This kit is going to be an amazing starter kit for someone. I'm expecting my first child and I'd love to get into woodworking as an activity to share with him. Wanna teach him the value of hard work and doing your best.
I purchased a set up Narex chisels, b/c I didn't want to wait the month or so that these were calling for on Amazon. However, you're guiding us in the right direction...thank you!
Hi Cody- thanks to your videos on chisels, I was able to correctly sharpen my grandfather's chisels! I greatly appreciate the time and effort you put into the content in order to provide everyone with valuable information, and I also greatly appreciate your videography skills- your variety of shot selections and editing skills do not go unnoticed!
Making a nice wooden box to hold the stone would be a great project as you could use the chisels to mortise out the lid and the base to securely fit the stone
I'm so glad you are giving your honest opinions on each of these "budget tools." I have been slowly starting my tool kit and these are the tools I've been trying to pick out! THANK YOU!!
is the combination square the same things as the speed square or is it a totally different tool? i work in framing construction so i use a "speed square" everyday but iv heard the term combo square. idk if they are the same thing :P young guy here trying to learn
They sure can. I've never seen one that was dead on. Check the blade on a cheap combination square too. Some are really sad. The markings were off and the edge not straight. Still might be good enough for non critical work.
I just want to say thank you for doing videos like this, for alot of folks its just not feisable to buy tools to try out and then find out its not up to the job and now you dont have the money to replace it with something else, so thank you and may God bless you and your family!!!
Out of all the money I have wasted on sharpening stones, my favorite is a stone I found in my backyard. I don't know how, but nature made two perfectly flat sides. It sharpens so beautifully too.
I work as a heavy equipment operator but didn't grow up in a hands on working mans household so I'm learning everyday thanks to what I learn at work and from guys like you! So thank you for the detail and care you put in your videos
Thank you for the instructional video. I always put the chisel the wrong way when I started off. Thank you for the explanation. I will start using my chisels the correct way and now I know how to sharpen them as well.
or you go to a leather supply store and find a random offcut. You can get a small piece pretty damn cheap and cut it to the size of wood you want. I got random piece to make holsters for knives and guns and used the leftovers for strops.
Hey nowhereusa... you are giving me ideas. mmm.... wonder if my husband would mind if I started cutting up that leather hide folded up in our closet. I sure could use some holsters for knives. My husband is retired and doing nothing but eating, watching TV and playing cards. I think I'll put a bug in his ear to see if he has any interest in doing something like that. Thanks again nowhereusa!
Susie Q it's pretty easy to do some. if you do a gun or knife wet the leather and wet form it around the item. make sure your wrap it to make it water proof(or you'll have a very unhappy husband). I used press and seal worked pretty well. form it, leave it to dry with the item in place and then sew it up.
Art F. I'm also interested in finding the Ticonderogas. I currently use a Ticonderoga standard #2 in the shop, never considered that they might make carpenter's pencils too
Go to Amazon.com and search for Ticonderoga carpenters pencils. They will pop up. The best deal they have is $8.30 for six with free shipping. Seems kind of high but these things last a very long time and yes they are much better than most lead pencils. Most modern lead pencils are pure crap. I'll pay the difference any day.
Some Guy good point! I saw one guy polishing his car lights with toothpaste. We use the equivalent of a P4000 sandpaper diamond paste in the laboratory to achieve a mirror grade surface in steel samples, buf it's like 40 bucks for 15mL, so that's not worth it for sharpening.
Autosol works good. I have never tried stropping with toothpaste but i think Autosol or chromium oxide is cheaper. But, if you're in a pinch toothpaste would probably work.
Very valuable instructions for proper chiseling! I've done a lot of hinge mortising on my job sites as a handyman, and they rarely turn out as well as I would like. My next ones will be better for sure.
I am getting ready to move to Macau China and was trying to figure out what tools I want to take with me. Your toolkit videos have helped me think this through. I can afford what you have shown so far. I learned that the mallet does not have to be so big. I have seen the Irwin chisels. Nice to know they are of such good quality and have a history behind them. Thank you.
Appreciating all the tutorials you're giving with each tool in the kit you're building. I also really appreciate the love and attention you give to each little aspect of a tool. Thank you for sharing Cody!
Every since I found this channel I love watching it and it has has an inspirational life with it and I would love to have a tool set that inspired myself to owning one so god bless you and your family for a job well done I’m going to get on your store and go over everything I can read and look at what I can buy that I can add to my shop thank you wrangler star I enjoy watching everyday thanks again.
Thanks for sharing the new chisel's you picked out. I don't think I would have ever given them a chance based on previous things I have bought from them in the past and was not impressed. For the price I think I might give them a try.
dear mr&mrs wranglerstar, first off, i love all of your vids and they have helped me a lot with loads of things the last 1.5/2 years. i have gotten more into axes, thanks to you i know how to sharpen them better and keep them good. and i started doing a lot of stuff in my own shed, like make a new wood place, restore my old shed and make it into a woodshop/allround shop all thanks to you! the only problem is i dont have much good tools, i have a couple decent saws and some basic stuff but no good chisels, planes, stuff like that. i am a 18 year old dude from the netherlands and i have learned so much from.your vids. and i would love to have such luck to win this toolbox! it would really complete my woodshop. thanks again for all the great vids and how much you have helped with not only the things i already said, but also with getting through some rough times in my life. im really greatfull for that. cheers, Wesley Krol
I love those Irwin chisels! they really think about there uses and don't cut corners where it counts... I really need a good layout knife... can't wait to see your pick! thanks for the video!
Great info! I have a basic chisel set, and I need to go back and properly prepare them. I was one of those unfortunates who assumed a thing would be ready to use when I bought it...not so much. I picked up a $30 Kobalt bench plane at Lowes, and need to get the glass/sandpaper together for a proper tune up. It seems like the components are decent...we'll see. As always, thanks for the great content.
I did not realize how important a hard wood mallet is for wood chisels. And I am impressed with the candor of his comparison with his expensive chisels. I am very interested in the sharpening stone. I have bought the round one for axes and hatchets, but this one is very tempting. Good, informative video. God Bless
This is sure going to be quite a nice set of tools. Can't believe one of us lucky folks will be able to own all of them! Love what you're doing and can't wait to see what new tools are to come. Keep up the wonderful work!
That set of chisels looks great! I’m gonna have to give them a try! THANKS and God Bless! The mallet will be a FUN bonus! I have a bunch of mallets, but I made each one. The only other “store-bought” mallets I have are a couple of rolled raw-hide mallets that I picked up when I was really into leather working! I also LOVE the rawhide mallets for chisel work, but I’m looking forward to trying a hardwood mallet! Thanks, Brother!
I'm excited to give these chisels a shot. I'm new to woodworking and I found the idea of acquiring tools daunting. This series is giving me the confidence to start small with high-value pieces and go from there as my needs change.
Thanks again for a fun video. I find myself doing exactly what you do when you talk about new tools; I almost talk myself out of my own purchase when I compare tools to mine.
I'm learning tons watching your channel wranglerstar. Living here in Norway (though I'm from Scotland) most of your videos are pretty relivent for me. Keep up the great work and channel
Again, thanks Cody. I think I covet the official Wranglerstar pencil above all so far. Chisels look awesome, excited to see it all come together and hope this heads my way........
Good for the price. They'll work well, but may need sharpening a bit more often than more expensive chisels. I've just bought an Irwin block plane for under £20.00 and once the base was flattened and the blade sharpened properly, it worked a treat.
Cody, These chisels really impressed me. The design looks like it took some serious time and attention to detail to develop. I really want to win to tool box the more I see these products. Thanks for sharing as always, Brad
good comparison of the higher end chisels vs the irwins. I grew up not far from the Norton stone factory in Worcester, MA and we have lots of these stones around. Great quality old school stones! Keep up the great work!
Hi Cody. Great review of the Irwin chisels. My wife gifted me the set of Stanley Sweethearts for our anniversary a few years ago and I love them. I've not considered Irwin before. I don't need the chisel set from the video, I just wanted to give my appreciation for the work you do. I also noticed a few videos back that you're finally using a pusher when you do cuts on your table saw. I like to think my nagging is what drove you to that great idea. Take care.
New to the channel. But I'm loving it. I also use Amazon a lot! I also been buying my own tools. I've done concrete for 11years. So we do a lot of wood form work. Some times needing chisels.
I'll be looking at the Irwin Chisels the next tome I need a new chisel.I really need to make up a stropping station for all the knives and tools I sharpen, great idea Cody!Gabby
Nice Chisel set! I recently purchased the Stanley Fat MAX Set at a "big box" store . I chose them as them were made in England and they are full tang as well I liked them formed hand grip for detail work. I saw the Irwin/ Maples but they were a set of 3 vs 4 in the Stanley set. I didn't notice that the Irwin Chisels were that much thicker. I might should have waited to watch your video. The Stanley are nice & were a bit less expensive than the Irwin which were without the mallet in the store. Thanks Again
This is going to be a great tool box. I just ordered my chisels and they are coming in the mail tomorrow. Very excited to learn something new. Thanks for sharing
Makes me want to go and purchase the stone and chisels right now! Will wait until this series is finished and make one purchase for all items that will be in this kit. Loving every minute of these videos so far. Keep up the great work.
I miss all the woodworking you were doing right after you made the Paul Sellers bench. It's nice to hear you'll be making a toolbox soon. I can't wait to see it
I was considering some chisels from a big box store that are nowhere near this quality but for not all that much less money. Glad I didn't pull the trigger yet. Thanks!
This is fun seeing what things I might need for an entry level wood working kit. I appreciate the know-how and realism you bring to the idea. Thanks Wranglerstar!
Don't worry about taking up my time stropping. I really appreciate the dedication you put into your content and would watch endlessly if I could. There is so much to learn from the videos you put out. Thank you. Could you put some of the stropping equipment in your Amazon store? The rouges would be helpful. Thanks!
i like it that you not only try out all the tools you choose, but always give instructions on sharpening and maintenance as well. something that is really getting lost today is information on how to maintain a tool or any product you buy.
So far so good Wranglerstar!!! I've purchased chisels from Harbor Freight, but I would love to have this set. So far, I have the saw and chisels from HF. Would be interesting to see how these stackup to HF tools. Hopefully I win!!!!!
1:19 "well thats not 50, but uh" actually that was exactly 50. Good muscle memeory.
This kit is going to be an amazing starter kit for someone. I'm expecting my first child and I'd love to get into woodworking as an activity to share with him. Wanna teach him the value of hard work and doing your best.

My favorite you tube channel. Thank you Wranglerstar for not only picking out great tools but showing us how to sharpen them and how to use them.
I've been a bit dismissive of Irwin tools in the past. Might be time to give them another look...
Help! Help! I can't stop re-watching Wranglestar videos!
We should start a support group. WVAA. Wranglerstar Video Addicts Anonymous.
LOL
I'm so glad you are giving your honest opinions on each of these "budget tools." I have been slowly starting my tool kit and these are the tools I've been trying to pick out! THANK YOU!!
The chisels look really nice. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the combination square.
Ryan Soderholm I agree. Combo square info is something I'm interested in. Which one Cody thinks is accurate.
is the combination square the same things as the speed square or is it a totally different tool? i work in framing construction so i use a "speed square" everyday but iv heard the term combo square. idk if they are the same thing :P young guy here trying to learn
BrigadeFuhrer94 the combination square has the adjustable ruler in it and is in two pieces where your speed square is just a triangle.
cheap combination squares can be a bit off. If price is important, maybe just get a fixed square. (And test it before you buy it)
They sure can. I've never seen one that was dead on. Check the blade on a cheap combination square too. Some are really sad. The markings were off and the edge not straight. Still might be good enough for non critical work.
38 mm "don't know what that means " clasic
Try a wee bit over 1 1/2''
I just want to say thank you for doing videos like this, for alot of folks its just not feisable to buy tools to try out and then find out its not up to the job and now you dont have the money to replace it with something else, so thank you and may God bless you and your family!!!

Keep the great material coming! I sure would love this kit! I know I don't have a channel but my son does:
I know what you mean about the kit. Looks like a fine entry level tool kit!
I've been picking up old belts and harnesses at auctions for years, they have unlimited re-uses
Thank you for the instructional video. I always put the chisel the wrong way when I started off. Thank you for the explanation. I will start using my chisels the correct way and now I know how to sharpen them as well.
I like the idea of a old belt for a strop.

I find a thinner piece of leather works better than the thicker type...gives less. Good place to get some is a shoe repair or upholstery shop.
Old belt or some old boot leather. Hit up your local thrift store and find something that no-one else wants and tear it apart.
Great info and that's really neat that they include such a good mallet.
Great content!
God bless
“Speaks for it-self”. Better words were never spoken. Thanks for your videos, I’ve learned a lot and can’t wait to learn more!
Nice video WS.
How does someone know what show to go to so we can get a pencil?
Keep up the good work.

Could you use tooth paste as compound?
Some Guy good point! I saw one guy polishing his car lights with toothpaste. We use the equivalent of a P4000 sandpaper diamond paste in the laboratory to achieve a mirror grade surface in steel samples, buf it's like 40 bucks for 15mL, so that's not worth it for sharpening.
Autosol works good. I have never tried stropping with toothpaste but i think Autosol or chromium oxide is cheaper. But, if you're in a pinch toothpaste would probably work.
Xabier GG tooth paste works great for getting rid of 'milkyness' on older head lights.
Bi carb and white vinegar mix works best.
Good to know! I'll have to try that, as soon as it warms up. ;)
Yeah in a pinch I prefer Wenol it comes it two different grits. www.amazon.com/Wenol-Polish-Shiner-Surface-Protection/dp/B00JAL1BIU
Very valuable instructions for proper chiseling! I've done a lot of hinge mortising on my job sites as a handyman, and they rarely turn out as well as I would like. My next ones will be better for sure.
38mm is 38 milimeters. The superior, widly used around the world, metric system
REEEE dirty brits
and everyone else but the USA and a couple of other countries.***
Michael Stoneham - He knows what it is lol. He makes fun of the metric system in a lot of his videos.
I am getting ready to move to Macau China and was trying to figure out what tools I want to take with me. Your toolkit videos have helped me think this through. Thanks again for making these chisel videos. Very helpful. I'm going to go through the process with mine, and see if I can bring them back to life.
Appreciating all the tutorials you're giving with each tool in the kit you're building. I also really appreciate the love and attention you give to each little aspect of a tool. Thank you for sharing Cody!

Excellent audio and video with no distractions such as music in the background. Down to earth honest comparisons and opinions.

Good info - thanks for taking the time.
Sharpening stone!!!! Nothing is forgotten when we got Mr. Wranglerstar on the job :)
excellent tutorial on sharpening the chisel. Thanks!

Another great video showing a great introductory woodworking tool. Might be something I pick up in the future. Bought Ryoba saw. Can't wait to use it.

Very Nice! you answered my question from the first vid, I'm impressed. I own the Stanley set of cheapos and theses blow them out of the water!
good comparison of the higher end chisels vs the irwins.
I like this set as well. As a novice, I like your input.
Once again, thanks for testing!
Starting to really want this tool kit! Everything looks great.
New to the channel. But I'm loving it. I also use Amazon a lot! I also been buying my own tools. I've done concrete for 11years. So we do a lot of wood form work. Some times needing chisels.
Thank you for the sharpening tips as well!
I would agree, those are the only sizes you need to get started. Glad to see they sharpened up nicely.
i found this exact same set in a shop here in australia and bought it right away based on your word. hope they serve me well.
I'll be looking at the Irwin Chisels the next tome I need a new chisel.I really need to make up a stropping station for all the knives and tools I sharpen, great idea Cody!Gabby
Great looking chisels. Looks like a must have. Thanks
Awesome looking chisels, I'd love to have this kit
Nice Chisel set! I recently purchased the Stanley Fat MAX Set at a "big box" store . I chose them as them were made in England and they are full tang as well I liked them formed hand grip for detail work. I saw the Irwin/ Maples but they were a set of 3 vs 4 in the Stanley set. This is going to be a great tool box. I just ordered my chisels and they are coming in the mail tomorrow. Very excited to learn something new. Thanks for sharing
I bought the entire line of these and polished them to mirrors and love them. Amazing set alongside my restored 750 set.
Makes me want to go and purchase the stone and chisels right now! Will wait until this series is finished and make one purchase for all items that will be in this kit. Loving every minute of these videos so far. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for your great review
I will be making this, thanks!
Yep, definitely ordering these
Very nice chisel kit...and the mallet is a bonus. Thanks for what you do for us. Take care
Thanks for links to the tools.
these methods are so easy and cheap, thanks
Thanks for the detailed sharpening videos, I always learn a new trick.
I like them. Glad you are doing economical tools
Great review. Thank you for what you do?
its nice to see that there are companies out there still making good tools
Hey Wrangler, would love to add these tools to my collection! as a beginner these would help so much. Appreciate all the tips!
I like that it comes with a mallet. The mallet I've been using is a rawhide mallet from my leather tooling kit.
Thank you for this review. Great review of affordable chisels
Thanks for the information. I enjoy watching your videos.
I miss all the woodworking you were doing right after you made the Paul Sellers bench. It's nice to hear you'll be making a toolbox soon. I can't wait to see it
another good lesson. I find your lesson informative as I am someone who is interested working with wood. your knowledge is appreciated.
Thanks for the heads up on the pencils.
These look great! thanks for the review!
I was considering some chisels from a big box store that are nowhere near this quality but for not all that much less money. Glad I didn't pull the trigger yet. Thanks!
Thanks for the chance!!!
Your videos are so educational, thanks.
Thanks for another informative video! I've been searching for a good starter set of chisels.
Nice choice!
Thanks!
Im nee to wood working so seeing a technique for sharpening tools has been very helpful.
Addicted to this series. Just starting out in woodworking.
Great review, thanks!
I have the reproduction 750s and they are great. Came with a decent tool roll as well!
i like it that you not only try out all the tools you choose, but always give instructions on sharpening and maintenance as well. something that is really getting lost today is information on how to maintain a tool or any product you buy.
Thanks for the helpful tips and in-depth reviews.
Thanks. this was helpful
So far so good Wranglerstar!!! I've purchased chisels from Harbor Freight, but I would love to have this set. So far, I have the saw and chisels from HF. Would be interesting to see how these stackup to HF tools. Hopefully I win!!!!!
Wish i have one of those...
Thanks for the tips.
