbl Not as much as the prequels.

Jesus the light makes it look skekmal has silver eye sockets with a mirror surface
Who else was kind of disturbed to see a Skeksis move like that?
Well... he was the one who staid fit.
Especially considering that a lot of this is still puppetry.
I was rather impressed, actually. Felt like he was something out of Predator
This is one of my favorite scenes in the series. The cinematography, the music, the emotions of the characters...and SkekMal is a fucking badass and a refreshing threat to the cast.
He's quite like Predator eh?
A mix between the predator, general grievous, a bird, and a fucking dinosaur...
The good news for Rian is that skekMal is probably the toughest single opponent among the Skeksis that he will ever have to fight. The Hunter's luxury-loving counterparts haven't spent their lives navigating treacherous ground or outmaneuvering dangerous game.
...I think SkekMal shall be my nightmare fuel after finishing this season, even after he's gone. 😨😨😨😨😨😨
That moment he lifted his two arms holding swords... and then out come another pair of arms with swords... was totally floored by that :D
Not too mention that bad ass line
"Father...And SON!"
SkekMal and General Grievous are very similar: Both have a terrifying, awesome skull-like mask, both have four arms, and both are ruthless, efficient killers and fearsome opponents.
They went full ROTJ by having the father save his son by sacrificing himself. It can't get any better!
Yup this has a SW trilogy feel this series does
Or ROTS with a four armed sword wielding trophy collector fight
Not. My. SON!!!!!!
"You have heart, I'll take that too!"
I don't know why that sounds so bad ass
Cuz it's respectful, even admiring, but also unshakably confident that he's going to kill you
The sequence of SkekMal running through the treetops, before this shot, was amazingly well choreographed. I loved it.
0:20 Even the gobbles are afraid of Skekmal...
SkekMal terrified my niece when I was watching this with her. She had the same look of trauma I had when I watched the original film. They legit did a great job making The Hunter fuckin SCARY.

I like the part where the blood-thirsty blueberries cowered in fear when SkekMal arrived.
Imagine how terrifying the skeksis would be if they were all in shape like skekmal. Which i'm guessing they were in their youth, hence why the gelfling practically saw them as demi gods before the rebellion.
SkekMal: "You fools! I have been trained in your gelfling arts, by Count Dooku!"
I wonder, what on Thra did he kill to make that mask?

A bit but considering they up and dust away when they die, It can’t be.
just keep breathing during the great division in the confusion they started fighting. It’s very possible he killed a skeksi
it would have a beak if it was a skeksis skull. And skeksis crumble to dust when they die.

This is dark, epic and sad at the same time
Ordon: jumps in
Ordon: hello there
Skekmal: general Ordon
The first time I say a dark crystal scene and I already feel like crying :(
Skekmal's appearence turned the entire show upside down in the good way.
Isn't it satisfying to hear the voices of Merlin and Eggsy as father and son?
1:16 your essence will make a fine addition to my collection

Dam the hunter is like a badass combination of the predator and general grievous
I can see that
The Hunter really nails down why everyone on Thra is so damn afraid of the Skeksis. Seeing one in his prime makes you realize how terrifying they would be to fight. Love the scene.
And now we can be free to imagine how utterly horrifying the rest of the Skeksis would be if they had all followed SkekMal's lead.
Hard to believe this shares history with Sesame Street and The Muppets.
